"Overall including Dell service a solid 8"
Pros: Mature looking, flat panel and economical
Cons: No hardpaper manual and typical trial software
Summary: I purchased a Dell e310 in mid-December 2005 and it arrived as expected. Brand new in the box, no damage and very easy to put together and fire up. Everything was fine, no system crashes and all hardware and software worked effortlessly until almost three monthes to the day. I was almost knocked out of my chair when out of nowhere without warning I had experienced the blue screen of death while surfing the web. The bright blue screen was scary indeed and at the end of the technical jargon came the words ? System dump complete!! I immediately called Dell and after a few minutes of talking to a machine, I was connected to a real person who sounded like Apooh from the Simpsons. The tech was polite and asked me if I would do some partial disassembly and diagnostics over the phone to speed the repair process. I said I can. After about an hour and a half, he concluded that the motherboard failed and immediately set up a in-house service call. Unbelievably, the very next day at 9:00 am, a computer geek called and was in my house 45 minutes later. He installed the new motherboard, no questions asked and was gone in an hour. This happened on March 17th. Certainly a machine like this should last more than three monthes, so I still feel unsure about rating this product. However, even with the motherboard failure and assuming it will be ok, I have to give the machine a solid 7 for value, and give Dell?s response to my problem a 10.
