You can still break even on iPhone 3GS upgrade
Your mileage may vary, but you should be able to sell your iPhone 3G for the same price as a refurbished 3GS.
So it has come to this: My iPhone 3G is a year old and out of warranty. Its battery ain't what it used to be. And, heavens, does it seem slow sometimes.
Needless to say, I've been eyeballing a 3GS for some time, but I still don't qualify for a price break on an upgrade--not until April, 2010, according to AT&T.
So if I want to replace my 16GB 3G with a 32GB 3GS, it'll cost me $499. It'll be a warm January day in Michigan before I spend that kind of money on a phone.
Ah, but there's another option. I can get a refurbished 32GB 3GS for $349 (provided I sign on for another two years with AT&T, of course). That's a little more reasonable, and here's the kicker: Guess what a used iPhone 3G will fetch on eBay these days?
You guessed it: right around $350. (Sometimes even more.) That amazes me right down to my sneakers, but I guess people are willing to pay handsomely for an iPhone that's free and clear of AT&T and ready for jailbreaking.
So--and this is what I'm telling my wife--I'd be crazy not to do this. After all, I do write about the iPhone for a living. I should have the latest model, right? Right? Honey, put down the rolling pin!
I'm kidding--I do most of the baking in this house. But I'm not kidding when I say I can't see any downside to making this move. Even if my old crank-start 3G brought in only $300 on eBay, I consider $50 a perfectly reasonable upgrade expenditure.
Obviously your mileage may vary, like if you're moving from an original iPhone or looking at a 3GS with 16GB instead of 32GB. Heck, you might be able to come out ahead on the transaction.

An upgrade from 3g to 3gs is not a "must have" like from the 2g to 3g.
Option 1
$499 - $300 = $199 for a brand new 3Gs and you still have your upgrade with AT&T available to you next year that you can put towards the new iPhone when it comes out. Also you won't be tied to a contract and can ultimately decide at that time if you want to stick with AT&T or go another route.
Or
Option 2
$349 - $300 = $49 for a refurbished 3Gs and you extend your AT&T contract two years onto your contract end date which isn't up until next year and you loose your upgrade that would be available to you next year.
I am sorry but Option 1 looks so much more promising and paying $199 for a brand new phone is exactly what you pay for top of the line smartphones at their subsidy pricing with other carriers. You need to think about this more I think. A $150 savings is not even the total amount of the AT&T ETF if you go with Option 2.
I used to work for AT&T so I'm loyal and not likely to want to switch carriers anyway.
Secondly i am also stuck with a 3g until Dec 09. Will def wait until next June for the new verson of the ihopne to come out. That way i can upgrade for $199 or even less according to what i hear. Hope new ver has an improved camera, video, video cam on front and removeable batery got gods sake! iphone batteries SUCK!. No prob with ATT in my area but would def welcome verison if iphone was avail. WOnt happen til atleast 2012. so sad. Apple is losing out on all that $$$. just my 2Cents
Are you that much of a consumer that you need to replace your phone after 1 - 1.5 years already? This is what is wrong with this country...buy buy buy...the moment you buy a piece of technology it is obsolete. There is something better, fast, cooler, etc the next day.
