Now that we're past the official release of Windows 7, most new PCs should come with it pre-installed. But if you purchased a new computer with Windows Vista recently, or for whatever reason end up with a Vista system in the near future, there's a very good chance you're eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade.

From the period of June 26, 2009 through January 31, 2010, many major PC makers are offering free upgrades to Windows 7 for those who buy a Vista-powered laptop or desktop. The deals are all essentially the same, and, as expected, have some exceptions and asterisks.

Click the gallery link below and we'll show you the details for PC brands including Dell, HP, Gateway, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Sony -- complete with upgrade terms and instructions, and links to each PC maker's free Windows 7 upgrade request forms.

Getting your free Windows 7 upgrade is handled through the company you bought your PC from, not by Microsoft, and in most cases you'll have to register and fill out some online forms. Now that we're past the October 22 launch date for Windows 7, you'll receive a physical copy of Windows 7 via snail mail once your submit the proper documentation. The upgrade path looks like this:

Windows Vista Home Premium→Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows Vista Business→Windows 7 Professional
Windows Vista Ultimate→Windows 7 Ultimate

Using Vista basic? Tough luck! Also worth noting, upgrades are arriving via DVD, so you'll have to have a DVD drive available (although there is a USB drive workaround). Also royally screwed are Netbook buyers who have Windows XP, and are not eligible for the free upgrade.

Gateway's process was easy, and was completely free of charge. +1 for them!

something seems to be wrong with their site. The link for Gateway's free upgrade wont work anymore. The link to the taiwanese works, but not the english. Something's strange here.

HP's process was also easy; scan and upload your proof of purchase - done. Their email says we should receive the upgrade disc between the 30th and the 9th. Looking forward to it.

Hey quick question... I bought an HP Touchsmart with Vista and i'm looking forward to the upgrade. One quick question... how to they charge their Shipping & Handling fee to you. Do they charge your credit card or do they accept Paypal?
by FreeRange1 October 23, 2009 10:12 PM PDT
The answer to the headline is real simple - you should have bought a Mac!

@FreeRange1,
You know, I love my Macs and have three of them currently. Your comment however is really less than useful. Buying Mac or not has absolutely nothing to do with an upgrade offer from another company.

Guess there has to be at least one in every group,..

You should get a free upgrade for Apple. They charge twice as much for the same hardware as anyone else, they should have plenty in reserve. I like getting the best and don't mind paying for it, but Apple is a year behind the hardwaret you can get for a PC, and they charge twice as much.

Really...I bet crapple is planning to go terrorist on windows 7. The only thing that can save them now, are their Ipods.

I wanted to, but then I would have to do a clean install of Windows 7 over OSX. Microsoft didn't provide any direct upgrade path from OSX to 7

honestly, if you wanted XP it was your choice, downgrading doesn't and shouldn't net you a upgrade x2

if you self assembled like me, you are out of luck

btw this upgrade program is from manufacturer in order to lure customer in sight of win7 coming so....
by voyager529 October 27, 2009 12:38 PM PDT
if you self-assembled and bought an OEM copy of Vista premium/biz/ultimate between those dates, you should have gotten a Win7 upgrade voucher that you can redeem online.

I just ordered mine. Vista Ultimate 64bit for $189 WITH the Free Windows 7 Upgrade. Not sure if I'll install right away or not. Haven't had a single problem with Vista. In fact, I'm finding it more solid than XP. No BSOD's. And if an update fails for some reason, Vista fixes it, where as XP would have me do it myself.

I bought a Dell Studio last month withVista Home Premium 32 bit, waiting for shipment of 7 32 bit from Dell, pretty easy, completely free; but, I want 64 bit when I go to 7, Dell says they can't do it. Any way Microsoft will give me the 64 bit OS with a 32 bit certificate of authenticity?

Windows 7 Home Premium should ship in both 32- and 64-bit versions in the DVD case.

Personally on my fresh install of Windows 7, Internet Explorer 8 is working fine, a bit slow, but some pages on WordPress keeps flickering for no apparent reason.

Also, if you're a college student, you are eligible for a student discount upgrade ($29.99 for Windows 7 Home Premium). Here is the link:

Actually you can get Win7 Professional. At some point in the process of ordering there will be somewhere to change the version, I selected Professional and I am enjoying all the virtual XP I can get my hands on right now. Also, Remote Desktop comes in handy.

I have a Lenovo ideapad laptop and had to pay almost $20 for shipping but the actual Windows 7 was free. Thanks CNET for the information.

I will be upgrading to UBUNTU Linux 9.10 which releases in 2 days.

Ubuntu is a community developed operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers.

What does Ubuntu mean?

Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

So I purchased like $500 in software for Windows (Office, PC games, money managers). So when I move to Ubuntu, I can still use them for free, right??

It grinds me that after the Vista debacle MS charges Vista users as much as XP users for the Win 7 upgrade.

I bought an Intel MB that came with Vista Business but I had to use my (legal) Win XP because Vista ran so badly on it. I was stuck buying both of my sons laptops with Vista and had to buy another XP license for one of them because Vista was so slow - dual core Intel with 2Gb memory so h/w was not an excuse.

After all that, MS thinks I should pay the same for a Win 7 upgrade - I will wait and see if they come to their senses...

well done CNET on using an HP computer from 4 years ago, my guess it won't be eligible for the free upgrade...or for the Windows 7 one....
