    "Great school / home laptop!"

    by holodoctor1 on August 3, 2006

Pros: screen, style, fast, ease of use, light, thin

Cons: touchpad placement, fingerprints, partitioned drive

Summary: I am currently a college freshman who was in need of a great laptop for school and home, and I defiantly found it with the HP Pavilion DV2000t. My last laptop, an old Dell inspiron 8100, was just too heavy and slow to take to college, so I needed something fast and light. The HP falls under both those categories. It's finish and contour is amazing, and the quickplay / media buttons look very refined. The screen is also amazing, and while it's defiantly got some glare, it is very bright. I would also recomend an upgrade to the Nvidia GO 7200 card, which is enough to run Oblivion on a medium graphics setting, and ensures you'll have no problems with dual monior configurations.

My biggest quip with the laptop is 1: the touchpad feel - they put a glossy finish on it which causes your finger to stick to it. And 2: the touchpad placement. Like on all HP pavilion notebooks, the touchpad is placed in the center, which causes the right hand to brush against it when typing. Thankfully, there is a button to turn off the touchpad - but it would have been nice for HP to either move it over a hair, or include some program that would temporarily deactivate the touchpad while typing. This could avoid accidental clicks.

Also, HP partitions 10GB of the drive. It says it's for HP backup services, but they don't give you an option to un-partition it. I would have liked to have the option.

Overall, I am very happy with this laptop. If I had to do it all over again, I would choose the HP DV2000T. (ps - if you're thinking about getting the AMD, think again. You'll get next to no battery life. I love AMD -- I have an AMD chip in my desktop, but AMD is just not made for these kinds of portable laptops.)

I have had my hp dv2000t for over a year now and it is still serving me loyally. I use it for school work, online gaming, as well as music and movie enjoyment. I can run most newer games on low-to-medium settings with pretty good frame rates which is about what I would expect from the 128 MB video card (however if the game requires particularly advanced shaders you will be out of luck). CD and DVD burning is always painless, and there is lightscribe software included which lets you literally burn a label on the top of your disc. There is a bunch of junk "pay me more" software that comes packaged (like blockbuster, aol music, and a bunch of other annoying things) with the operating system, but this is just a minor annoyance as it can all be removed. After owning this laptop for about 8 months the built-in wireless card crapped out on me, dropping connection every hour or so and forcing me to reboot in order to fix the connection. I have since replaced the wireless card with an external usb wireless n adapter which is much faster anyway. Take note that if you want a different internal wireless card you will have to purchase an ExpressCard as regular wireless notebook cards will not fit at all. Other than the issue with the wireless card this notebook has been very good to me and I have gotten quite a bit out of it. Not to mention it is very sexy looking.

Hello Holodoctor1, I really like your comments concerning the HP DV2000T. I just purchased one about two months ago. I had a little adjusting to do in the beginning, but now I really like the old bugger. You are also correct concerning the battery life. It last a lot longer than the one I have on my other laptop. Thanks again for your comments. If really helped me to appreciate it even more.
