"Great value, but be wary of unfixable problems"

by silentghost on July 3, 2005

Pros: Low price, very fast specs, Dell quality

Cons: Faulty fan, cheap cooling setup, Dell quality

Summary: Five months after the standard warranty runs out, the system/chassis fan begins to make a noise, like a constant clicking noise. Inspected the tower and all parts, nothing appears loose and nothing got into the system. Most likely a faulty fan, perhaps the bearings are to blame. Searched online, found it to be a BIG BIG problem with the Dimension 4600. Cannot be fixed because if the fan is proprietary (Dell quality) and if it is replaced, user will always get a fan failure error message upon bootup. The computer works fine except the fan noise is very annoying at times.

I've had a Dell 4600 for about 4 years and just have been thrilled with it. I have the P4, 3.0 Ghz/ 2 mb of ram with two HD and the machine has been on 24/7 just about the whole time I've had it. I have never had a noise problem execpt when I needed a Power supply which is all I've needed to correct. Since I never shut this machine down except to boot it I feel it's been about the best machine I've have.I havet 7 Dells and happy with them so far. The 4600 has surrond sound with excellent sound. I just received a Dell XPS M1530 Laptop. My first laptop and enjoying it. My 4600 is still just going strong. Have you checked you power supply? As I mentioned my 4600 is still on 24/7 and having to replace a power supply (about $40) seems like very little to replace after all the work that machine has been through. Good Luck!

This may be unorthidox, but I hope it helps someone in the future. I determined that the source of the noise of my Dell 4600 was simply vibration between the fan and the case, not really the fan itself. I put some silicone form-a-gasket on the lands of the fan where the fan contacts the case and it reduced the noise to a great extent. I wish I'd done it years ago.

My son has a Dimension 4600 purchsed 10/03. He was fortunate (?) enough to have his fan fail before the warranty expired. Had it replaced....twice... and has been ok since. BUT...the power supply recently failed and now out of warranty. Bought a DELL replacement for 29.99 from DELL and now all is well
