For filing simple returns with the IRS, differences among most online tax-prep services aren't enormous. Each tool provides a comprehensive interview that explains IRS instructions, and each automatically fills in and e-files your tax return. But there are nuances to Intuit TurboTax Online that make it more like thorough desktop tax software--and thus make it our favorite.

TurboTax Online comes in many editions, each tacking on an extra $29.95 for state filing. The free edition should be good enough for 1040EZ filing, although 2nd Story Software's TaxAct is a better deal as it includes the state return for $15.95, total. We reviewed the $29.95 TurboTax Deluxe Online, which adds the Deduction Maximizer tool to help you get money back on charitable contributions, mortgage interest, and so on. The step-up $49.95 Premier Investments should suit those who earn substantial profits from stocks and bonds. TurboTax Home & Business costs $30 more for help with Schedule C business items. Additionally, if you like to do some work yourself but need some advice, Intuit's Personal Pro service offers telephone and online chat with a tax adviser, who also helps prepare and e-file your return. The service runs from $59.95 for simple 1040 federal filing only to 180 for help with Schedule C, D, E, and F items in addition to state filing.

TurboTax Online Deluxe 2006 mimics its desktop counterpart's easy-to-use interface.

Like its Web-based competitors H&R Block's TaxCut Online and 2nd Story Software's TaxAct, Intuit TurboTax Online runs in a browser window. It works with Firefox 1, Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 8, and Safari browsers. You'll need Firefox 2, IE 7, Netscape 8, or AOL 9 if your operating system is 32-bit Windows Vista. TurboTax Online stores your return on its secure servers, using industry-standard SSL encryption to transmit your data. Filing your taxes at work? Fear not. If you step away from the computer and forget to close the browser window, TurboTax Online saves and ends your online session after 20 minutes of inactivity.

Intuit TurboTax Online Deluxe 2006 has the same straightforward interface and easy-to-understand interview as its installable counterpart. The tabbed interface lets you jump between sections and pick up where you left off. Intuit shies away from accounting jargon and provides concise, well-written instructions that are simple to grasp.

On nearly every screen, TurboTax Online displays a running tally of your tax refund or taxes due, depending on your situation. To spare you from re-entering data, TurboTax Online can import your 2005 TurboTax return, your W-2, and data from Intuit Quicken 2005 and up. Though importing a W-2 didn't work in our tests of TurboTax desktop edition, it was seamless with TurboTax Online. The included Deductions Maximizer checks for 350 ways you could lessen your tax burden. To keep you from missing something, TurboTax forces you to choose the "None of the Above" option if something in this section doesn't apply to you. And you can opt for a quicker path if you're familiar with the process.

We liked TurboTax's interview, especially for Schedule C items. For instance, Intuit provided a separate field for communications expenses for a home-based business, whereas the online TaxCut and TaxAct left us guessing where to put those costs. TurboTax Online's Deductions Maximizer also did better than it competitors with regard to explaining what portion of our entered expenses were deductible. Intuit's Its Deductible, a handy utility for itemizing noncash charitable contributions, is an extra $20, but you don't need it if you make few donations.

For support, Intuit offers a searchable knowledge base and user forums on its Web site. Online e-mail technical support is available for free with a 24-hour response time. Online chat is open Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. PST. TurboTax Online users get free chat and e-mail support for setup and usage questions. Phone support is free for installation queries, but calls for other questions--such as how to print or file a return--cost a hefty $39.95 per incident.

We found TurboTax Deluxe Online to be the most thorough and seamless browser-based tax service. However, its price is a drawback. You'll do fine with the bargain 2nd Story Software TaxAct if you're only grappling with a simple W-2 or 1040EZ. Filers with complex returns that include income from investments, businesses, and rental property, as well as numerous deductions, might find the $49.95 Online Premier or $74.95 Home & Business worth the extra cash. At the same time, desktop tax software is a better deal overall if you're filing returns for the whole household.

Stay away from TurboTax

Pros: Easy to use.

Cons: Produces the wrong results. I had a bug in my taxes that was causing a $10K discrepancy. After working with TurboTax for over 10 hours they admitted it was a problem with their software but could not provide me a resolution. At least I caught it..

rating 2008, don't use unless you get a refund

Pros: no pros if it will mess up your taxes. I wonder if they cover interest and penalties?

Cons: It didn't calculate my tax correctly. Program thought my refund was the amount of tax paid. Obviously an error.

Review: Can't trust this free product. I guess you get what you pay for.

Rip Off!! POS!!! 100 monkeys banging on a keyboard

Pros: Easy to install , easy to pay for, easy to get screwed.

Cons: Incomprehensible and a waste of time and money

Review: First of all, I come from a software and user documentation writing background and I simply would have been fired if I had produced documentation of the caliber that is provided in Turbotax.

If you have a very simple tax return, turbo tax might save you downloading forms but if you have any kind of complexity to your financial life, this software is completely inadequate.

Most of the interview questions, especially those involving complext issues, merely parrot what is written in the obtuse IRS publications. Essentially, I had to keep referring to IRS publications for definitions and explanations so I could answer these dumb a** questions in Turbotax. What I expected from turbotax is an interpreted user friendly interview process. That did not happen. what I got were questions like, "After 1997 if you made the election to use the simplified blah blah blah, do this....blah blah. With absolutely no explanation about how I could determine if the election had been made by my previous accountants.

It took me 3 weeks to sort out some of their crappy questions. The time I spent trying to complete my taxes using this POS software, would have more than paid for a proper accountant.

Also, the online version of the premier business pack includes a review and I believe e-file access. I paid more for the desktop version and then had to pay $50 for a review and more again to e-file.

How in God's name has this company managed to dupe so many of us into buying this product.

Refused input corrections, refused to e-file unless initial entries left in, IRS refund 25% MORE !

Pros: Easy to navigate

Cons: A nightmare for '06's complex return. I had to COMPLETELY redo 5 hrs work b/c wouldn't permit input corrections

Review: I was self employed for 18 years until '01, and did my own taxes. Time consuming but I kept good records. I began using Turbo Tax for the last few years of self employmet and was very satisfied, sped things up greatly.

After switching to a W-2 in '02, things were even easier, including investment tracking. I did have a particularly complex return in '06, more due to additional items, e.g. partnership income, but for reasons unknown, the TT program seems to have had some, major basic changes. E.g., a mistaken entry early on created a nightmare only apparent at FILING TIME, which was not allowed to be corrected, requring me to have to spend 5-6 hours re-doing the ENTIRE return. I'm still very angry. Also, my actual IRS return deposited into my account was 25% larger than what TT printed out on my return. I can't wait for the IRS explaination!

Best Tax Program - Goodbye H&R Block

Pros: Pull information from previous tax year, fast, easy to use.

Cons: A bit pricy, but worth the money

Review: A few years ago I went into H&R Block to do my taxes, the very friendly accountant opened a software program, typed my information into the appropriate sections, asked me a few questions and then submitted my forms. Although the accountant was friendly, he refused to enter in the total amount of my charitable donations to Goodwill. He said I passed the limit and since he's the accountant I said put in the max, which was several hundred dollars less then I had donated. I later found out I could have deducted the entire amount so I searched for alternatives for the following year, this is when I decided to try out TurboTax online. I can take my time and enter this information into the application on my own, and most cases TurboTax can pull your W2 information into the system for you automatically (depending on you company). For the past 4 years I've used this program and it only gets better year afer year. This year they added a tool that allows you to enter and save your donations and then transfer this information into TurboTax...I love this program and would recommend it to anyone.

I did hear there was a glitch in the new version, but by the time I started my filing it was fixed and I had no issues what so ever.

It won't accept Charitable deductions

Pros: unworkable

Cons: its response is absurd

Review: I was uanble to report charitable deductions. When I e-mailed I finally received a response citing "server issues" and telling me to download the program to my computer and then download my already entered on-line return information. So far the return information will not enter into the downloaded program. After five years, I guess I have to abandon Turbotax on-line because it just doesn't work this year.
