"Shop before you buy"
Pros: Compact size
Cons: Poor bass. Poor midrange.
Summary: My brother-in-law bought the Yamaha 450 home theater in a box last year and he is very happy with it. It is an awesome system for the money. Highs, lows, midrange... it's all there. When the 360 came out this year I was lured by the more "compact" speaker size. Plus, for a short time, Best Buy offered this system with a free Yamaha DVD player... all for $399. I couldn't wait to get this system so I ordered it online.
The red flag went up when I took the bass unit out of the box. This system is advertised as having a "powered" subwoofer. What does "Powered" Subwoofer mean anyway? Apparently it does not mean that it uses an outside power source. The bass unit is wired to the receiver like all the other speakers... no other power source.
When we went to "crank up" the system... well, it didn't.
Don't get me wrong here, $399 with the DVD player was an excellent price (it was a $150 DVD player!). My first thought was to just throw away the bass unit and get another (this still would have been a great price) but on the back of the receiver is a warning lable that says "Only use the bass unit that comes with this system". Bummer.
I returned the system.

Who cares weather or not a bass unit does not plug in separately from the rest of the main unit? Who would want that anyway? What would that mean other than you have another needless plug to plug into an outlet? Show me where this exist and prove it's a qualifier for better sound? Your comment is whack!
