"Gets the job done but screen is dim"

by smiledoctor on June 22, 2005

Pros: Relatively fast, intuitive, spacious keyboard

Cons: Screen is very dim, integrated graphics accelerator is not a bonus

Summary: This is my first laptop which i bought with the money I've saved. I was brimming with anticipation as I eagerly awaited the laptop's arrival.

My dad first noticed that the screen was very dim. I told him maybe he's just not used to it. After 24 hours, I too am beginning to notice that the screen of this laptop is very dim.

Adjusting the display settings or the graphics settings isn't much help. Even with "clear type"setting enabled, reading fonts which are very thin, such as the fonts here in this message can cause eye strain.

On the plus side, the keyboard is a joy to use. It's so comfortable. The scroll pad and the integrated touchpad is very accurate.

The 512 mb ddr ram, 1.6 processor and 60 gb hard drive allows for a relatively faster reacting computer.

All in all I'd say this is a very good computer, i just wish it had a more crisp, vibrant and color-corrected screen

I've changed the settings to increase the font size shown on the screen and that has vastly improved legibility.

Still, graphics are still a bit fuzzy and color saturation is still a bit off.

    Bummer.

I still like the machine though despite its shortcomings as it's very very easy to use and the speed of the processor is more than adequate.

Does anyone know how I can improve my viewing experience?

Adding to my previous post, changing the settings to large font really helps legibility, sadly graphics are still a bit dodgy.

I still love the speed though. The keyboard is a joy to use.

When the laptop is plugged to a socket, the screen appears brighter. After removing the power cable, the screen becomes dim again.

    Darn.

After talking to hp online support, I found out that it's the ambient light detector that is causing the screen to dim.

This laptop has a special power saving feature, once unplugged (if I understand it correctly) it's ambient light detector kicks in and purposely dims the screen if it detects enough ambient light to prolong battery life.

You can disable the ambient light detector by pressing fn f11 and then press fn f10 to brighten the screen and the screen does indeed become accpetably bright and the fonts and graphics much easier to appreciate.

I'm glad I bought this laptop. I really love the keypad.

Thank you so much smile doctor for your tip on brightening the screen ! That was the only complaint I had about mine, now I'm delighted with myself!!!
