"Intuit Nightmare"
1.0 starson by smythe_911Pros: Easy to use at first, many features
Cons: It will cost you and cost you in the long run
Summary: I am a long-time Quickbooks user.
No longer.
This company is an absolute nightmare.
I have been using the 2001 Pro version for a few years.
I faithfully updated.
Then they "retired" the 2001 version. However, the program doesn't know that and continues to try to update.
Fatal error, since the attempt at update requires that you either fork over $199 or the program becomes disabled.
If you don't buy the update, the message upon trying to re-start Quickbooks then tells you to "re-install" the original version.
However, since with each update your data files are changed to match the updates, the original data files no longer work with the original version.
And unless you purchase the $199 update package, the updates are no longer available to you either by automatic update or online.
So if I ever want to see my company's data again, I must pay them $199 every three years. They quite candidly say on the phone that this is their business plan and if you don't want to pay "there is nothing we can do" about the inaccessibility of your data files due to their direct actions.
Except a lawsuit, of course.
Anyone want to join a class-action lawsuit?
If you are smart, you would switch to the cheaper, almost equally useful accounting programs. Avoid Intuit.

It seems like I have upgraded every few years for the past 10. I have my original copy of QB 97, in my closet, so it's been at least that long. I have never gotten the "buy or die" message, but I have upgraded every few years. I wait until I see the "super deal", I upgraded in 2006 at the end of the year, when Office Depot had a sale @ 179.99, and an $80.00 rebate. so my net out of pocket was not that bad. I remember my last "deal" was a costco deal (I think in 04) for $99.00. I run pro, and for the money, I think you really can't go wrong. Tech support stinks for the price factor, but typically (I only used twice) resolved my issue quickly. I have run as many as three business on it at one time, so that is really a nice thing. My advice.. Time your upgrade at a store with a discount or rebate, and the pill is easier to swallow.

I would absolutely love to see a class action suit thrown at Intuit. They have become such a dominant player in the market, that they now want to control they're customers. Their software is good quality, if not perhaps a bit pricey for what it does, but their business practices are absurd. Doesn't it seem strange to anyone else that they charge for tech support? Doesn't it seem strange that they can get away with locking your books until you pay a ransom? Doesn't it amaze anyone else out there that they can simply make your software stop working on their whim? If your new car stopped running after 3 years, you'd be upset. How mad would you be if the auto maker said, "yeah, we know. We designed it that way. If you want your car to start again, you'll have to pay us more money." Sign me up for the class action. I'd like to slap the Intuit big-wigs right in the mouth.

Thank you for the update. I have always been using the older version for so many years - when Intuit first introduce them. The older sounds better than the newer versions.
