"Excellent laptop-- Did you know you can haggle with Dell?"
Pros: Very powerful, excellent multitasker, big screen
Cons: Battery life
Summary: This laptop is wonderful. It has great aesthetic beauty (it could rival a Mac). Also, it processes very well with the new Core Duo. I ripped and encoded a DVD the other day, and it did it in much less time than my old P4 laptop, and experienced no slowdown in the meantime. The screen is great, huge, and has very little of this alleged "light leakage", although I suppose someone who designs graphics or something might be affected. I also like the Dell MediaDirect, which avoids wasting start up and windows processing time. In addition, the speakers sound way better than one would ever expect for a laptop.
My only concern is the battery life. I was mistakenly sent the 6-cell battery, which appears to get only 1.5 hours of life!!! Now, I have ordered the nine-cell, so I'll have to wait and see, but if it got 2.5, that'd be acceptable.
Overall, I highly reccomend this attractive and powerful laptop. Just make sure you call Dell instead of ordering online. They negotiate prices!!! I got mine with the Core Duo T2600 down from 2600 to 2100 dollars!

i have the same setup as yourself and mine was $638-50=588 mail in rebate for the 4 year warranty. off of dell premier core duo t2600 100 5400 rpm gb hd 1 gb ram dvd-rw with the 256 ati video and sound blaster sound card and tv tuner and the 9 cell. so if you can get on premier dell i think its well worth it.

Dell offers a 21 day return policy. When I called & requested to return my laptop, the rep offered to knock down an extra $300 my purchase price. It was a total savings of $650! (I had a $350 coupon when I ordered my laptop)

I noticed that in the user configuration and also in the CNET review, the GeForce 7800 video card was available for the E1705. But when I went to Dell to configure a E1705, the only video upgrade option was the 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory. It seems the GeForce 7800 is no longer available. Can anyone tell me if this ATI card is at least as good as the 7800? Thanks.

Looking at your price, its clear you didn't use one of dell's weekly coupons or either $550 off or $650 off depending on the base price. You would have saved even more money if you ordered online and inputed one of those codes. Dell actually made money off of your haggeling b/c you didn't use one of their coupons. Check out www.fatwallet.com for more of those coupons.

I don't understand why there are so many comments about the poor battery life, as I routinely receive about 5:15 hours of life with the display brightness full-up (and Wi Fi and Bluetooth on) and closer to 6:00 hours with the display brightness lowered. This is using the 9-cell battery. I find this extraordinary and couldn't be more pleased.

I Agree this is the BEST laptop I have ever owned. Had it for a week now. I researched for 2 months, Got my price from calling dell and it was $3,254.00 out the door!
SO I took a chance and looked on ebay and found it there NEW In The Box (Not a Factory serviced or remanufactured) With FULL Dell Warranty! My Cost was $1,625.00 Plus $90.00 for shipping and insurance.
it arrived within 3 days. SUPER SAVINGS OF $1,539.00 So I ask again, Why Haggle With Dell? -
I am really considering purchasing this laptop. I'm in the market for a quiet laptop. I work online and run multiple applications. Is this laptop silent? Does the noise that this system generates distract you at all? Please w/b. Thanks

Also was the original 2600 price you posted the base price (without the current 20% off promotion on their website)? If so getting an additional $500 was a great deal. If not, then not so great as there is an affiliate coupon for $650 off 2K for Inspiron notebooks.
