    "Widescreen makes a difference"

by tekcpaguru on April 23, 2006

Pros: Dual Core is very fast, good battery life, soft keyboard, feature rich, generally quiet

Cons: Adjusting to lower screen brightness creates a buzzing noise which can get annoying.

Summary: My Config - 1.66 Dual Core, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB 7200 Hard drive, Intel Video Chipset

Overall I'm very happy with the Dell D620. The widescreen adds more real estate to work with such as working in Outlook or Excel. I went with the 7200 hard drive and 1GB RAM which made this system blazing fast. I would recommend the 7200 drive.

I only had the option to get the intel video chipset which seems to work well, but I haven't tested video or tried gaming. I don't know if the Nvidia option will come back.

Although this offers the embedded broadband option (Verizon or Cingular), I opted to go with a Sprint connection card. In the past, I've been disappointed with these "broadband cellular" claims but with EV-DO it really is fast, about as fast as my cable modem at home. I need this to RDP into servers to administer and perform maintenance and have had no problems. If you are a mobile roadwarrior and considering mobile broadband, it may be worth the investment.

Cons - When I lower the screen brightness or turn on the auto light sensor, the screen creates a humming or buzzing sound which I think is by design but can be a little annoying. It reminds me of when a processor fan starts grinding against the casing so I originally thought it was the fan but then realized it happens when there is a dimmer resolution. When I am at highest or lowest brightness settings this noise goes away

    Hello there.

Thanks for your post, BUT, I need to ask, due to Dell's CRAPPY and BAD sells work and POOR and PATHETIC customer service. Here is what I mean:

Last year I called Dell to buy a notebook. I asked his oipinion(s) on what would be good for me, based on what I wanted to spend and what all I wanted to do with it.

The Dell salesmen then asked me more questons about what all I wanted to do with the notebook, and I told him. He said he would recommend the Inspiron 6000 with some upgraded features, components, etc.
So, I shelled out almost $1,700 with extended Complete Care Warranty, and waited for it to arrive! It did, and all seemed well until my 11-year old son started using the above mentioned Inspiron 6000 to play computer games -- both from CD's, downloads, and interactive online Internet games (like Guild Wars, Marrow wind, Splinter Cell and a few others!)

** Well, Guess What!?! The Dell Notebook would NOT play them!!! I began to make calls and do some research, and the crapping problem lies in the ****-poor quality and ability of the Video Card!!! The stupid, lying, deceiving, ignorant salesmen from DELL sold me a computer that WOULD NOT do what I TOLD HIM I needed it to do!!!

And Dell WILL NOT do anything about it or help me out AT ALL! They say it will cost about $600 plus labor to replace the Video Card and the Motherboard, because the Sorry Intel Video card has to be replaced along WITH the mother board on this type. So, They say they will not help me out. But it is Dell's fault 100% due to THEIR Salesman selling and recommending this Inspiron 6000 to me AFTER HE asked me what all we would do with it.

Question: Any ideas? Anyone from Dell reading this and will agree to help me and correct Dell's mistake? Anyone else have this same type problem occur to you? Let me know, please.

    thanks, Robert
