Pros Much easier to move about within the program than earlier versions. The added support is great, when you can access it.
Cons Some very irritating bugs.
Summary The new TurboTax is an improvement over recent versions. (In the previous offerings, I found it cumbersome to move around without repeating multiple steps to get to the page I wanted to view.) Although I didn't use the online support, I was pleased they offered it.
My major complaint deals with the pop up window that opens when you ask for additional information or help on an entry. The information in the pop up was good, but when you closed that window, it frequently closed the entire program. Then, when you restarted it, you were back to the last point the entry data had been saved. I got around this by manually saving the data before opening an pop up window.
The second major bug involved trying to open a page online. More often than not, when I clicked a button within the program asking for a web page, I was treated to the HTML programming of the page, not the page itself. (This may be because I use Firefox as my default browser.)When I tried to download their offered program to prepare for an audit--should it become necessary--I got the same response, a web page full of HTML commands.
TurboTax does contain all of the less common forms one might want to attach to your return. Although they won't be completed by the normal process, you can select the form and TurboTax will fill it out, then add it to the electronic return. I used one of those forms, but found that the way TurboTax had completed it was incorrect, so I had to manually change the data.
My last complaint deals with how TurboTax Deluxe handled my home based business. It imported my data from last year, but never asked me if that had changed, or if I had new income or expenses. (It did suggest I upgrade to a different version more appropriate to a business.) I was able to access that form manually and make my corrections, however, so it wasn't a big deal.
I also used this program to do my son's taxes. He's an unmarried college student who more than qualifies for a Form 1040EZ. I thought there was far more time required using the program than it would have taken me to manually fill out the 1040EZ manually. Still, the form looked professional when I printed it, and we have a .pdf file copy of his return for future reference.
Overall, I was pleased. Despite the aforementioned complaints, this year's version is far better than the previous offerings. It's extremely easy to use and a great alternative--for those unwilling to do their taxes themselves--to paid tax preparation.
After using TurboTax for several years, I was seriously looking at other programs. I finally decided to purchase this year's TurboTax merely because I wanted the convenience of importing the past year's tax data. After using this version, however, there is little doubt I'll stick with TurboTax next year. Maybe, by then, they'll have the bugs exterminated.
