"Steer clear..."
Pros: Small size, intuitive navigation, lots of file formats
Cons: Shoddy manufacturing
Summary: When I first owned this product, I gave it a great review. (If I recall correctly, I gave it an 8 or a 9). Alas, I hadn't lived with it long enough to tell the full story. The manufacturing quality of these players is *bad*. I went through three of them. For one thing, the gap between the buttons and the case is too wide, so anything can get in the player. (That's how player #1 died.) There's no case included, so something bad happening is more likely than you think. Players #2 and #3 died because of the shoddy construction on the scrollwheel. Once that goes on you, you have to move around exclusively with the joystick (which, despite the name, is *not* a joy.)
I'm currently in the market for a new player, but I can't recommend this one in good conscience.

never had a problem with two units over the past years. I would recommend it. Sounds like rio had a bad period of production or something. Mine were fine.

About the Scroll Wheel. take the darn thing apart and glue it back together with superglue. its even stronger than before.

I had a Rio years ago pre-iPod. It was great. Even bought the upgrade. I was very comfortable taking it to the gym and working out with it because it was so small and was sturdy. Then I got hooked on iPods, and I've not had the courage to take my iPod to the gym. I was hoping that Rio would hang in there, but as competition got stiffer, it was recently announced that Rio was bowing out of the business. That's capitalism for ya.

I would give this player a high rating overall, but totally agree with your reliability assessment. The wheel broke within a month or 2 then the hard drive was somehow damaged even with very careful use. THumbs down.
