You can still break even on iPhone 3GS upgrade

Your mileage may vary, but you should be able to sell your iPhone 3G for the same price as a refurbished 3GS.

So it has come to this: My iPhone 3G is a year old and out of warranty. Its battery ain't what it used to be. And, heavens, does it seem slow sometimes.

Needless to say, I've been eyeballing a 3GS for some time, but I still don't qualify for a price break on an upgrade--not until April, 2010, according to AT&T.

So if I want to replace my 16GB 3G with a 32GB 3GS, it'll cost me $499. It'll be a warm January day in Michigan before I spend that kind of money on a phone.

Ah, but there's another option. I can get a refurbished 32GB 3GS for $349 (provided I sign on for another two years with AT&T, of course). That's a little more reasonable, and here's the kicker: Guess what a used iPhone 3G will fetch on eBay these days?

You guessed it: right around $350. (Sometimes even more.) That amazes me right down to my sneakers, but I guess people are willing to pay handsomely for an iPhone that's free and clear of AT&T and ready for jailbreaking.

So--and this is what I'm telling my wife--I'd be crazy not to do this. After all, I do write about the iPhone for a living. I should have the latest model, right? Right? Honey, put down the rolling pin!

I'm kidding--I do most of the baking in this house. But I'm not kidding when I say I can't see any downside to making this move. Even if my old crank-start 3G brought in only $300 on eBay, I consider $50 a perfectly reasonable upgrade expenditure.

Obviously your mileage may vary, like if you're moving from an original iPhone or looking at a 3GS with 16GB instead of 32GB. Heck, you might be able to come out ahead on the transaction.

Thoughts? Discuss.

how about you wait another 6-8 months and get the next gen model. I'm holding out until they add a few more features to it. Like a better camera for one.

Definitely considered that, but I'll probably have the same option available to me then, or shortly thereafter.

Used 16GB iPhone 3GS sells over $500 on eBay. More than makes up for the $200 + $175 ETF + $36 Activation fee = $411. Which is exactly why I'm selling mine now that I've got the Droid.

There is a downside to this ( which is why i am not upgrading from 3g to 3gs ). Do you really want to stick with ATT another 2 years, when the iPhone MIGHT be available on other carriers next year? If they come out with the new model and still ATT, then I will consider renewing and selling my 3G.
An upgrade from 3g to 3gs is not a "must have" like from the 2g to 3g.

I really have no problem with AT&T. Granted, I don't travel much, but coverage is absolutely fine in my area of metro Detroit.

I did the stupid thing in the world, but clean up my mistake quick fast. I got my 16GB 3G iPhone like 3-4 months before 3Gs came out. Me personally I don't see the point in having 32GB of storage. I don't use even half of my memory ( 8GB ) on a 16GB iPhone 3G. Now how I fix it... I did exactly what you said rick. I went on eBay sold it for $400, Than upgraded to a new 16GB 3Gs with a new AT&T two year contract. You might be better off just upgrading to 16GB 3Gs, if you don't use all that much memory. You probably get a better price on a used one also. You win some, and you lose some... Good luck! I say go for it. Sell it on eBay "Out with the old and in with the New" Well worth it!!! =)

Question, all of the iPhones on Ebay say "unlocked." If I go to sell mine, would it be unlocked? I guess this is a stupid question, but I just want to be clear about what I need to do besides take out the sim card and put it up for sale on Ebay.

I have already done this twice, for me and my wife. My wife inherited my edge iphone when I upgraded to the GS. SInce that time she has gone from edge, to 3g, to 3gs with a total out of pocket expense of $50.00! The edge iphone sold for $250 on ebay, bought a 3g for $99, then used my sons upgrade for a GS and got a 16gb for $199. The only other thing to consider is those pesky ebay fees, usually about 5 to 8% when its all said and done between listing fees, final value fees, and paypal fees. It doesn't seem like much but when you start getting into $500 dollars or more to sell a GS it adds up quick.

For a 32 GB 3GS

Option 1
$499 - $300 = $199 for a brand new 3Gs and you still have your upgrade with AT&T available to you next year that you can put towards the new iPhone when it comes out. Also you won't be tied to a contract and can ultimately decide at that time if you want to stick with AT&T or go another route.

Or

Option 2
$349 - $300 = $49 for a refurbished 3Gs and you extend your AT&T contract two years onto your contract end date which isn't up until next year and you loose your upgrade that would be available to you next year.

I am sorry but Option 1 looks so much more promising and paying $199 for a brand new phone is exactly what you pay for top of the line smartphones at their subsidy pricing with other carriers. You need to think about this more I think. A $150 savings is not even the total amount of the AT&T ETF if you go with Option 2.

Please clarify comments under Option 1. You would lose your upgrade and extend your contract under AT&T for two more years if you upgraded to either the new 3GS or the refurbished one. You lose everything in both options at least according to AT&T's website which shows a 2 year commitment required for both under the upgrade option.

I bought the original 8GB iPhone on opening day for $600. Apple gave me $100 back. Net $500. I bought the 16GB 3G when that was introduced. Cost $300. New Total $800 (following me, so far?) Sold original iPhone on ebay for $450. New Total $350. Bought the 32GB 3G[S] right after intro for $300. New Total $650. Sold 3G on ebay for $345. New Total $305. Every year my total cost goes down, I get a brand new phone with all the new features, twice the memory and a new battery.

I used to work for AT&T so I'm loyal and not likely to want to switch carriers anyway.

as an computer IT professional i hope all of you are using 3rd party apps to wipe your phones before you sell them on ebay or any other site. I have successfully restored several refurbed iphones that i recieved just to see if i could revocer the data. YOU WOULD BE SHOCKED AT WHAT I WAS ABLE TO RECOVER. Please get informed and be sure to properly wipe your iphones before you sell them.

Secondly i am also stuck with a 3g until Dec 09. Will def wait until next June for the new verson of the ihopne to come out. That way i can upgrade for $199 or even less according to what i hear. Hope new ver has an improved camera, video, video cam on front and removeable batery got gods sake! iphone batteries SUCK!. No prob with ATT in my area but would def welcome verison if iphone was avail. WOnt happen til atleast 2012. so sad. Apple is losing out on all that $$$. just my 2Cents

Why not just wait until April 2010 when you qualify for an upgrade. It is only 6 months away.

Are you that much of a consumer that you need to replace your phone after 1 - 1.5 years already? This is what is wrong with this country...buy buy buy...the moment you buy a piece of technology it is obsolete. There is something better, fast, cooler, etc the next day.

I am so happy NOT to be under contract with A T and T that I will just wait until there are some legitimate choices of other carriers available or A T and T unlocks tethering and upgrades the 3G network in my area. If I am going to be attached at the hip to A T and T it has to be good for me also. For me, at this time, the benefits of upgrading from 2G to 3GS do not justify entering into a new contract with A T and T .

So I'm asking again, to prepare my phone to sell on Ebay, is there anything else I need to do besides wiping it and removing the SIM card? I know how to sell stuff on Ebay, that's not the question.

Yes, if you want to fetch top dollar you need to jailbreak and then unlock it. That way your potential buyers are not only ATT, but also Tmobile customers. There is a learning curve to unlocking it, but not overly difficult. Try blackrain, it's the easiest jailbreaking tool.
