The firmware version used by the LN-T81F series, represented in our review of the LN-T4681F, affect two aspects of functionality: whether the LED Motion Plus function works properly, and how the TVs deinterlace 1080i film-based material. The model we tested was using firmware version 1003, which does not pass our deinterlacing test (hence the "Poor" score in the Geek box section of the review). According to the company, later versions, which should represent the majority of 81F models on the market, do pass the test. We verified this claim by installing the latest firmware, version 1008, on our test model in early December, and it did indeed pass.
Aside from 1080i deinterlacing, our contact at Samsung knows of one other difference introduced by newer firmware. On older firmware versions, the LED Motion Plus function is sometimes disabled when the user cycles the power. Upon turning on the TV again, the menu will say that Motion Plus is on, but it's not. Reengaging Motion Plus will turn it back on. Version 1008 software corrects the issue, in addition to correctly processing film-based 1080i material.
Samsung says that 81F models manufactured before August 27, 2007 have the early firmware (version 1003). Models made from August 27 to November shipped with version 1007. From November on, they shipped with version 1008, which is supposedly the final version. One way for owners to check their manufacture date is to look at the serial number (which is on a sticker near the back right side). If the last six numbers start with an 8, then the sample was made in August. If it's a 9, or if there are less than 6 numbers, then it was made later.
Samsung does not provide an official way for users to upgrade the firmware themselves, so if you want the latest firmware, we suggest contacting Samsung customer service (800-SAMSUNG) and voicing your complaint. We suggest mentioning the issue with Motion Plus to get the company to follow through with the upgrade.
Below you'll find instructions on how to check the firmware version on LN-T81F series HDTVs.
1. Turn on your TV.
2. Press the Menu button on your remote.
3. Select Setup, and then press Enter.
4. Select Function Help, and then press Enter.
5. Use the Up or Down arrow button on your remote to move down to Function Help to On, and then press the Enter button.
6. With Function Help On highlighted (don't actually push Enter on it), press the Info button on the remote. Your firmware revision will be listed as two lines of information. The top line is your software firmware. The bottom line is the hardware revision number.
