As we mentioned in the review of the Samsung LN-T4671F, users can experience differences in the performance of the Auto-Motion Plus de-judder modes depending on which firmware version they have. The set we reviewed had firmware version 1013, dated October 26, 2007, and according to Samsung that revision is "final," although we wouldn't put it past them to revise the firmware yet again. The company says that the major change our firmware introduces is to turn the de-judder processing off completely when you select the Off position of the Auto Motion Plus 120Hz menu item. Previous versions, apparently, did not completely disengage de-judder, even when it was set to Off (although selecting Game Mode does turn off that processing, along with introducing other side effects such as removing improvements made to the picture in the Movie preset).
We've heard reports from readers that the blurring effect we noted in the review is more-noticeable and annoying on 71 series Samsung TVs with earlier firmware, and we have no cause to doubt them, although we can only comment on the one model we have reviewed. Readers have reported at least four other firmware versions. Samsung does not provide an official way for users to upgrade the firmware themselves, so if you notice untoward blurring effect and find it unacceptable, we suggest contacting Samsung customer service (800-SAMSUNG) and voicing your complaint.
Below you'll find instructions on how to check the firmware version on LN-T71F series HDTVs. (Thanks, Brad!)
1. Turn on your TV.
2. Press the Menu button on your remote.
3. Select Setup, and then press Enter.
4. Select Function Help, and then press Enter.
5. Use the Up or Down arrow button on your remote to move down to Function Help to On, and then press the Enter button.
6. With Function Help On highlighted (don't actually push Enter on it), press the Info button on the remote. Your firmware revision will be listed as two lines of information. The top line is your software firmware. The bottom line is the hardware revision number.
