    "Apple Sucks!"

    on June 18, 2003

Summary: Apple sucks! That's exactly what I told the support rep as she told me they were not going to take my brand new G4 Powerbook 17" in for repair. It all started when I received my machine on Saturday, May 10. When I turned it on, I noticed a black spot in the middle of the screen. Immediately, I thought, "Great a dead pixel that's within Apple's specs", but when I looked at it closer, I noticed that it wasn't a dead pixel. It was like a spot of black ink or something on the inside of the screen, and it was obviously not a pixel because of the shape of the spot. Pixels are perfectly square, and are easily seen when you look at your screen closely. This was not the shape of a square. It is more like a circle. To verify this, I downloaded some software that tested for dead pixels, and sure enough, it was completely obvious that this was not a dead pixel. At any rate, I called Apple's tech support immediately and they said to take it to CompUSA so I did. The CompUSA tech there agreed that it wasn't a bad pixel(s), and even put in the notes that it wasn't. He told me that the Apple technician would need to look at it before it was sent to Apple's repair center. That was fine with me, and three days later they told me that the Apple tech looked at it and agreed that it was a defective screen and sent it to Apple for repair. Well, a week later, I pick up my Powerbook excited about the new screen only to find out that they did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! The notes stated retunred unrepaired - screen within spec. Needless to say, I was somewhat disappointed. The first thing I thought was, "If it's within spec, why did it get shipped to Apple in the first place??? Why do these Apple techs have conflicting opinions regarding this spot on my $3300 laptop??? So, I spoke with three different people at Apple and the last lady I spoke with talked to me like I was an idiot, and after informing her that I've owned 10 laptops the past 4 years, including one with a 15" UXGA display (1600 x 1200 resolution) and have seen numerous dead pixels (big and small), I know what one looks like, and that someone made a mistake. Then she flat out told me, "You're not returning your laptop and we're not fixing it." I asked if there was someone else I could speak with regarding this issue, and she told me that there was nobody else and she was speaking on behalf of Apple so I told her, "Well, Apple SUCKS! So what do you think about that???" She said nothing, and now I've paid $3,300.00 for a defective laptop so the value in my opinion is a "1". The quality and features are great, but this whole experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth about Apple. I'm beginning to wonder if I should have ever made the switch. At least PC Techs know the difference between a pixel and a black spot!
