Major, minor iPhone 3.1 upgrade problems and how to fix them

A number of iPhone Atlas readers, and numerous more on Apple's Discussion boards, have reported a bevy of problems--some large, some small--after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1. The following two procedures work to solve a number of the reported problems:

  • Reset your iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
  • Restore your iPhone: In iTunes, click the Restore button under the Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos, and other data on the phone, but will restore automatically backed-up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc. Of course, make sure that you back up your phone before restoring.

However, some issues--chronicled below--persist:

Podcasts are listed in random order for some users who are reporting that podcast episodes are not being displayed properly by date. We encountered this problem in one out of seven podcasts on a test iPhone 3GS. This bug has been confirmed by Apple, so look for a fix in a future firmware update.

Random freezes or shutdowns are a major complaint for users after upgrading. The problem is the source of heated discussions within a huge Apple discussion thread containing nearly 900 posts. The problem seems to manifest itself whenever the iPhone goes to sleep, the user locks the display, or just randomly. When the user next tries to use the phone, he or she will find it completely unresponsive--the display remains blank and pressing buttons won't wake it. The only recourse for the user is to perform a reset as described above.

Battery life is another major complaint for users after upgrading and one we've encountered ourselves. So far, none of the usual fixes have resolved a problem some are claiming happens even when the iPhone is idle. Regardless, we've noticed on our own iPhone 3GS that battery life is significantly poorer after upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1. It isn't unusual to commute home at the end of the day with 25 percent or less battery life.

Apple is clearly aware of the battery problem and is actively trying to resolve it by engaging iPhone users in a study. Participating users will receive a special BatteryLifeLogging.mobilecongfig file that will capture Powerlog files from the iPhone when syncing with iTunes. The user sends the log files to Apple via e-mail or http://bugreport.apple.com. Hopefully with enough input, Apple will find the root cause of this problem and issue a fix in a future firmware update.

In the meantime, we suggest that you look at our guide to getting the most out of your iPhone battery for suggestions on improving battery life.

Slow or sluggish performance is a complaint from some users, blaming the problem on MobileMe syncing. According to a post by Skid on the Apple forums, you can resolve the issue by performing these steps:

1. Launch the Settings App
2. Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars
3. Go to your MobileMe account
4. Turn off contacts and calendars
5. When prompted, delete them from your iPhone
6. Reset your iPhone by holding down the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
7. Perform steps 1-5, but this time turn contacts and calendar syncing on.

If the above steps do not resolve the problem, another alternative is to delete your MobileMe account from your iPhone, perform a reset, and set up your MobileMe account from scratch.

Unknown error (-50) was an error we encountered when syncing from iPhoto to our iPhone 3GS on another computer. According to Apple, all we needed to do was sync using iTunes 9, which we had not installed on the second computer. After upgrading to iTunes 9 the problem disappeared.

A problem with Exchange is a source of complaints about the OS 3.1 upgrade manifested by 2G and 3G iPhone models failing to connect to Exchange 2007. Details about the issue can be found in the article, "Apple explains iPhone OS 3.1 Exchange changes."

Bricked iPhones caused by the OS 3.1 upgrade failing to apply was a source of complaints by some unhappy iPhone users. Fortunately, there is a fix for most "bricking" incidents: take the following steps to do a factory restore of your iPhone:

1. Press and hold Sleep/Wake and Home until the iPhone resets.
2. When the Apple logo appears release Sleep/Wake, but do not release Home until you see the prompt to connect the iPhone to iTunes.
3. Connect your iPhone to its USB sync cable.
4. iTunes should launch. If it doesn't, launch it manually.
5. Perform a restore of your iPhone's firmware, settings, apps, and media.

A handful of other common problems were reported with the OS 3.1 update for Wi-fi, the compass, and other small items. We've covered many of these in the posts "Major, minor iPhone upgrade problems and how to fix them," and the follow up post "More major, minor iPhone upgrade problems and how to fix them."

If the above fixes don't help with your OS 3.1 issue, consider following the Apple iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant before investing your time in calling AppleCare or visiting the local Genius Bar.

Tell us about your iPhone OS 3.1 upgrade problems in the comments.

Got a replacement 3G with ver 3.1 on it a little over a week ago (previous 3G with 3.0 worked great other than a bluetooth issue), since then the phone will stop working randomly - "bars" are shown but phone will not ring and/or be able to make phone calls out. Fix is to restore the phone, but then it fails again after some period of time usually over 1 hour. Just got the phone replaced with a recommendation to replace the SIM card also. Genius bar guys do not seem to acknowledge this is a widespread problem yet.

I have the exact same situation since I upgraded 9/18. I am losing connectivity several times a day. Have to do a hard boot. Just did that now 4 times to get service back.
by keithinator September 24, 2009 1:18 PM PDT
I have this very same problem. It has occurred ever since I updated to 3.1. The phone function will basically freeze up. No changes in bars, no functioning phone or modem. The only way to restore the phone capability, is to reboot. Then it seems to work for a while, then freeze up again.

How do I restore 3.0? My phone is non-functional with 3.1.

I have this exact same problem also. Jeez, you would think that they would quality check something like this before sending it out to the masses.
by tizzdogg September 30, 2009 12:49 PM PDT
im having the exact same issue as well. it's really very frustrating.
by doctorzach September 30, 2009 7:32 PM PDT
Me too. Same exact issues. Got replacement 3G (had to go thru 3 lame refurbished phones before they found an acceptable replacement). Took it home and did a fresh update, full restore. Same problem reoccurs randomly, not associated with any App use I can track. Best I can figure is that it has some relation to entering/leaving known wifi zones. Only fix is to reset. They need to address this problem as it makes the phone completely unreliable for work purposes.

I'm experiencing the very same failure mode. The first symptom I noticed was a text message that failed when I tried to send it. After verifying the number I was trying to send it to, I did a reboot, which allowed me to successfully send it. Later that day, my girlfriend asked me why I didn't answer the phone (she walked in the house, noticed the phone right next to me and had just tried to call). There was no missed calls logged (she'd tried twice). She called again while I held the phone and it didn't ring. I did another reboot (2nd of the day), which resolved the problem. I never had a problem with the phone after installing 3.1. Things didn't get flaky until after the firmware was updated on the 26th. I guess I'm headed to the Apple support site to log a trouble ticket.

I have the same problem on my 3g 16GB. The phone and sim card have been replaced per the apple store. This did not correct the problem. Apple recommended turning off 3g. I do not loose my ability to make and recieve calls when I do this, but it make the phone even slower. It does not help on my wifes 3gs.
by brookenp October 3, 2009 7:01 PM PDT
I've had similar issues too. Full signal (supposedly) but don't receive calls or voicemails. Can't connect to e-mail or the internet. Frequent errors in sending text messages. Dropped calls, never an iPhone/AT&T strong suit are now constant. Many of my friends have had similar problems but the person who I spoke with at Apple (who was very nice, though she couldn't solve my issues) said this was the first time they had heard of the issues I was reporting. I don't trust my phone anymore and have had to tell people that I may not be reachable. I now hard reset my phone at least twice a day to make sure I didn't miss anything. Battery life is horrendous. I now have to control usage to make sure I can get to the end of the day. When are they coming out with an update to OS 3.1!?
by ADent01 October 3, 2009 11:59 PM PDT
I have the same problem. The cell radio stops working, but still get full signal indicator. Everything looks OK until you try to make a call that will never connect or visit a website that will never load.

Today it happened while using Safari - I had turned off WiFi shortly before due to marginal signal.

When it happens and I do a shutdown I get the spinning white wheel like it is shutting down, but then it the initial screen comes up - with Searching in the signal area. If I do another shutdown now, it will turn off.

Very annoying - missed two important messages (and who knows how many calls) tonight. At least the 3rd time this cell freeze occurred this week.

I upgraded to 3.1, found battery time noticeably reduced, even while in standby mode. This is a new 3Gs, 32gb, no 3rd party apps.

If Apple continues to rush OS upgrades without full QC testing, more people are going to hate their iPhones and eventually become known as just another crappy phone.

I upgraded to the 3.1 and had the freezing issues, I called apple support and whoever I talked to was very friendly and made me an appointment to have mine replaced at an apple store in Ann Arbor, I walk in and was basically told that I don't know what I'm talking about, there's nothing wrong with the 3.1 update and he gives me a new phone, on my reciept, it says that I was given a new phone because "that's what the phone support said to do". Anyways, so I have this new 8gig 3g that wasn't updated to 3.1, I go home and update it and all that great stuff to 3.1 and now my battery life is the lamest it's ever been, I can barely use it for a full day without having to charge it, before I could leave it unplugged for almost two days.. needless to say, I'm probably using my 90 day warranty and taking it back... so irritating.

I found a more effective solution: when prompted "Would you like to update to iPhone OS 3.1?" I checked "Never remind me again" and clicked the "Cancel" button. So far this has worked like a charm.

LMAO great solution...I also did this since I was happily jailbroken on 3.0 but then I eventually gave in and clicked update because I began to miss the overall speed that I lose due to jailbreaking but its back now and my iPhone 3G is noticeably faster. Now I just can't wait till Friday for MMS!!!
by aasrithreddy September 23, 2009 1:43 PM PDT
ROFL This is the best solution I have seen so far
by mrbritesid3 September 21, 2009 12:05 PM PDT
the only problem i encountered with my iphone after the 3.1 upgrade is that all my smart playlists aren't so smart anymore. none of the songs match my correct playlists on iTunes. no, they're not NOT in order. songs that shouldn't be in the playlists are in the playlists. i know my music like the back of my hands. but i'm sure this will be fixed with the next firmware upgrade along with mms. no worries. :)

I have the same issue. A temporary (until Apple fixes it) fix is to uncheck "Live Updating" when you right click on the smart playlist and go to "Edit".

i purchased an IPhone 3GS a couple of weeks ago with the 3.0.1 OS. the phone worked great. phone quality, internet. i updated to the 3.1 OS a couple of days after the firmware was released and my phone has went downhill since. i lose service more often than i can make a successful call. when trying to place a call, it disconnects saying call failed. my internet access is slow. my battery life has dropped. i went to sleep with a fully charged phone and woke up one morning with my battery at half strength. i don't have push enabled on any of my applications.

Last night I ran the upgrade. It produced an error which completely disabled my phone. The phone now displays a graphic of a USB cable coming up from the bottom of the phone with an arrow pointing up to an iTunes logo. I tried connecting it to several different computers (at the suggestion of Apple), but they all come up with an error saying "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes. When I try to restore the phone, it just fails and takes me back to the same place I started. I took the phone to the local AT&T store and they said, "Oh yeah, we've seen several of these since last Friday. You'll have to call Apple, because the problem is with their software." So I called Apple, and the tech sounded like he knew nothing of this problem. He sent me to Article: HT1925, which suggests I uninstall"all traces of" iTunes, QuickTime, and other essential software components from my Windows XP PC. I really don't have time to devote an entire day to this problem. I just want my phone to come on!

Update: It's working now. Nothing I tried on any of my Windows XP machines would revive my phone. Finally, I decided to try synching to a Mac. That worked, but the phone lost everything. I then synched it to my Windows machine (where all my music is), and now I'm pretty much back to normal. What a waste of my time!

I had the same issue today 9/25. Tried updating iTunes to latest version, restarting the iphone, etc. and nothing worked. I think unpluged the usb cord and plugged into another usb slot on my pc and it worked fine.

I just wanted to add that I own a 3GS that has the 3.1 software on it and I have not once experienced any of these problems. Luck of the draw?

Same here - I have two brand new 3GS's...they shipped with 3.0.1 - but was immediately upgraded to 3.1...All functions work fine...I did have the "brick issue" but I did a rest on the phone while still conencted to iTunes and then the upgrade to 3.1 was successful. These battery issues remind me of when the 3G came out...and the phone had an issue with switching back and forth between EDGE and 3G all day...thusly causing the battery to drain whilst constantly switchign networks and searching for the stronger one. Myself, and some other posts I see on Apple's forum and other blogs indidcate that when the phone is on WIFI, say at home, the battery lasts for days, yet when they leave the house or go off WIFI, and transition to 3G, the battery ends up dying before the end of the workday. Could this possibly be another case of 3.1 including a tweak of network settings? The update does specify that WiFI was tweaked and battery issues were also tweaked - leading me to believe the cellular network chips were flashed to some new setting. But hey....thats my 2 cents....

No problems here either but the people that are having problems shouldn't be. The phone and the service aren't cheap and customers will go elsewhere if this sort of thing continues.

No problems with an upgrade to 3.1 on a 3g, sorry others are having them.
by trey2trey2007 September 21, 2009 1:38 PM PDT
just bought this supposedly (God-Phone LOL) and it does what it wants. Battery life is worst than the terrible t-mobile wing i had. Cuts off whenever it likes. Need to charge it every 5 hrs. not to mention it took 2hrs to activate when i went to the apple store, and they blamed at&t. I'm pissed

Fully charge the phone and then let it go totally dead at least once and I mean totally dead as in turns off since its past 0% and then fully charge it again and it should at least fix the very short battery life.

I haven't experienced any real issues, but everything seems to run on the slow side. Especially launching apps.

I guess, ironically, the 3.1 update appears to have fixed all of the problems I was having with my 3GS that people are saying are caused by 3.1. After I had the new phone for about a week, my battery would just drain non-stop, I would usually have to recharge by lunchtime and again in the evening. The phone also felt warm, so I knew something was running, but resetting and restoring did nothing to fix it. Also, my calendar was no longer syncing with Google. However, upon loading up 3.1, my phone has been great, battery easily lasts a full day or more with regular use and my calendar and contacts are properly syncing with Google. I don't get it, but I'll be interested to see what Apple's research into the battery problem finds...if they make it public, anyway.

My wife's phone appeared to be bricked... It would automatically go into recovery mode, and error out.

I tried everything listed here... I deleted the update from the iTunes directory... plugged the phone in... it re-downloaded the update... and it worked. Just an option.

Since dowloading the 3.1 update, my phone will randomly shut off and I have to keep resetting it to get it to turn on again. Any web search makes it clear that there are major bugs with the update. So why did I just receive a marketing email from Apple touting the "great features" of the 3.1 software update?!

We have 3 iphones in our family all work great on 3.1. The only the thing that bothers me when using the ipod I now have multiple album covers for the same album. I called Apple and they said they were aware of the problem and are working on a update.

I never saw a smooth update for the iphone, not even the hardware updates (3G,3GS) worked properly since the launch. That's the reason why I choose an android platform! The updates really work, and they do improve the phone!

How about the GPS problems that have been plaguing iPhones since the 3.0 upgrade. Basically the GPS stops work and you can only get Cell trangulation fixes.
There are numerous threads about it on the Apple Support pages the most notable of which is over 24 pages long.

I've experience the problem since the 3.0 release. One day spent an afternoon trying all the fixes I could find on the net and I eventually got it to work again for about 3 hours then it went back to it's non functioning state.

I had the freeze/shutdown/battery life problem myself. Turned out to be associated with WiFi for me. Once I turned off WiFi, my battery has gone back to being good for many days in standby. Something is causing it to drain much faster than usual with WiFi on in this update...

I have a 3G model ,16 GB.

Since I upgrade my 3G to 3.1 I have experienced an unknown error that prevents me from syncing my phone with iTunes. I contacted Apple and was told my phone was out of warranty and referred to an Apple store for consultation with a "Genius Bar Specialist." The consultation consisted of the 12 year old employee telling me he didn't know what was wrong and emailing me an article to "assist" in helping me solve my problem. Prior to upgrading to 3.1 I had no issues with my phone. I am still experiencing syncing issues and have notice battery issues other are also seeing. I can't make it through the day without plugging my phone in.

Apple is all about selling their products but support is another matter. I long for a days when I had a Blackberry that could actually last 2 or 3 days between charges.

I also am experiencing battery life issues, but I haven't seen anyone mention anything about voicemail. I regularly delete my voicemail and keep some messages but for 2 weeks people tell me that they can't leave a message and that the voicemail box is full. I called ATT last week and they reset my voicemail, that didn't work, I called again last night and after about 15 minutes of the rep making changes to my voicemail and given instructions to shut off the phone for at least a minute, I still had the same problem. It turns out that deleting voicemail on the phone through virtual voicemail did not delete the messages. I had to go into my voicemail by dialing a number they gave me and deleting them the old fashion way. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've had the same problem, however my visual voicemail doesn't work at all. Whenever I get a call I have to wait then access my mailbox the old way. Also I can have a full signal and can't receive or make phone calls until I reset it.
