"HOT Computer...and I mean hot !"
Pros: Design, great software included, wide-clear screen, isight camera, fast !
Cons: runs extremely hot
Summary: This is a great computer with a great set of features and software, but its use is hampered by the heat on the left side of the keyboard. It is unbearable !
I took it to two Apple Stores and in both occasions the "geniuses" told me that the heat generated was under spec ! Makes me wonder, did I buy a high-end laptop or a barbecue grill ? Well, I still have it, and had to buy the ILap, which makes it bearable to have it on your lap without toasting your nuts. For $2,500 I'm willing to keep it and burn my wrists a little bit, just because Apple says its ok, I can take the pain, it would be good for me (Right...)
This is my first Mac and I expected a high quality product, instead, I got a beautiful laptop with performance issues that makes you wonder if Apple is all about hype and no substance. This just makes me think that PCs and Microsoft were not that bad and evil afterall.
Finally, I have to admitt that this is a difficult review to make, because I really like the concept of this laptop, but just can not forgive the fact that for this kind of money they are selling a product with this kind of issues.

what a completely useless review, rate a laptop solely on the heat it puts off.

With so much speed, power and performace there is a price to pay (heat). I also have a hi-perf Dell laptop that generates at least as much heat if not more (it's burned me before and the paint is peeling off the case)--heat is a natural byproduct of any computer since hi-perf requires hi-energy...even the old Atari 800 generated heat!! Considering everything you get with the Apple and the great OS (I've been a MS OS user for years-this is my 1st Apple)...I'll adapt to this minor problem

Ok, I also admit that the heat made by these laptops is a bit annoying without a cooling pad, but you have to remember that the notebook is encased in aluminum. With using aluminum, Apple was able to get away with dissipating heat without as many noisy fans. Also, less fans frees up real estate under the hood. That's why you get a notebook that's only an inch thin. I've recently upgraded to the Pro after using a PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz for two years. The same problem occurred, and a $20 cooling pad solved all my issues when on the road or at home. Also, if you're not going to be doing any processor-intensive jobs or anything of the sort while traveling, you may want to consider changing the energy saver settings to better conserve battery life; this reduces the Core Duo's clock speed to just about 1GHz and around 13 watts less power consumption, leading to a cooler notebook. Even with the slower clock speed, the 1GB of standard RAM and fast bus still lets you surf the net, check your e-mail, listen to iTunes, and run most other apps without much lag. I haven't yet tried this on my MBP since I pack an extra battery and the cooling pad, but may be worth a shot for yourself or anyone else in the same situation.
As far as giving the Pro a 4 out of 10, I believe you are underestimating this notebook. Taking consideration of the heat problem, I would at least give this notebook a 6 if not an 8. You get great pre-loaded apps, a stylish exterior, built-in web cam, remote control w/ media center like capabilities, and the greatest OS ever! Not to mention you can always go back and install Windows if you feel the need to downgrade yourself a bit.
