"Great Plasma, Great Picture, Great Price!"

by jgrossenbacher on December 29, 2006

Pros: Easy Set Up & Menu Navagation, Great Picture Quality, Best Warranty

    Cons: One HDMI input

Summary: I received this plasma from my wife for Christmas after doing research for about six months. (I did the research, she wrote the check, it was a fair trade.) I was pretty open minded about plasma vs. LCD and was leaning towards LCD, but the pricing and picture quality of this unit in the store compared to others made it easy to decide.

Hooking up this unit was simple, the user manual is very friendly (Although, I didn't look at it until I had it set up, it's that easy.)

    Video/Picture:
I didn't need to do any color adjustment or anything, it was a good look right out of the box. It has a few E-Z Picture viewing modes that worked fine for me (Daylight, Normal, Night Time). If you are a control freak, there are two "User Setting" modes you can utilize to change the picture settings if you wish. One thing, I did change was setting the black level from the default (High) to low. It makes very little difference in the actual picture, but I have read it's a good idea to reduce the contrast level to help avoid burn-in on plasmas. I haven't had any issue with that, but a little preventative maintenance is always a good thing.

    Audio:
We have it set so the audio goes through the surround sound, but I have run the audio without the surround sound turned on, and it is acceptable by itself. I prefer more lows, and the surround sound accentuates that better than the standard speakers, but you will find it acceptable if you are running it without surround sound. There are also some E-Z Sound Modes (Normal, Stadium, News, Music, Theater) that are acceptable. Again for you control freaks, there is a user setting as well.

    Standard/HD Viewing:
We are running this through a cable box via the HDMI connection, so I can't comment on the built in tuner, but I can say this, if you are new to HDTV, prepare to be blown away. I found the standard cable channels to look nice on this TV, but the HD is unbelievable. (The first night I spent flipping from regular ESPN to ESPN HD and being amazed at the difference in quality. ) I'm sure it's the same on most HD sets, but if you haven't yet made the jump to HDTV, do it now.

    Warranty:
This is the only plasma we found with a two year parts and labor warranty. That says something about how they will stand behind their product.

    Price:
We got a great price before Christmas and an extra $100 off for signing up for HDTV at the store, so we walked out with this set, a monster cable power supply/surge protector, and HDMI cable for just over $1,400. We are very happy with our purchase.
