"An okay player"
Pros: good size, price is decent, accessories are cheap
Cons: no belt clip, menus are poorly organized, battery starts losing power after a year or so
Summary: I've had this player for close to two years. I did not have the initial problems that many people here have had-- it's worked fine up until now, though I've noticed the battery has been lasting less long, and it did turn off suddenly on me the other day but I turned it back on and it was fine.
This was my first MP3 player, I got it for using primarily at the gym, but also for on the bus (I have a long commute). I was dismayed to find there is no clip on this-- I bought a case with a clip on ebay for $6 but it doesn't hold it very tightly and it's kind of awkward. The joystick thing sticks out too far and if you don't have it on lock it's easy to bump it and pause or jump songs. The menu is layed out in a way that does not make sense-- the "playlist" section is very last instead of towards the top. Oh and somehow recently I got a weird (permanent)squiggly mark on the LCD screen. I have no idea how that happened.
When making a playlist you can't add songs-- if you add a song to an existing playlist the software automatically deletes all the other songs on the list which is incredibly frustrating.
I don't have a huge music selection but I have found 1.5 GB to be insufficient-- I spend a lot of time deleting music to make room for new stuff. The Rio is also not compatible with all online music services.
The good things about it are it is one of the smallest ones I've seen, the price was decent ($100 on ebay) and it has held up pretty well for the past two years-- I'm definitely upgrading to something with at least 4GB soon-- probably either the iRiver clix or the Ipod nano.
