It's not very glamorous, but this battery pack delivers iPhone power on the cheap.

The older your iPhone gets, the worse its battery performs. Don't blame Apple: it's just the nature of rechargeable batteries that they wear out over time.

Sadly, you can't just swap in a new one--not without some warranty-voiding surgery. But you can plug in external power, which is cheap, easy, and affordable.

For example, Meritline has an 1800mAh iPhone backup battery for $9.99 shipped. That's after applying coupon code MLC262531102717A (which expires Oct. 29) at checkout.

The standard iPhone 3G battery has an 1150mAh capacity, meaning this plug-in pack should afford at least 50 percent more runtime all by itself. You can use it for emergency power if your battery's on empty or to recharge your iPhone on the go.

And, hey, 10 bucks? Grab a couple. Throw one in the glove box, another in your coat pocket, etc. That way you'll always have backup power when you need it.

This battery pack is compatible with all iPhone and iPod Touch models. Keep in mind that because it ships from Hong Kong, it could take a couple weeks to reach your mailbox.

This is a good deal, great battery power for the money. However, I would blame Apple for not allowing you to swap batteries without warranty-voiding surgery. Other phone manufacturers make this possible. The Palm Pre allows it. The Palm Pixi, an even thinner device than the iPhone, will allow a user to swap the battery as well.

This is a less bulky solution than having to carry a portable battery charger.

You can usually pick one of these up on eBay for that price. FWIW, I got one of these exact models and it was very poor. A light jiggle would cause it to lose connection and, over the span of a few uses, it ended up losing all connection ability. It's to the point where I can get it to connect for a second, the. It disconnects. I jiggle a bit and, again, brief connection.

I ended up going back to eBay and picking up another one (the model with the lightup blue arrow pointing upward). It came last week and so far, so good. It has a much better connection.

Of course YMMV.

One more comment ---- DID THE AUTHOR / "REVIEWER" EVEN BOTHER TO TRY TO USE THE THING IN REAL LIFE?

I usually think CNET has better reporting. TKD27 is right on target.

Nice deal but a little buyer beware is called for. This offer was posted earlier this year; I ordered two. They are "mailed" from HK with no tracking and mine never arrived. Meritline posted a credit for me, no problem but I would have rather had the goods.

Same for me. I ordered the last time this was posted, and still have not received the two I ordered. I still haven't gotten a credit either.

That is very strange. I had the same experience. I bought two and they never arrived, but the meritline people were very responsive and refunded my money.

So because Apple doesn`t provide a replaceable battery , you are supposed to walk around with this huge tumor sticking out from the phone ? Bwahahahaha !

Does the battery prohibit use of headphones when it is attached. That is, does it physically block the headphone jack adjacent to where the battery plugs in to the iphone/touch?

No, it plugs into the bottom and the headphone jack is top right on the Iphone. Not sure about the touch though

1. The connection to the phone is weak. It's easily disconnected and you cannot realistically use the phone while it's connected.
2. When the phone reaches a full charge, it says the device is not compatible.
3. It places all the mechanical stress on the connector. Not good for repeated use.

I purchased 5 of them. 2 were DOA.

Don't waste your money.

I bought mine from Monoprice for ~8.70 before shipping. I'm sure you could find some extra cables you need for cheap too though

Warranty-voiding surgery aint so bad. I've bought new batteries for old iPod models off sites I've never bought from and opened up old iPods with no special iPod opening tool kit and replaced batteries for new ones with no problem, no scratches whatsoever. If I were to have an iPhone and the internal battery would be real bad, I'd buy one and open 'er up and replace it. That simple.

When this was posted last time, I tried to order, but they were out. I did eventually however get one. These are the worst kind of cheap Chinese knock-offs of something that should work. To make is worse, I actually disassembled mine cause it seemed unable to fully charge my iPhone 3G. Turns out it only had like a 800mAh battery !!!!, not the 1800 or 1900 it was suppose to have. I complained to Mertitline and did get a refund, but they apparently may still be pushing these off. Now these may actually have the properly sized battery, but unless you want to potentially throw away $10, don't bother.
