It's official: solid-state drives are awesome-sauce.
They're fast, shock-proof, battery-friendly, cooler-running than traditional hard drives, and, finally, affordable.
Case in point: Today only, and while supplies last, TigerDirect has the OCZ VTX3-25SAT3-120G Vertex 3 120GB SSD for $59.99 shipped. That's after redeeming a $20 mail-in rebate (PDF).
That's one of the lowest prices I've seen on a 120GB SSD, especially one with this pedigree. The Vertex 3 is a 2.5-inch SATA III drive that would make a mighty fine replacement for the pokey old HDD in your pokey old laptop. Of course, because it comes with a 3.5-inch adapter, you could mount it inside a desktop as well.
Either way, this particular drive is widely regarded to be among the fastest SSDs you can buy. Look no further than the user reviews on both TigerDirect and Newegg (where, incidentally, it's $89.99 after rebate) for proof of that; most users cite speed as one of the top features.
Another nice perk: OCZ backs the drive with a three-year warranty.
The only wrinkle here is migrating all your stuff from your old drive to the new one. OCZ doesn't provide any software or cabling to help with that -- but Google has plenty of tutorials on the subject. My advice: Don't clone your old drive. Do a fresh install of Windows on the new one, then install your programs and restore your data.
Anyone, I'm not sure how long these will last at this price, so if you're looking for a decent amount of SSD storage on the cheap, act fast.
Bonus deal: Speaking of cheap storage, while supplies last, OfficeMax has the SanDisk Glide 32GB USB flash drive for $15.99 plus tax. You can bypass the shipping charge by opting for in-store pickup. The Glide has a retractable USB plug and a two-year warranty.
