    "EXCELLENT PC"

    Pros: full x16 pci-e slots for max sli power

    Cons: TOO EXPENSIVE

    Summary: Just got my delivery. 4 YEARS COMPLETE CARE $500. First Thing out of the Box. Tried installing ADOBE 6.0 Full Version.
    Froze for 10 Minutes Finally rebooted. Came about Physical Dump memory. rebooted again. Same message. Got pissed off and called the tech support. THREE HOURS ON THE PHONE. both cordless phones dead. So reinstalled the windows from the cd i got. installation message. Two partitions. first for dell utilities and 2nd for operating system.... installed their. finished installing. 4 hours down the drain so far. went to sleep got up and called tech support. no application cds. some body answered after 2 and half hours. said will send cd's in mail. will get them in 3 business days. today is the 9 business day no cd's. told him it keeps crashing.... said let's install from the image oka.... THEY NEVER CREATED A BACKUP OF MY IMAGE. HOW STUPID ARE THEY.
    PAID $4800 DOLLARS FOR THIS PIECE OF JUNK TOLD THEM TO COME AND PICK IT UP OR IT'S OUT OF THE WINDOW IN 3 DAYS. IT'S BEEN 9 DAYS NO BODY CAME. PUT A STOP PAYMENT ON THE Credit cards used to buy this. TOLD THEM NEVER BOUGHT IT. Canceled the payment.

    I've had a horrible experience with this computer, starting within hours of initial set-up. The diagnostic lights confirmed the first of many crashes. Had to open up the tower, and re-set the pw pins on the motherboard. After that, it was a call to tech support on average every 5 days. Computer would crash, mouse would lock up, screen lock up, you name it. I started losing programs---games disappeared, Windows player 10 stopped recognizing my MP3, 3 days later, the Media Center lost all 403 of my albums. Oh they were there, just all unknown. Tried calling for help---nothing worked. Microsoft Office disappeared, but magically re-appeared. Then, the Blue Screens started showing up with various error messages. The messages depended on what the tech would have me un-install or re-install. I called so frequently that now, my case is automatically referred to a case manager. My computer died completely last week with Blue Screen after Blue Screen of error messages. The first tech finally sent out a tech guy to install two new drives(CD/DVD)--because both crashed at once. (!) Another tech said I had a bad Controller. Had a new one installed last friday---and the screen showed that Windows was corrupted. Did a hard drive erase, re-installed the OS like Ahmedfarhan did...and it is still crashing.!
    It locked up after the OS finished downloading..and I tried re-installing McAfee and tried to get my ISP back up and running. Computer kept locking, and I'm still getting Blue Screen error messages. Dell will not take this thing back or replace it. In the meantime, I'm racking up hours of useless help. I too would like to get my money back..unfortunately we paid for it in total---trusting in a Dell product. I still have this $4000 useless, huge machine taking up space in my office.
    I'm thinking of calling the Better Business Bureau and the Consumer Magazine on one of the SF television stations to get some kidn of resolve because Dell isn't doing ANYTHING.

    First off so its relevant could something of happened to the system due to the intense heat you would get with a decked out system which I'm guessing you had with a 4800 system. I mean I'm guessing you had a dual graphics card system with a relativly fast HD probably the physics accelerator anyways the point is the system was power pact but at the price of power here there is a lot of heat expecially with pc parts which pretty much try to give you the most power and don't pay attention to heat output. I think someone mentioned something similar like this going from a raid 0 to a raid 1 system anyways its hard to believe this would be the problem out of the box but its possible just a suggestion sorry about your system btw that sucks.

    I was looking into buying an XPS until I read this, good thing I allways check CNET before I buy something. Now that I've allmost completely thrown away the thought of buying an XPS, what should I buy instead?

    I was going to buy a dell xps 170 until i read the review on cnet. there were many complaints and then I was going to buy a dell 600 because i thought that it might be cheaper, boy was i wrong, I don't think that i'll be buying any dell products anytime in the near future. but I still might consider it seeing how it's the only computer company i know of the allows you to customize your computer. Is dell really that bad??? If anyone can help me make a correct computer choice please do so.

    I can confirm having similar problems right out of the box. Dell techs are all nice folks with lots of apologies, but getting call backs from them makes their promises just another version of the three greatest lies in the world. Over a month of heartaches and lost time troubleshooting problems that should never have left the factory and it still doesn't work. The editor's rating is far too generous and is probably based upon a specially built version for Cnet's testing. A 4.7 would be more like it. I ordered a Rolls and got a Kia !

    Got the XPS 600 dual core Pentium D 3.0 GHZ delivered this past friday and before I could even get going, the "blue screen of death" pops up and a physical memory dump starts occurring?!?!?! I remembered this post and thought....oh know, should have listened.

    I also waited on hold for at least an hour wanting revenge and got none - NOBODY PICKED UP!! I listed on hold getting more and more angry and it got me knowhere. Don't believe the hype, the service is horrendous.

    All in all, the system has worked perfectly since then. I will however remember this initial experience next time around. Used to only consider Dell...those days are over.

    It seems evident to me just from reading your post there was heat related problem with your computer. I don't know why Dell did not think it was necessary to proide in-home service for your new computer, but on the other hand, that is just my opinion.

    At the initial cost of $4800 for a high end system you have every reason to feel upset. I would be irate.

    If Dell provided (at extra cost) the O/S reinstall cd, then no image was made of the original installation. That is the responsibility of the end user, even if the comptuer was configured with a Raid-1 option.

    Installing Adobe anything should not cause a system crash, even if the power went off during the program installation. The computer should resume normal startup once the power is restored with maybe a hickup once the desktop is loaded. The only additional requirement at that point is a program, in this case Adobe, reinstallation.

    I am thinking the Dell technician did not fully understand the extent of your computer problem. Yes, your Dell computer "should" have come with the Dell application software CD's regardless of your system configuration.

    Refusing to pay for your system will only complicate matters. Dell did provide you with the system you ordered and you accepted delivery. What they did not do was resolve your computer problem. You should have a return policy as do all new Dell computers. The return and credit must be performed according to Dell return policy.

    I hope your system has been fixed or your credit issued by now.
