"Not as bad as some folk say, but not great"
Pros: Inexpensive, small, reliable
Cons: Slow transfer
Summary: First of all, DON'T use Philips own music management software. I use Musicmatch 8 and 9 (on different PC's). There's a Philips plugin, and both versions work fine with my player. Version 10's out now, but I've not tried it yet. The Musicmatch "volume levelling" feature also appears to operate when transferring tracks this way. Yes it's slow to transfer files using USB1, but the trick is to prepare and save a playlist in Musicmatch, then transfer the files when it's most convenient for you. Battery life's not bad, but as the rechargeable battery is built-in, you'll need to take the charger with you any time you're away from home. I prefer removable AA batteries for that reason. The random play feature is not as good as I would like. Another gripe is the volume - some earphones are less sensitive than the supplied ones, so I find the maximum volume is too low. Sound quality's OK but not great. Don't waste time trying out the various equaliser settings - they're mostly rubbish. It may seem that I've only been critical here, but I bought the player for £100 in June 2004 and it was good value at that price then. It is reliable and doesn't jump or pause in normal use (walking, gardening, cycling).
