    "Beautiful and fast, but ..."

by efalis on February 8, 2006

    Pros: Beautiful, fast

Cons: @## windows, manufacturer software, FAT32 partitions

Summary: I've only had this a day, and it's an impressive machine.

Network, Bluetooth etc work fine. Screen wasn't missing a pixel. Performance is pretty snappy (I do sw development and have a lot of things running at once).

    But...

Why would anyone ship XP on FAT32 partitions these days? Just so I can go reformat them to NTFS? When I tried to add windows components (IIS, Indexing), XP claimed it couldn't copy necessary files, even though they're there on the disk. Working with Acer to find out what that's about.

Also, Linux seems maybe not quite ready for this machine, though my investigation is early.

But most people needn't worry about these nits: it's still an impressive machine and very aethetically pleasing with good performance.

Hello, Ive read a lot of reviews about the Acer 8200 laptop and I have a few questions to sway my final desicion.

1)The FAT32 can be converted to NTFS, correct?

2)The 120GB hard drive speed is 5400RPM, although a 7200RPM would be better, does the hard drive sometimes stop for a few seconds before it starts doing something?

3)How is the 1.3MP camer, is the quality good?

4)Also how is the speed? Can anyone tell me how many seconds it take for the laptop to boot to the login screen?

5)Anything else I should know about before making a decision?

Thank you, if I decide to buy it I will post a few comments about my experience!

I have been searching exhaustedly for 2 hours. Really draining. Than I found this at http://www.google.is/search?hl=is&q=acer+windows+components+iis+&lr=

    Problem:

I can't install additional windows components like the Internet Information Server

    Solution:

This issue can happen due Windows XP SP 2. Please type in Start/Run following command :

    esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb

Im really glad that the problem is gone, and its quite funny how easy it looks for the guy to solve the problem. In the same time it makes me really frustrated :)
Do yoy know what this command does?
