Peer to peer (P2P) networks allow you to download software as well as music and other types of files. But acquiring software programs from a P2P network is risky, because it's easy for malicious files to be slipped into the file-sharing free-for-all. Unlike Download.com, there's no one in charge of monitoring the quality of the files on a P2P network.
Some types of files are generally safe to download -- particularly audio and video files, because their format makes it difficult for malware to stowaway. But if you download applications and launch anything with the suffix ".exe" you could be opening yourself to a full-on virus attack. This is because viruses, trojan horses, and spyware can easily be stashed in executable files.
If you use Bitcomet to manage your P2P transfers, it's easy to assign your own favorite virus protection program to automatically scan incoming files before you run them. To do this:
1) Launch BitComet
2) Go to the Options menu and choose Preferences
3) On the left side of the preferences window, click on 'Virus Scan'
4) On the right side of the preferences window, use the browse button to locate the virus protection program you'd like to associate with BitComet (you'll need to navigate to the antivirus software's program folder and select the '.exe' file of the program itself)
