On August 26, CNET launched a substantial redesign of its Web sites. As part of the changes, we've altered the rating system to include numerals (1 through 10 with decimals) and a five-star system, with half stars. Nothing changed regarding how we test products or calculate their ratings. (Read more about this process below.) You can send feedback by clicking on the link at the top of this page.

The three surprisingly low-key solar panels (offered in four subtle color options) are in the back of the bag. Our primary concern was that the paneling would be gaudy and out of place, but they blend well into the general styling of the bag. The panels hook up internally through a series of wires and plugs and wind their way into a 2,200mAh lithium-ion battery pack with three voltage settings to store solar power. In our tests, it took several hours to fully juice the battery pack, but Voltaic provides an AC wall charger for days when the sun refuses to come out and play. On the small chance that your phone, MP3 player, or PDA isn't supported by the 11 standard adapters included with the backpack, Voltaic includes a car charger adapter that plugs right into the solar panels. This means that virtually all devices can be directly or indirectly charged by the backpack. Unfortunately, this bag cannot provide enough power to charge a laptop on the run.
