"How to BEST use a Philips MANT940 uhf Antenna"
Pros: It works better that you could ever imagined
Cons: Bring so small you never expect the GREAT results
Summary: First, the front is the thin part of the fin. Now for the good part. If you go to www.tvfool.com you can find the direction (azimuth) of the stations you want to receive. Here is the tricky part, this antenna works best when mounted flat, yes just like you laid it on a table. Use the long edge to aim at your main signal transmitter. If there are other channels to one side or the other turn over the antenna so the thin side is on the same direction. I am picking up channels from over 90 miles.

I've also tried to come up with the best angle for aiming this antenna. I tried your method and my signal got worse, however I'm in a low spot with lots of trees around.
I'm guessing your method might work better with a clearer line of sight.
Where I am (zip 29626 if you want to see my map at TVFool) I get the best reception by positioning it horizontal with the fin down. If the antenna I'm aiming at is due North, then I get much better reception with it positioned so the cable coming out is facing East than pointing the unit 180deg the other way.
My nearest network stations are about 50 miles away and I've spent about 4 hours on the roof working out the best positioning with my wife downstairs yelling out numbers.
My receiver is the $48 Magnavox unit sold at WalMart which is probably relevant as well.
Overall I'm very happy with this unit, I'm in a real dead spot here and now I get 4 strong channels.
