"nearly unbeatable network coverage but other annoying issues" on by swamijie

    Pros: extensive and excellent network

Cons: limited and crippled bluetooth, phone and smartphone selection limited but growing, customer service can be great but often average or worse

Summary: For the New York City/Long Island metro area market, that Verizon's network coverage is hard to top can't be denied. Their plans are on par but not necessarily more attractively priced than competitors, as is the case with services such as text/pic/video messaging or data. I haven't investigated or used multimedia services such as downloading video or music, so I can't comment on that, but other's I have talked to have been satisfied. However, attempting to force customers to buy messaging service packages by raising the price of individual messages is not cool, as is the case with forcing customers to use those services by disabling full capabilities of Bluetooth. I currently have the LG Vx 9800 and it's great for text messaging and as a music phone with its miniSD compatibility. I would love to upgrade to a smartphone if Verizon offered a smartphone worth upgrading to. However, prohibitive prices for non-subsidized phones and a generally less than stellar-rated Windows Mobile 5 phone (non-smartphone edition) keep me from doing so. It seems that Verizon is adding better and sleeker phones to their line-up but when compared to the selection offered by Cingular, T-Mobile or even Sprint/Nextel, they've got some catching up to do. Upgrading to a new phone or replacing a lost or damaged phone while under service contract is very pricey. You would think that Verizon would offer under-contract customers, especially those that have renewed multiple times, a discount when upgrading or replacing a phone between New-Every-2 periods but that would cut into Verizon's bottom line and we certainly can't have that! I guess every other cell phone company does the same thing, so, why should Verizon be special? While Verizon's customer service has a few beacons of light that have kept me from leaving them after other reps got me to the point of steaming and feeling the $175 early termination wasn't a fee but a blessing, most of the other customer service reps that I've encountered were either average or below average. Overall, the strength of their network is the best thing Verizon has going for them and is what keeps me tethered to them. I remain hopeful with Windows Mobile 6 being released that better smartphone offerings from Verizon are on the horizon but based on past experience, I'm not holding my breath, especially if Verizon tampers with non-cell phone wireless communications on these phones (such as bluetooth or wi-fi).

"VERIZON WILL KICK YOU OFF NETWORK FOR MODEM CARD USE!" on by NativeBoldburg

    Pros: None~~~!!!!

Cons: Lied about unlimited data card plans~ cost more then sprint for same access~not a loyal company

Summary: i know everyone here is going to have a field day with my review. if you don't beleive that this happen read my complain at the better business bureau. i was a customer with verizon for almost two years. my service was pretty good so i renewed to get a modem card and plan. i was told i would have unlimited data access. so i used verizons evdo in place of my home service. i only used it to surf and download some songs here and there. i did not stream, or file share, or use the service with voip. but since i used this service for work as well as for home use, i used it several hours a day. i had the service for three month, where out of nowhere one afternoon someone from verizon called me and said they were canceling my service. when i asked why they said i was using my UNLIMITED service to often. they refused to let me keep my service and made me pay full price for the modem card. which they refused to let me send back. a company that i was with for over 2 years that i never onces missed a payment. never once yelled at any care person. i never abused my service but because i was using my verizon evdo more then just once a day they let me go. come to find out, that this is very common place. the better business bureau has bucket loads full of complaints from former customers like myself. i even read that if you use more then 500 mbs a month verizon will flag your account for an audit. i'm not making this up but from the look of the comments here someoneone is going to bash me and call me a lier. it really doesnt matter. if you are foolish enough to go with verizon and get a modem card, be prepaid to get booted if you use over 500mbs in a month. i can't belive verizon will charges 60 dollars a month and expects customers to use less then 500mbs a month!
i was forced to leave verizon for sprint. i didnt really want to because i had heard from someone that they werent that good. but i have no had any problems yet. i have found a way to pay less for their evdo by buying a phone tethering plan. 40 a month compared to 60 for verizon. and sprint has not called me once on my web usage. so verizon, you lost a loyal customer! now i'm going to tell everyone not to buy your overpriced lies!!

"Great network but with Sprint I get free Verizon/Alltel voice and web roaming" on by MEGAmanJILL

    Pros: Great network!Great size!

Cons: Can't use any other non-Verizon software. Can't visit full web sites. Can't do anything fun.

Summary: I was with Verizon for a little over a year. At my school, in most of the dorms, Verizon is dependable. The biggest problem for me with Verizon was the lack of features and the price for what little access they give. I couldn't use Vcast. I couldn't set my phone to roam. I couldn't view any live TV. I couldn't add free programs from the web like Opera Mini, Flurry or Gmail. I couldn't view full web sites through the 9800's web browser. To others this is not a big deal but it is for me. If I'm paying you seventy dollars a month, I want everything I am paying for! So I switched to Sprint. Yes I know this is a Verizon review but let me explain. I went into a Sprint store and they told me I could roam, for (FREE) on Verizon's and Alltel's networks. They told me I could set my phone to roam and use every voice and web features for free when I was roaming. They showed me how to do it in the store and I went home with my new service. This is how I look at it.

I can pay for a F&F plan (Which is a type of plan Verizon doesn't offer). I can add the fifteen dollar Moto Q data plan (What Verizon charges Fifty for). I can use any of my anytime and unlimited N&W minutes while I am roaming. And I can use the web while roaming. I even found out that I can still watch TV and listen to the radio when roaming (I couldn't even use Vcast because Verizon doesn't have it in my area). So I get access to three networks (Sprint-Verizon-Alltel) all for the price of one. And I get to use web features that I couldn't with Verizon. This is what makes Sprint far, far, far, far, far, far superior then Verizon. The way I see it, if you pay for Verizon or Alltel, you are paying for the same type of access I get for free with Sprint. 3 networks for the price of 1!

Verizon doesn't offer anything close to this. You can't justify in my mind how Verizon is better then Sprint, when I get to use your carriers network for free!

"Great phone company, but if you want the extras you'll really pay." on by mrzonker

    Pros: Good coverage, decent service

Cons: Expensive base price, crippled features, they nickel&dime you.

Summary: I've been a customer of AT&T (pre-cingular days), Cingular (before merger), and Verizon. I switched to Verizon because Consumer Reports (in 2003) said that they were hands down best for call quality in almost every major urban market. In my experience they were right. Since I mostly use my phone as a phone, Verizon is the place for me. I've had to call customer service a handful of times, and they always speak good English (not obviously outsourced to the lowest bidder), and they have always solved my problems.

But, Verizon is expensive. The plans are pricier than their competitors, and they hit you with fees for almost every feature except voice mail. If you want to take pictures, you have to pay Verizon to get the pictures off your phone. If you want to have one of your mp3 files as a ringtone, you can't do it yourself, even if your phone is bluetooth enabled. You have to buy it from Verizon.

In short, if what you want is a phone, Verizon is great. But if you want a feature packed gadget, go elsewhere.

"locked down and overpriced" on by buffybuffyrabit

Pros: large coverage area, good customer care

Cons: no free content, can't use third party applications, plans cost too much, treo web access cost 44 dollars extra a month!

Summary: i was with verizon for over a year. in that time my service was decent. some dropped calls, a bunch of dead spots, just decent. this would not be that big of a deal if their service didn't cost way, way too much. my bill was over 100 dollars. mainly because they charged me 44 dollars a month to use the treo 650. that is on top of a 56.93 dollar bill. i found many faults while being with them. you have to buy a pda in order to access the full internet. none of their phones come with full web browsers. they all have basic wap 2.0. also you can't view vcast clips if you are not in their wireless broadband coverage area. which is not as large as others. and i don't know who rated them so high in
dependability, but they must have been a sleep at the wheel. t-mobile was the worst service i ever used and even they worked better in my home then verizon.
so in all verizon is not worth what they charge their customers. 100 bucks a month just to get the same type of access i could get from sprint for less, is pointless. you might find them better for your needs. my review is just what i found to be at fault with them.
