World's ugliest iPhone case gets artsy

Perhaps you remember Case-mate's 99-cent cardboard iPhone "recession" case, which we wrote about back in September and deemed one of the better product publicity stunts in recent memory. Well, Case-mate is now hosting a decorate-your-recession-case contest with users submitting photos of their creations. The pic with the most votes wins a Suzuki moped from the '80s.

We gotta say, the entries are pretty amusing, and while cardboard is never going to look upscale, the decorated cases are pretty hot in a sort of avant garde way.

Check out the slideshow below and feel free to let us know your favorite. We'll add more photos as entries come in (thanks to Case-mate for allowing us to post them here).

Note: The contest ends at 11:59:59 p.m. ET on November 30, 2009. To enter, visit recessioncase.case-mate.com.

Hunkered down in New York City, Executive Editor David Carnoy covers the gamut of gadgets and writes his Fully Equipped column, which carries the tag line "The electronics you lust for." He's also the author of "Knife Music," a novel. E-mail David. Follow David on Twitter.

Ummmm, none of the above... If I had an iphone, and got the recession case, I'd coat it with a thin base of white glue and lay on a creatively-arranged multi-colored design made out of sequins or 'sparkles'. I think it's cute that people have been letting their 4-year-olds loose with crayons on their recession cases, but I wouldn't go so far as calling them 'sexy'.

you are a monster.

but people have mentioned your missing sense of humor, we'll let it slide.

CNET please award 'Bling' or 'Robot Love' the moped!

Wow.. I looked through about 15 cases before giving up. There is nothing sexy here, only 1 or 2 creative designs. Mostly they are all incredibly dumb.

As a writer, place "IPhone" anywhere in your headline and it will get published...

1. why do so many kindergarteners have iPhones?

2. calling yourself "anti-Obama" (or anti anyone for that matter) just proves how ignorant you are. Then again...in a nation populated by morons, I guess you're still above average. Dumb is dumb though...you can't polish a turd.

1. So do you have the same opinion of the legions of anti-Bush folks?

2. You're obviously not a Mythbusters fan. Polishing a turd...Myth Confirmed!

LOL @ one of the Anti-Obama recession cases; there was a sticker on it saying " I was anti-Obama before it was cool"...
Yes, it seems like we're in a society where hating Obama (but not knowing squat about politics, let alone spelling the word "politcs") is cool.

Dissent and opposition to Dear Leader and Nancy Pelosi's desire to control every aspect of our lives is downright unacceptable!

anti-obama equals hope for the world? Wow, some people love bringing politics into everything.
by jaguar717 November 9, 2009 10:47 PM PST
Many of us would rather leave politics OUT of everything, but you can't just walk away like when you disagree with your neighbor.

Nancy Pelosi and Bawney Fwank bring politics into everything by trying to grab control of every aspect of our lives.
Some of us would still like to just be left alone to earn an honest living, not dependent on government and having our decisions made for us.

What a LAME leader in the contest, it's hilarious how people think they're jo-smart about politics, but all they really do is sit and watch Fox News.

I was going to enter this contest, as I think I'm a pretty good artist and that I could possibly have a winning design. Then I went to the Recession-Case contest website and saw that the Anti-Obama case is number one, with a more than 2,000 vote lead on the next runner up. Why bother entering?

It's unfortunate that this contest can't be about having fun and about art. It's got to be about politics. People are voting because they hate Obama, not because they love the case-- and that's not what this contest was originally about. I would feel the same way if it were a Pro-Obama case in the lead. Enough is enough. I'd rather vote for the "all black" or the "kindergartener constructed" cases.

There were a few pretty artfully crafted cases on the site. Kudos to those people who took the time to make a cool case. You guys are the winners of the contest in my book.

wow that was terribly awkward, the sluggish page loads didn't help. it literally took me almost half an hour to get through them all and get back here (a bad link 1/2way through didn't help either).

some interesting ones, and also some terrible ones.
so why was the World Peace one an invalid entry? I didn't exactly see anything wrong with it. nothing like a generic error message!

cnet really needs to work on their slideshow interface stuff, it's awful.
