"the best value ultra-portable"
Pros: lightweight (4.1 lbs), small, excellent screen, quiet disk drive
Cons: size of higher capacity battery (but not that bad)
Summary: I bought this ultra-portable through the Navy Exchange so I got it cheaper than most but I would have easily spent more if I had to. This is the best valued ultra-portable out their. period. Forget the Sony Viaos. This is great for school (thats what I use it for). It is the same width as a regular textbook and fits easily in a bookbag. The battery life is llooonnnngggg (about 5 hours) with the higher capacity battery.
Forget CNET's con of no multimedia controls, you don't need that junk with this. Another thing, the optional dvd drive is so quiet you have to check to see if it's even running. The screen is awesome. It is small (12 inches) but, it's good enough, a lot better than a portable dvd player and almost the same size. Highly, highly recommend this for business users and students. The claim CNET makes about this model using old parts is not that big of deal.
Get this laptop if your looking for portability!

I work as a consultant in the Middle East. This requires me to be very portable. The Dell Inspiron 710m gives me that mobility. There are plenty of occasions when I have to sit in a vehicle for several hours. I never have to worry about running out of battery.
The brilliant screen provide incredible detail and the wide screen format allows for WYSIWYG word processing so you don't have to squint or scroll laterally.
The only issue I have is the unit doesn't come with built-in BlueTooth. No big deal because a dongle is only $25.
I've used Dells for years and this is the best yet. I hope they continue to make a samll format notebook.
