| The good: Offers decent three-way video chat; can send text messages to AIM buddies; provides free access to thousands of chat groups. |
The bad: Plagued by pop-up ads; audio and video not synchronized; no free tech support.
The bottom line: The only reason to download PalTalk is to chat with other PalTalk users. Otherwise, stick with your favorite IM, such as Trillian, which has good interoperability.
PalTalk, a relatively new instant messenger-cum-group chat program, lets you chat with AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) buddies as well as PalTalk friends, but that's not a good enough reason to download it. Its features don't stand up to those of the messengers from Yahoo, MSN, or Trillian. If you want to convene with other PalTalk users, this is your only option. But don't bother with PalTalk as your first or only IM. Give PalTalk Plus, the ad-free, pay-to-play version, a shot if you want group video chat and don't mind the cost. |
