$5 iPhone stand fits in your wallet

iPhone stands come in all shapes and sizes, from $40 luxury models to no-cost hacks you cobble together yourself.

Personally, I want something that goes where I go, that always rides shotgun, that I won't accidentally forget to bring along.

Something like the GoGoStand, which has the credit-card dimensions necessary to fit in a wallet but unfolds to form a solid, adjustable stand for the iPhone or iPod Touch. (It can work with other devices, too, natch.)

As you can see in the video, the GoGoStand is just a specially cut piece of plastic. But the design is quite clever, allowing three different viewing angles depending on which tab-hole you use.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a developer charging $10 or even $15 for a product like this, but the GoGoStand is priced very reasonably at $4.99, shipping included. (Alas, it's currently "sold out until next week." Check back then!)

Of course, this isn't too different from the Crabble stand I wrote about a while back, except that the latter now costs $6.99 (plus $1.50 for shipping) and still has a terrible name.

Until now I've been using the $9.95 Tiko Fold, which is a great travel stand in its own right, but a bit too large to fit in a wallet.

I have to say, the GoGoStand is exactly what I need, and the price is hard to beat.

Agree? Disagree? What do you use to prop up your iPhone/iPod Touch when it's movie time? If you have a favorite DIY solution, be sure to include a link with your comment!

I like this one http://www.gadgetspage.com/pda-phone/binder-clip-iphone-stand.html it uses 2 binder clips and is really simple! But the one you posted looks nice because it would be easy to travel with :)

Nice one Jon34511. I'll try that one. There are lots of paperclip stands on Youtube. Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmgTKDrheYs&feature=related Unfortunately, I like the $40 one Rick mentioned in previous articles!

The stack of money you'd save by not having an iphone would make a great iphone stand. Would also help buying more stuff...

I'm guessing cnet/atlas picks up some or all of Rick's monthly bill since I can't see how any true cheapskate would buy what is basically a glorified toy.
by rickbroida September 18, 2009 7:25 AM PDT
Wait, just to clarify, you're calling the iPhone a glorified toy? Seriously? I agree that the monthly tab is insane, but it's not much more than you pay for any other smartphone on any other carrier.

As for CNET picking up any/all of my bill, uh, no, not in this reality. I pay for the iPhone out of my own pocket, in part because it's a justifiable business expense (I write about it, after all), and in part because it's worth it. It's the single best piece of technology I've ever owned. And it's precisely because I'm cheap about other things I buy that I can manage to afford it.

Remember, just because you dislike a product doesn't mean everyone does.

I agree wholeheartedly with Rick on this one.

Rick, I'm saying all smartphones are glorified toys. Granted, there are a few who actually need such phones' capabilities while "on the go", but the majority can definitely wait until they get back to their computer to use those functions and mostly get them for their coolness factor. I've played with the iPhone and do not have any disdain for it. However, the level of monetary commitment it demands, IMO, does not mesh well with the overall theme of your blog.

OnanSalad/Renojoe - I think of the iPhone as my mobile phone, camera, calculator, video recorder, world watch, tape/voice recorder, hard drive, PDA/calendar, GPS unit, Weather channel, note pad, mobile cable TV (Slingbox), iPod, email gadget, internet browser, mobile computer, compass, book reader, travel device (night clock, currency calculator, etc), shopping device, and gaming device.

All those features would take a dufflebag worth of gadgets to carry. All in one, for one price.

@renojoe: Not to drag this out like a Joe Wilson apology, but I didn't say "buy an iPhone." I said, "here's a $5 iPhone stand." Also, this was originally posted at iPhone Atlas, and merely cross-posted to Cheapskate, so it was actually fitting in with the theme of the former. :)

To defend this blog remember these are tech oriented deals. Most tech are luxury items not necessarily needed to maintain life ( although indoor plumbing is nice :) ). If you want to take the cheapskate to whole new level wait 5 years and by that tech product you would have bought today. There will be a significant price difference ( a whole lot cheaper at the garage sale) . What I am trying to say is we pay a premium to use the latest tech and Rick is just trying to help people cut the cost and have the latest tech too.

PB: Although you make a good point, my Sony Walkman phone does most of those tasks for about half of your iPhone's monthly bill. Do you really use the other capabilities with enough frequency to justify your increased costs?

RB: Since we're in agreement on the theme issue, maybe the cross-posting with Atlas isn't a good idea. Just a thought.

Renojoe - True dat - if one isn't using a lot of the features of the iPhone, it is a VERY costly device or "toy." But if one utilizes the device, it may be priceless.
by OnanSalad September 18, 2009 8:42 AM PDT
I like iphones - if my company paid the tab I would definitely have one - but they are a toy. It's essentially just an ipod touch with a phone - but don't studies show that most iphone users actually use a second phone for calls? I have a Touch competitor - and while I had big plans to use it as my primay pc while travelling - it never quite happened. It's just an expensive ebook reader. Granted - it's better at ebooks than the iphone or touch - but did I need to pay the extra $$ for a webcam, wireless, etc to read books? Having said that, as an ebook reader I probably use that handheld for more hours a day than any other device other than my laptop.

At a certain point of usage, I guess a luxury can become a critical part of your lifestyle. This isn't the case for everyone though. My boss has an iphone, but the only time I've seen him use it is when he's showing other people his iphone.

Studies show that iPhone users use a 2nd phone for calls??!? ROFLOL Umm... I don't think so. Maybe blackberry users.

Rick - keep the iPhone deals coming. I enjoy the cross posts.

Why not use a paperclip? You can just bend it in a way to hold the phone.

I'm glad I read this post. That is a simple and neat little gadget. I'm definitely buying one for my fantastic iPhone. Where is this peace of simple tech made? IF it's made in America I might just buy five, contribute to the economy.
I have a very nice car but it's not a Mercedes. I could manage with a cheaper less able phone, then buy a cheap zen for music, wait until I can get in front of some cheap pc box to quench my online news and social surfing thirst.
Naa, I love my iphone and my Macs. No Mercedes, we have to pick our luxuries like we pick or battles.

P.S. You Apple bashers need to relax. Get some apple in your life. lol.

We made a product called the MobileRiser at newpcgadgets.com. This is a thin stainless steel bracket that attaches to the bottom of the iPhone or iPod to stand it up at a 75 degree angle. When not in use it closes to less than a 1/6" inch thick.

My favorite iPhone iPod stand is called the Comfort Base from newpcgadgets. It is desktop stand that lets you plug in your charger and has a earphone holder in the back. The black acrylic base is stylish.
