Publisher's description of Trillian 3.1

From Cerulean Studios:

Trillian is a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. It provides capabilities not possible with original network clients, while supporting standard features such as audio chat, file transfers, group chats, chat rooms, buddy icons, multiple simultaneous connections to the same network, server-side contact importing, typing notification, direct connection (AIM), proxy support, encrypted messaging (AIM/ICQ), SMS support, and privacy settings.

Without stealing your home page and with no other included software, pop-ups, or spyware, Trillian provides unique functionality such as contact message history, a powerful skinning language, tabbed messaging, global status changes (set all networks away at once), Instant Lookup (automatic Wikipedia integration), contact alerts, an advanced automation system to trigger events based on anything happening in the client, docking, hundreds of emoticons, emotisounds, shell extensions for file transfers, and systray notifications.

Version 3.1 adds a new identity feature that helps you organize your home and work contact lists, HTML editing for AIM profiles, UPnP support, enhanced IRC performance, and speed enhancements.

  • "All-in-one IM"

After nearly two years, Trillian is back to claim its rightful title as king of all chat clients. Version 3.0 offers a completely overhauled interface, tabbed chatting, enhanced messaging functionality, improved file transfers, and a new Instant Lookup feature. The program offers simultaneous access to the fab-five chat clients: Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, mIRC, and AIM. By importing your passwords, buddy lists, and client preferences into its own interface, Trillian acts as a hub for all your chat traffic.

Installation and setup are simple, and the included features are useful. You can check supported e-mail accounts with one click, view detailed event logs for each client, and, of course, chat. Plus, each supported chat client has options such as video and voice messaging, SMS support, and file transfers. Trillian also offers skin support, although they can be a bit testy to install. While you'll occasionally lose contact with AIM, that's AOL's fault. Credit Trillian for fixing these blocks quickly.

The best thing about Trillian is that it's absolutely free--there's no adware or functionality limitations. So if you need help managing your schizophrenic chatting identity, this puppy's for you.

    Version: Trillian 3.1

    "King of Chat Clients"

by Free as a bird on March 22, 2005

Pros: I like this product basically because it's "Full featured" and supports other clients. So it's an alternative without the spyware and junk included. I like the tabs features makes it very organized,it can be customized also. I found it easy to use and to import my contacts. It run's fairly smooth, even with all the features, only thing I can complain about is the size of the download and some features are not really needed. I wonder if theres a "Trillian lite" version around here somewhere.

    "BEST Combined Instant Messenger"

by ExtremeDownloader on April 12, 2006

Pros: The interface is extremely nice. Well done! It supports multiple messaging systems, no need to download different IM programs. The preferences has a wide range of options that are very helpful (especially for parents). Other than that, Trillian contains the features that other messengers have.

Cons: Some exclusive features are not included. Such features include MSN Messenger Tabs, Yahoo LaunchCast! Radio, AIM Trivia.

No encryption of messages if both contacts use Trillian.

No taskbar button, only icon in system tray. This makes it harder to see if the window is cluttering the screen if other windows are maximized.

You need to download plug-ins for each messenger system (I guess that can be a good thing, to avoid software bloat).

This messenger is the best IM program used yet. It is included in Google Pack. It can be used when MSN Messsenger, Yahoo! Messenger or AIM is corrupted or irresponsive.

"definitely the best chat client complier"

    by sassy19a on January 25, 2006

Pros: v easy to transfer contacts from other chat clients. also can enable plugins from other chat clients. I esp like their docking feature, which was not seen in MSN, ICQ or Yahoo.

Cons: The chat window is abit too colorful & abit disorganised. Make my head spin while chatting. seem to have a bug in the add Groups and contacts. I can add groups but cant delete them? and the groups added were not shown in the contact list. Hope they ll fix this soon. Otherwise is a marvellous free software.

    "MSN+Yahoo+AIM+ICQ+RC+Googletalk=trillian"

    by pinky_mouse on April 18, 2006

Pros: For me it is the best chat client, instant messenger out there. I prefer it than Miranda and Gaim. If your friends use diferent messengers, trillian is the solution. It supports MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM, IRC and Jabbeer from where I handle my google talk contact. It is not slow, it loads quickly, has nice interface and is very easy to use. Plus it supports the services of the instant messengers which are included.

    Also it has mail notifier.

For those who cannot switch from Basic to Trillian, they should delete the program from the add/remove control panel and after delete the rest from the trilian file at program files. After restart they will be able to switch to pro if they want.

Cons: you should have the latest pluggins(of trillian) otherwise some functions might not work.

For some transfers due to MSN asks you about the latest version of MSN which of course not have but this seldom happens
