    "Value for money"

    by advait_khare on December 27, 2005

Pros: Excellent outdoor pics, packed with features

Cons: Heavy battery usage, poor quality pics after twilight

Summary: I bought this camera as a beginner in digital photography couple of years back for 120 Euros. (It was reasonably cheap then). I was impressed with its featureset with which I wanted to play around.
This objective was completely met with MDC4000.
    -----------------------------------------
    Taking pictures:
It gets you excellent outdoor pictures. (especially in Sun). I am really impressed with picture quality. The only bad part is pictures taken - during and after twilight.
Taking snaps is a bit tricky though - you have to keep the camera steady for around 4 seconds after taking a picture ! Otherwise the image gets blurred. Except this problem, camera in general is fine. Only that you can't give it to others to get your snap who won't keep still for 4 seconds :D
    Sample picture/s:

    -----------------------------------------
    Taking video/audio:
It offers video capture with rather low resolution (320x240) but ok for experimenting. It stores audio/video in AVI format and hence even Windows Media player can play it.
It also has a TV out which is (or atleast was when I bought this) interesting feature.
    -----------------------------------------
    Using as webcam:
But the best part is - it can be used as a webcam ! You have to install the drivers that come with the camera in CD and reboot couple of times (1 reboot wasnt sufficient for me). But then its cool. Both video and audio are nice while using as webcam. So this saves you some money for sure !
    -----------------------------------------
    Other stuff:
Lastly, there are some options in the software that don't make much visible difference really.
I printed some pictures of size 6x4 inches and were fine.
The camera is quite compact and has no fancy requirements - Normal A4 batteries and SD Card.
The camera is heavy on battery consumption which can be a point to watch out for.
    -----------------------------------------
    Summary:
Overall, its value for money considering its features and is good for beginners. If you have high expectations from the entire featureset, then satisfaction is not guranteed.
