The mainstream Toshiba Satellite M30/M35X series comes in a number of configurations that differ primarily in their processors: while the cheaper versions include the Intel Celeron M chip, the more expensive models offer the Intel Pentium M Dothan chip. The laptops also vary in their operating systems, shipping with either Windows XP Professional or XP Home. Finally, the higher-end models include a 5-in-1 slot that accommodates certain flash-memory cards. Otherwise, all systems in the series feature a wide 15.4-inch display, a midsize 60GB hard drive spinning at a slow 4,200rpm, an economical Intel 855GME graphics chip with up to 64MB of shared video RAM, a fixed DVD/CD-RW drive, and a standard 802.11b/g wireless card. Our test unit, the least-expensive configuration of the lot, the Satellite M35X-S163, earned decent performance scores but suffered from very poor battery life. Only students and home users on a budget who need just the basics should consider this laptop. (Note: The Toshiba Satellite M30X and M35X are basically the same system; you can customize the M30X, while M35X models come preconfigured.)
