Just as every tug-of-war team needs a big man with a temper to wear the loop around his waist, so does every line of Canon PowerShots need a 3-megapixel Digital Elph to anchor the rest of the series. Enter the PowerShot SD200, a 3X-zooming newcomer powered by Canon's new Digic II image processor; with the upgrade, the silver SD200 promises faster shot-to-shot times and better video performance than its popular predecessor, the PowerShot SD110.

Upside: The upgrade to a 3X optical zoom means that Canon has finally ditched the lowly 2X on its entry-level models, and the 35mm-equivalent lens is a nice bonus for better wide-angle shots. The PowerShot SD200 also boasts a large 2-inch LCD, as well as a decent crop of adjustable options in manual mode, and as long as you have space on your SD card, it can capture full-resolution burst-mode stills at 2.4fps and 640x480 video at 30fps.

Downside: The SD110 suffered from poor autofocus in dim light, so it'll be interesting to see if similar lighting problems affect the SD200's rated speed.

Outlook: Spec-wise, the Canon PowerShot SD200 has addressed nearly every concern we had with the SD110. We'll have to see how the SD200's image quality rates when production models become available. Retailing for $299, the SD200 will ship in October.
