Intuit has given Quicken 2007 a fresh face that makes it easier to see where your money's going without having to click around the program. This money management tool eliminates the busy register from its prior home page and now opens to a screen with three big boxes displaying money: In, Out, and What's Left. Rather than focusing on Quicken's budgeting features, which require time to set up, Intuit intends for version 2007 to lets you view a running balance of your finances at all times. In addition, a beefed up calendar and online backup provide added convenience and security.

Quicken 2007 works with PCs running Windows 2000 and newer editions (with 128 MB of RAM recommended). On the other hand, Microsoft Money 2007 works for Windows XP only. We reviewed Quicken Premier 2007, which costs $69.99 and includes investment monitoring tools. An edition that's one step above it is the $89.99 Quicken Home & Business 2007, which tracks Schedule C expenses, offers custom invoicing, and handles accounts payable and receivables (but turn to QuickBooks to manage the ins and outs of a small business with multiple employees). You can also check out $29.99 Quicken Basic, but it lacks the electronic check storage, 401(k) and IRA tracking, as well as the assistance with tax deductions that the Deluxe version provides for $10 more. Mac users can pick the $59.99 edition (equivalent to Deluxe for PCs) for OS 10.3.9 and up.

Installation of Quicken Premier 2007 took about five minutes in our tests on a Windows XP machine. Unlike the subtle changes to Microsoft Money 2007, Quicken 2007's makeover is obvious once you open the program. We like the new, tabbed layout, which helps organize information without causing clutter; you can customize the page to display the elements you use most. The Money In, Out, and What's Left boxes feature prominently. You can click those boxes to pop up a mini window of recent income and expense details.

Quicken Premier 2007's new design is a big departure from earlier versions, although you can customize the home page to more closely resemble the old-school style. We like the bold display of our expenses, income, and money leftover.

Quicken 2007's left-hand navigation bar offers links to Business Information, Cash Flow, an Investing Center, and Property and Debt data, as well as a snapshot of your net worth. Links along the bottom detail bills and deposits, spending pie and bar charts, and a revamped calendar. From the calendar, just click a bill to view details or to pay it. We found it motivating (or perhaps depressing) to see a running tally of our credit card debt spelled out in glaring red each day.

Intuit designed Quicken 2007 for faster setup out of the box and to let you synchronize multiple financial accounts with one click. Setup can be a snap if you've already registered for online accounts with your financial institutions; just share those logins and passwords with Quicken. Quicken 2007 lets you import data from about 4,300 large and small financial institutions--more than a tenfold increase from Quicken 2006--including banks, creditors, brokerages, and 401(k) providers. Quicken's PIN vault locks away your various passwords for connected banking and other financial accounts so that they're inaccessible outside the program.

When we upgraded to 2007 from Quicken 2006, our historical account details appeared seamlessly, and Quicken prompted us to update by retrieving the latest data online. Unfortunately, when we installed Quicken 2007 from just past midnight on another computer and with different accounts, it was unable to connect to the national bank that we use for our staple checking account. At first, we thought this would force us to turn to Microsoft Money to categorize our daily spending habits. However, we learned that our bank was performing "scheduled maintenance" at that time, and the process worked fine the next day. And as with any software that retrieves information from third-party sources online, Quicken's details are only as up to date as the data from your financial institutions, which can lag by several days depending on how your bank works. Therefore, bills that we had already paid appeared in red as overdue. Luckily, Quicken allows you to manually list your planned expenses and then check them off later when they clear digitally.

Since this review first posted, many users of Quicken 2007 have complained that it crashes frequently. Working with a Quicken file containing 15 years of data, our PC locked up when we tried accessing online investment information. Intuit acknowledged that users with automatically scheduled transactions were experiencing similar problems, and it released patches in October to remedy this. If you're using Quicken while connected to the Internet, an update message should appear to notify you of such patches. If you lack an Internet connection, you can receive replacement CDs in the mail by contacting the company's technical support.

We're pleased that Intuit now gives you the option to pay $10 per year for 100MB worth of online backup--an affordable must that can safeguard your data in case of a catastrophe. If you choose that option, Quicken reminds you to back up online every third time you use the software. Microsoft Money, by contrast, asks to back up your accounts each time you use the program, and it demands that you use a Microsoft ID to do so. At least Quicken 2007 gives you the option to install the app locally and not connect online.

The new calendar within Quicken 2007 provides daily reminders of what you need to pay and for which funds you might pat yourself on the back for managing well.

Within an account register, you can click on a link to bring up a tiny window of details about recent transactions from that vendor without having to leave the page. We like that with Quicken 2007, when you import expenses that bear cryptic coding instead of a vendor's name, you can rename that business, select a category, and tell Quicken to save and apply that change from that point on to matching expenses. A blue star next to a vendor name indicates that Quicken links to the Zipingo business review service; you can click and contribute your own rating. And as with earlier versions of Quicken, you can pick from among dozens of charts and reports to create a custom picture of your expenses and income and more. As in the past, you can also use Quicken to pay bills online without jumping to multiple bank and vendor Web sites.

Intuit has built a "virtual filing cabinet" within Quicken 2007 to reduce your use of paper filing. You can attach PDFs, JPGs, and other file types to Quicken to keep images of receipts, invoices, and expenses within the application. You can copy and paste images of checks from your bank's Web site or elsewhere directly into Quicken 2007, which now supports scanning. Those files live within an encrypted folder that remains inaccessible outside of Quicken.

Within your account register, Quicken 2007 lets you pop up a mini window that displays the latest transactions for a particular vendor. Here, we were surprised to see how much money we were spending on car sharing.

Quicken Premier 2007's financial planning tools can help you juggle investments and attempt to rein in debts by imagining scenarios, complete with bar graphs, that predict future cash flow and net worth--helpful when we mulled adjusting a bimonthly 401(k) contribution. Other "what if" goals include buying a house or splurging on another major expense, as well as affording college or retirement. But as with other financial software, Quicken lacks help for managing student loans--a major deterrent for young users.

Still, a potential benefit to using Quicken to manage your money is that it integrates with when you file with the IRS--and other niche Intuit products, such as its $49.99 Home Inventory Manager, the $69.99 Medical Expense Manager (helpful in our preliminary tests), and $99.99 Rental Property Manager. To balance your digital checkbook on the go, the $39.95 Pocket Quicken syncs your financial snapshot on a Pocket PC or Palm OS handheld.

Tech support for Quicken 2007 is thorough but costly. As always, the searchable online knowledgebase and FAQs are in-depth, animated tutorials alert you to key features, and you can connect with other passionate users for help. Toll-free phone assistance is live weekdays from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, and is free for discussing registration, upgrading, Bill Pay, and defects. It's too bad that most other questions, including online banking errors and data corruption, run a pricey $24.95 per incident. Luckily, though, online chat assistance is available 24/7 except between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 PT.

We find Quicken Premier 2007 to be a terrific value. The simplified, yet customizable interface and new features make this program worth the upgrade for long-time users.

Last Good Version of Quicken Was 1998

Pros: None in current versions.

Cons: Don't have time to list them all.

Review: I've been a software engineer in the PC industry since the original IBM PC. I still have my original Quicken 2 diskette from the mid-eighties. I've purchased most of the upgrades to Quicken over the years to support the development but reverted back to my Quicken 98. It was the last stable, dependable version of Quicken. Intuit is no longer the company they once were and have completely lost sight of what quality software should be.

sad degradation of once quality product

Pros: apparently the pros left intuit

Cons: buggy, poor support, unstable

Review: i am using the canadian version tagged "XG" which intuit insists is basically the same sw.
unfortunately intuit has chosen to take the path of microsloth and ram silly "tweaks" which make sense to them into the sw
i find the data integrity has been compromised in the area of memorized transactions
the video bugs are a disgrace

No Future Tax Support

Pros: Fairly user-friendly interface; connected to most of my financial providers

Cons: Tax planning for 2006 & 2007 only, consistently problems with the Quicken server when updating accounts

Review: I had relatively few qualms about this product until recently. I had always used Microsoft Money until 2007 but decided to give Quicken a try. Not too many noticible differences. However, I recently noticed that in the Tax Planner section, I could only choose between 2006 and 2007 as the tax year. This being 2008, I emailed Quicken to see when 2008 would be available as a "Tax Year." The answer? Never. You have to upgrade. I bought this version of Quicken in 2007 - after I had completed my 2006 taxes. Therefore, I received only one year of tax planning use out of this product. I know that Quicken sunsets support for their products, but to only give one or maybe two years of value to customers is ridiculous. Goodbye Quicken and good riddance.

Company In Decline

Pros: Inital Impression of efficiency gains

Cons: It does not work as advertised

Review: It has been made repeatedly clear to me that Quicken is a company in decline. Examples include:
ADR stocks cannot be downloaded.
Bank accounts do not update.
Duplicate scheduled bank account entries occur.
Quicken does not reply to customer concerns.
I am now cosidering moving away from Intuit Tax program as well due to Quicken's poor performance. I lack trust in Intuit and cannot afford tax errors.

Does not function like 2004 did - period!

Pros: There are no pros compared to 2004.

Cons: As noted above, it just does not function correctly.e

Review: 2007 refuses to update when an update is requested unless, for some unknown reason it feels like doing so. I was forced to update from 2004, which Quicken said they would no longer support with updates on security prices. Now I get no updates anyway on security prices and they have my money for the new, "improved" 2007 version which does not function correctly.

Usless to Canadians

Pros: Could probably manage fundamental finances

Cons: Downloads stocks at 10x prices

Review: As far as I know, all Quicken programs for Canada sporadically download quotes at 10x their value. Currently, that is all it does. Intuit has known about this for at least 6 months and can't seem to correct it. If you are a Canadian and want to track your stocks - find another program!

Poor, unreliable product. Not worth the money!

Pros: Can't think of any.

Cons: Bugs, Issues, Problems. Outages galore!

Review: Don't buy this product. There is absolutely no improvement over earlier versions. Save your money. The automatic bank updates don't work. I have multiple accounts at Bank of America and I have to logon through each account each time and download to get an update. How can they claim they have automatic updates and yet probably the most major U.S. bank doesn't function properly with this feature? Also, CONSTANT SERVER OUTAGES by Quicken. Every week there is some excuse as to why you can't download your data. This company is a rip off. Will switch to different money management software.

Worst in 13 years

Pros: OK, but is still beta

Cons: Quicken.com is bad

Review: I have been using Quicken since 1994 and this 2007 version has had 5 releases which is the highest number in all the years that I have been using Quicken. Quicken.com does not show the News icon and they have been telling me it is a server problem. Now it doesn't take over 6 months to fix a server problem. I have told them that I will not upgrade to 2008 until they fix their bugs. There Tech Support has deteriorated to non existent ever since they out sourced it to India. They will suffer because of this just like Dell did. By the way I have been a beta testor for Turbo Tax for 4 years now. Their tech support was brought back to the US. They learned, but Quicken refuse to learn.

Investment download service is awful. All else is great.

Pros: easy interface, intuitive functions, banking

Cons: Server for quotes is down more than it's up. Support is terrible and expensive.

Terrible - Are there Razzie Awards for software?

Pros: Apparently they'll refund my purchase price.

Cons: Crashes; won't import properly from previous versions; support is slow and inconsistent.. Forces me to start from scratch.

Review: I'm using Quicken XG (the Canadian version of Premier) on a Windows Vista machine.

I had multiple problems installing from a download. It took 10 days and several install/uninstall iterations to solve.

Once that was over, Quicken didn't properly import from a backup of my data. It moved savings goal amounts into assets and yet left the withdrawl/contribution amounts in the original accounts. In other words, my savings account has all sorts of transactions from all sorts of savings-goal actions, but no corresponding savings-goal accounts. Quicken support has been slow in responding and I don't hold out much hope.

The program has crashed just about every time I've used it. It won't download upgrades, it's frozen when downloaded currency rates etc. etc. etc. Manual downloads work fine, but I don't see that they solved any of the major issues I'm dealing with. What a mess they've made!

It's so touchy I think I'll return it and just use an old piece of software that's at least reliable. Intuit has really missed the boat - this is the most unstable piece of software I've used in a decade.

Set a new standard for user UN Friendliness

Pros: Lots of features

Cons: Extremely frustrating to use

Review: When I get frustrated by software, I normally just uninstall and forget about it. However in the personal finance sector the selection is limited. So...I tried Quicken..again...for the 4th time. And is SUX

I'm a Product Manager, for software and wouldn't allow something like this to get into my clients hands.

For software thats been around sooooo long, I can't understand they can't get very basic features right.

Downloading your transactions takes about 15 mouse clicks. OK, so it saves all my passwords, but then why do I need to enter another password?? Give me the option to turn that off.

I finally download my transactions then and need to confirm I want them? Of course I do.

Entering transactions takes far too many steps.

Exiting the program, it asks me to back up. Just back up automatically.

After downloading transactions it hung many times.

The whole idea is to have software work for me and not for me to work for the software. I need a product to make my life easier, not harder.

Its a continuous mess of pop ups and extra work that needs to be done.

I'm uninstalling for the last time and won't be back. Intuit - you did a very poor job.

User Rating: 1/10

This is the worst money management software I have ever used, period.

Pros: Looks nifty, pretty colors

Cons: Can't seem to match numbers against online account, can't seem to recognize repeated transactions

Review: I think this proves why you can't even trust companies like CNET to write an honest review. CNET gives it an 8.0 and what do all the users give it?

After downloading the free-trial and setting it up to grab data from my B of A account, which was simple enough, the problems started.

Right off the back the numbers didn't match by several hundred dollars. The running totals, daily balance, for quite a while back were off. Doesn't the program see it doesn't match? No. It just keeps going along like nothing was wrong.

I tried to delete the account so I could start over and see if I did something wrong, even though I am confident that I did not, and it would even let me delete the account.

I tried the "reconcile" feature and it noticed there was a difference as it was short by $200 so I let it auto-adjust and what did it do? It took out another $111 from my account. Hello!?

Either way, there has to be better software out there then this pile of garbage. I give this program a "1" simply because if the program can't even balance the money, when the program is SUPPOSED to balance money, then it's obviously a horrible program.

Save your MONEY!!

Pros: Can I think of one? UMMM...The register is the same as 2006

Cons: Lots of bugs, too much fluff and no substance

Review: After running this for a week, I went back to 2006. It would not pull reports with the info I needed, the home page gave you lots of color and pizzaz but no useful information,& numerous other small issues that made it not worth the trouble.
After this, it will take a lot to ever make me switch from my 2006 Premiere version

Aweful if you have Vista

Pros: None found

Cons: Updates wipe out Quicken executables

Review: This has got to be the worst release ever, if you ave Vista. It offered to install R5 and when it tried it wipe out my R4 version. I haven't been able to re-install since. First I got error code 1610 and checked Quicken forum. Advice didn't work. Had to resort to editing my registry. Now it will go all the way through the install process and give me error code 1603. Advice didn't work again. So now I am stuck with a worthless CD. Just review the Quicken forum (free registration) to see all of the issues people are having. Stay away from this software if you have Vista!!!!!

Frustrated

Pros: reasonable features

Cons: very poor in user experience

Review: It is beyond comprehension why Intuit would degrade a good product by rendering useless the import/export function. What they have done is eliminate the Import function in QIF files format without offering an alternative to export data in QFX file format ( They support QFX for import but there is no way to export QFX files) . The result is that archived accounts are scattered in multiple files without any possibility of ever reconciling them into a single file. I have wasted many hours trying to find a solution but to no avail. What a way to kill a rather functional program.

This 10 year user of Quicken will be switching to Money.

Pros: Excellent User Interface

Cons: Inconsistent reports and stock price quote updates that are not available when I am.

Review: For about 10 years, I have been an avid user and supporter of Intuit products and services. That all changed recently because:

1. Quicken 2007 continues to have inconsistencies in my budget and investment reports, some of which go back for a couple of years.

2. In November of 2006, I began to experience issues with updating stock and mutual fund prices. Intuit?s quote server does not appropriately respond to the inquires from my software between mid afternoon and late evening, Pacific time, during a weekday. In March 2007, I was told that the quotes server worked and that the issue I am experiencing was temporary. It is now May 30, 2007 and I consistently experience the same issue, just about every weekday since February 2007. The most recent communications with Quicken support says basically that this is a known problem and that when it is fixed; there will be a posting on their web page.

3. For the last three (3) years, there has been the same issue with how Intuit?s TurboTax software calculates my state income taxes. Each year I have discussed with TurboTax?s support. Every year they work with me to do a work around and say that they will request a change to the software. It has gotten better. But in the end, the same issue causes my state taxes not to be correct if I follow their published instructions.

I am both a power user and a power investor. When I first started using Intuit?s products and services I found them to be extremely helpful, and of a very high quality. Yes, there were issues. But; there was always a quick work around. For the last year or so, it appears to me that Intuit has lost the will, if not the ability, to create and maintain quality products and services.

Quicken is crapen.

Pros: I gave up trying to find any.

Cons: Cost, graphics, bank interface etc., etc., etc.

Review: I was a PC user for years and had used two versions of MS Money. I recently switched to a Mac machine and decided to install Quicken since Money isn't available for the Mac platform. The program (Quicken) was a disappointment from the start. It's clumsy, the graphics are substandard and it's overpriced.

64-bit Windows Vista challanged

Pros: Never really got into it

Cons: Vista program start issues (see review), no way to import from Money

Review: If you are using the 64-bit Windows Vista -- probably not because PC makers are too short-sighted -- then Quicken is a living nightmare. It is probably a combination of both Intuit's and Microsoft's fault. In 64-bit Vista, when you start the program you have to wait about 2 minutes. However, other 32-bit apps also freeze. A quick look at the task manager shows that the memory for this program is abnormally low (<100k) until it fully starts. FireFox used to do this from time to time, but I haven't had an issue with that for a long time. Wherever the fault lies, it is a big deal.

Finally, after following the steps Intuit outlined on their website verbatim, the import never succeeded. Not once. It doesn't even import QIF files.

Maybe it is a good program. I don't know, but I wanted to know. The #1 feature they need is a way to import from Money out of the box.

Try and compare before you buy.

Pros: Quicken 2007 versions are improved.

Cons: Quicken 2007 versions have been released too early.

Review: Try and Compare before you buy.

I am using Quicken 2006 Deluxe version.

Users use Rewriteable CDs to back up their Data Files and should be done weekly, if not monthly to CDs.

I use DVD-RW Disks and CD-RW Disks when backing up my Quicken Data Files. I use Nero's InCD program to create Pre-formatted Disks, from whick you can delete from, without the need to reformat the CDs and DVDs.

Quicken 2006 Deluxe version works perfectly in backing up the Data Files, without them becoming Read-Only when backing up to CD-R Disks.

Every single time you attempt to back up your Data Files during the exact same thing that you have done in 2006, in 2007 you receive a CD Backup Error message, every single time.

This is a major programming bug, that has yet to be address by Quicken Support, in issuing a patch to fix the bug.

In the future, I wish the reviewers would compare previous versions of products to the next version.

But since Quicken 2007 has too many bugs in it, it would not be advise or wise to use Quicken 2007, but to use Quicken 2006 when comparing to Quicken 2008.

Nice product, terrible data integrity. Beware!!!

Pros: Nice interface, clean financial downloads

Cons: Too buggy to use

Review: I have been a Quicken User for many years and should have known better but I mistakenly upgraded to Quicken 2007 soon after its release. Since I have upgraded, I have not been able to reliably use it over the past 8 monts. I have had many data file corruptions that have rendered it useless. I have gone through 4 maintenance updates with no improvement. I have completely rebuilt my data file only to have it corruptted within weeks. While I like the new interface, I cannot use a financial program where data integrity is not maintained. Check out the Quicken user forum at Quicken.com before you buy!! I am now trying to convert back to 2005.

Terrible product and absolutely no support

Pros: Tried to integrate better but failed

Cons: buggy, NO SUPPORT

Review: The program is very buggy and does not always do what it tells you it is doing (it says it downloaded from the bank but it has not). I have sent 4 emails to support and no response. I am not sure how Intuit can sell a product in the US and not support it.
CNET - you guys/gals really missed the boat on this one. I bought the product based on your CNET editors' rating and am very intereted in why the rating is so high. Does Quicken advertise with CNET?

Awful upgrade including data corruption

Pros: I didn't experience any

Cons: Data corruption (need I say more!?)

Review: The worst upgrade experience in by 20 years of using software. I waited quite a long while after initial release to upgrade as I usually do to allow time for bugs to be found and fixed.

My data and settings were mangled during upgrade. Not sufficiently mangled to be immediately noticeable. It took about 20 min of using the new version before I started noticing very odd inconsistencies in my data and the software settings.

Auto-recurring payments that I've had setup for years, were not listed in the scheduled payments table or anywhere else for that matter. Some items in my check, amex and other registeries were duplicated.

After nearly an hour and a half in a call with Intuit support (India), my support rep dropped off the line never to return. I called back and provided my phone number and other details hoping I'd be able to get connected to the same rep (otherwise I knew it was back to the same basic steps before we got even close to where I'd been with the previous rep). Nope, not able to connect to the previous rep.

Shame on CNET for giving this product such high marks.

I should have given much greater weight to the user reviews here.

Pathetic product. Awful customer support. An obviously very buggy product.

Worst version ever - Online broken - Support terrible

Pros: Will be good once they fix their bugs and support

Cons: online transactions is broken - 4 month without a working fix

Review: How can such important feature as online banking, bill payment,...be so flawed! It had several bugs in the original versions. Since that, they released R2, R3, and R4, and just made it worse. The online vendor list, financial institution, tranbsaction databeses keep being corrupted. technical support is clueles. Very disapointed. I have not been able to download my banks, credit cards and pay my bills for 4 months now!

Terrible bugs, broken record support

Pros: "The Editors Choice"

Cons: Bugs Bugs Bugs

Review: Intuit has not fixed any of the problems with Quicken 2007. Just check the forum: http://www.quickenforums.com/category.jspa?categoryID=1001

Even with the R4 release, many people cannot access downloaded transactions, get out of memory errors, and have all sorts of other problems that were not there in Quicken 2006.

Also, you should be aware that, after something like three years, Intuit acutally turns off features, like transaction downloads to force you to upgrade while Microsoft does no such thing (I can still download transactions in Money 2000).

Intuit cripples their products after 3 years

Pros: Software works well intitially. Like the user interface.

Cons: On-line account access turned off after 3 years

Review: full disclosure - I have not yet used Quicken 2007, but I now know that I will never do so.

I have been a happy and loyal Quicken/Turbo Tax customer for a decade. Not any more.

Quicken will disable automatic on line downloads for Quicken 2004 at the end of April. They claim this is to focus their efforts on their newer products. A claim that sounds reasonable at face value. I can understand that a company would not provide tech support forever. However, there is no legitimate reason to turn off features of software that works just fine. This is a blatant money grab.

I had a horrible upgrade experience going from Quicken 2002 to Quicken 2004. It took the better part of a day with help from tech support to convert my Quicken 2002 data. Something that should have taken 5 minutes. Even after all of that, I had to reenter by hand a lot of data. This has made me delay upgrading for a while, since I cannot afford to regularly spend such time. Given this there will be no more Quicken upgrading.

As bad as Microsoft can be, I have yet to see them try to pull a stunt like this.

sadly yours - Jon

I am still very unhappy with these folks, but it turns out that Microsoft does the same thing only sooner (2 years vs. 3 years currently)

Anyone know of a 3rd option?

Totally dissappointed. I returned the product.

Pros: Easy to download

Cons: Didn't do a simple thing like import current TurboTax data

Review: I purchased Quicken 2007 Home and Business conceivably to track business expenses for my small home business. When I went to the tax planning menu, it asked if I would like to import my tax data from TurboTax, which I use. I said yes and got an error message stating that my 2006 tax data was not supported. I then tried my 2005 tax data and got the same result. I was able to import my 2004 data. Ridiculous. Of further concern was that when I emailed Quicken Customer Service, I was told that Quicken will not import TurboTax data. That answer was just flat out wrong. I emailed the rep back and suggested she actually go into the program and see where there IS an import feature from TurboTax, even if it was not working. I then tried the chat customer service and after spending about a half hour trying different things with the rep, he finally came back and said that it is a known problem and it was being researched. The whole experience was frustrating and unacceptable so today I returned the product. Buyer beware in spite of the glowing review from CNET. How could their opinion be so far off from the customers'?

Horrific for stock tracking!

Pros: none that I've seen

Cons: response time is abysmal, each transaction on stocks is 1-2 minutes

Review: I have been using Quicken for something like 10 years and 2007 is the first time I've found the product to be a complete disaster. Intuit has always had challenges handling stock transactions well, but now it can take literally an hour to update 30-40 transactions. Just changing an action from "cover short" which is how Quicken now seems to default buys of options to "Bought" is literally 1 minute + of waiting time. Apparently they have messed up the video drivers. This is not a Vista machine, has 1 GB of memory, no problems with any other program and it ran Quicken 2005 fine. Unfortunately, there's no "undo update".
DO NOT UPGRADE if you use stock transactions. Even if you don't I don't think you'll find any new features to make it worth risk.

Do NOT buy Quicken 2007

Pros: None. I've spent over 12 hours in the last 2 weeks trying to get it to work

Cons: Everything. And the is not SUPPORT

Review: Please go read the Quicken Forums before you buy this product. There has been NOTHING but issues with the new Quicken 2007 NOT working correctly and they are already on update R4!! Do NOT buy this. Go read everything at www.quickenforums.com first.

It WAS a great program but this version is BAD--Do Not Buy!

Pros: Graphic animation make it look like its doing neat stuff.

Cons: BAD technical support

Review: I started using Quicken years ago to track my investments. Quicken had a great ability to track several equities that I own. When a company merged with another company, Quicken updated all the information on the new equity and all was well. I upgraded to Quicken 2007 Premier and started noticing that the value of my portfolio increased in value to over $10,000. I start looking into this (cause I'm not that good of an investor) and realized that all the old equities that merged with new equities re-appeared and even worse, re-added to my bottom line. I contacted support via email and all they could give me was suggestions. Every time they told me to 'try' this, I did and got nowhere. I sent screen prints and got other 'suggestions' to try something else. Everytime I got a reply from support, it was from another person and they would not follow up my previous thread of the results I followed after using their previous suggestions! That is really BAD. I'm asking for my money back and so far no reply to THAT request. Quicken was a GREAT program but this new version and the technical support is BAD. This version of Quicken is so elaborate that its own technical staff is reduced to making suggestions on how to resolve software problems. I have not received any replies that give me confidence that the technical support staff knows how to use Quicken 2007 Premier. And that's BAD. I want to give this program a "1" rating but CNET's pop up window states this is a rare occurance. So I'll go with a "2" and I'm being very GENEROUS.

Erroneous Stock Prices Downloaded

Pros: Easy to Use

Cons: Stock prices downloaded incorrectly

Review: Stock prices are frequently downloade to the wrong dates and/or with the wrong prices. Manual effort is required to verify prices downloaded and when wrong to delete and input the correct ones. Quicken.com has similar errors.

Buggiest version yet.

Pros: Easy to install & incorporates the prior data files with no problem.

Cons: Too many bugs. Lousy customer service.

Review: Have been using Quicken since 1994. Have updated to the latest version each year. Quicken 2007 is the worst of the lot. Too many bugs & very poor customer support. Customer support personnel are apparently not in this country, & do not speak American English or understand it well. One ends up trying to find work arounds on one's own. Particular difficulties with memorized transactions & reconciling accounts with downloaded transactions.

Buggy Software & Disappointing Support

Pros: User interface & ability to attach images

Cons: Inaccuracies in displayed data & abysmal support

Review: I'm amazed that this software got an Editor's Choice and that the update this year didn't identify more issues. From reading some of the other user reviews I have to side with this software is still buggy and the support is of little or no help. I feel as though I was forced to upgrade to Quicken 2007 because of the drop of support for Quicken 2004. OK. I can live with that. I like the new interface and the ability to attach images to transactions. However, the Spending by Payee Pie Chart on the home page is incorrect and nothing that the Quicken support team has offered has resolved the issue... including going back to backups as far back as 2003. Ultimately, they told me my Quicken file was corrupted (I guess a bunch of them) and there was nothing that could be done. What I find unusual is that if I double click on the inaccurate pie chart on the home page or if I request the same chart from the reports menu I get the correct pie chart. If Quicken 2007 can produce the right chart through the other paths why can't it do so on the home page? The data file is the same in each case. I offered that perhaps the software on the home page is initialized differently than the reports software but was told that couldn?t be the problem. I don't buy that all of the previous files are corrupted. I don?t understand why the software imports them without complaint if they were. However, if they were couldn?t we have some tools to help clean them up or recover the data? Don't suggest copying, validating or supervalidating, all proposed by the support team, none of those are any help. One of the support team even told me that we had corrected the problem by using these despite my telling him that the problem still existed. I like the ability to attach images but if the software hangs when I try to scan them it becomes less useful. Having to go back and check to make sure that all of my transactions came down on a One Step update is a disconcerting too. I've only seen transactions lost once but I see complaints about this in other forums as well. Quicken support suggests that it is probably a bank problem. I've been a long time Quicken user and I'll probably stick it out and hope that somewhere along the line they fix these problems despite the apparent belief of their support team that the software is bug free. However, I am very disappointed and for the first time in years I am shopping around to see if there might be something else to go to. Unfortunately, it would appear that your editorial staff thinks this is the best choice.

simply not functional

Pros: Nice features

Cons: The nice features are on a product that doesn't work

Review: CNET's own review said it couldn't communicate with bank. The problem is real, and pronounced in my case. It won't even let me manually import files without requesting a new accoutn set up each time. I just returned the product for refund today. It's truly that frustrating.

CNET says it can't connect, but make's it an Editor's Choice? The analogy: This will be a great, comfortable car for long drives. The only flaw is that the engince doesn't run, and you can't even push it.

Lots of "enhancements" but nothing new!

Pros: It Quicken, so it has been around awhile.

Cons: Do nothing upgrade for previous users. Telephone support very pricey.

Review: Intuit has elected to "retire" all versions prior to 2004, forcing users to upgrade. Unfortunately, what Intuit calls new features are nothing more than ehnacements at best. If you are new to Intuit and Quicken, you will most likely like it, but for upgrade users, it just paying for the software a second time.

Most abysmal product yet from Intuit - Shame

Pros: Integration

Cons: Slow, Buggy, Clunky!!

Review: I have been a quicken user since 1993. And I have upgraded every year, every version since then.
I have yet to see a more bug filled release than Quicken 2007. In many aspects, I have lost several features than gained with this upgrade.

Absolutely do not recommend this until they fix their problems and get their act together. This certainly is no MS Money killer (In fact I am looking into that now.. surprising to to hear that actually coming from me!!)

most unhappy

Pros: Converted old files

Cons: Must now manually input transactions

Review: With no qif support, and my bank not among the few on Quicken's approved list, this is a huge step backward since I must now input all transactions manually. Adding insult to injury,it deinstalled my old version, which did allow QIF imports. Quicken sux. The move to drop QIF support, and force manual entry was to 'improve the Quicken experience.'

Horrible Support

Pros: Good program.

Cons: Stoped supporting the product.

Review: Intuit?s online and phone support has become very poor. I have tried to use the online support and can not communicate with the person on the other end.

I have called the phone support and agreed to pay the $25.00 fee. They tell you that you that there will be no charge if the problem is not corrected.

I had occasion to support twice recently. The first time I gave them my credit card information. After a very long time on the phone with someone who?s English I could not understand I found the answer to my own problem. I told the person this and she asked me if I was satisfied with the level of support I had received form her. Not wanting to make a bad situation worst and hearting her feelings I said yes but that I had been the one to solve my problem. I was charged for the call.

A couple of weeks later I had to call again. Again I was told that there would be a fee for the call but hey would resolve the problem or no charge. I did not give this man my credit card information.

After going on for a while I told the man I could not understand him and could I speak with someone else. He told me no I had to talk with him.

I went on for several more minutes and then told him that I had to stop because I could not understand him and was getting no place resolving the problem. He was very nice and told me that he would speak slower and we would correct the problem. I could not take it anymore and terminated the call.

When my next credit card statement came I found out that I had been charged for the call. I had not given them the credit card information so they must have gone back into the records and got my number form the previous call.

I wrote a letter to Mr. Steve Bennett, CEO of Intuit. About a couple of weeks after writing the letter I had a message left on my answering machine form someone who was calling about the letter I had written. I had the feeling the caller was calling from offshore. He said he would call me back. A couple more weeks have gone by and to return call. He never left a phone number for me to call him.

I have been a loyal user of Quicken for many years and almost every year would purchase the new version. I am now looking for another program to use.

From the office of the CEO on down Intuit had become a company indifferent to the needs of their customers. Perhaps Mr. Gates will do a better job with Microsoft Money!

Don?t purchase any Intuit products because the support will not be there.

Michael Dell recently took back his company and part of the problem was because of the outsourcing of customer support. I hope other companies get the idea that what once was a good idea had become a nightmare.

Looks slick. Except for the major errors updating my old data files

Pros: Not much to report, as the software damaged data.

Cons: Major errors to data files when upgrading

Review: I received several emails and a CD in the mail from Intuit INSISTING I had no choice but to upgrade from my old 2004 version, which has been running faithfully and reliably for years. Quicken informed me they would no longer support this working product and I would no longer be able to update my investments online.

So I went for it. Installation was reasonably painless, until I looked at the data Quicken 2007 read from my earlier version. I now have a negative 46 thousand dollar balance in my checking account, and the projections in the software show hundreds of trillion dollar amounts.

On contacting quicken support, they were unable to solve the problem. And I contacted well over 5 different "support" persons. My data is gone (thankfully, I have the original 2004 data files and can continue to use that, but Quicken will not allow me to update balances.)

What was their solution? Sending my data files (hey, this is private information) over the internet so some hack can look through it and "repair" my files. Not to mention I would have to RE-ENTER 14 years of data when they send it back to me. Oh, yeah, they refunded my money, but still have no solution. Not to mention the "support" personel persons who hung up on me when they couldn't answer a question.

This brings to mind DAC software in the early '90's who came up with an URGENT upgrade that destroyed every user's data. They couldn't fix the problem and the company went belly up.

So long, Intuit. Incidentally, I also use Quickbooks for my business, and I purchased the payroll service from them. The amounts the payroll instructs to send to the taxman differs from the amount they report on the tax return.

I'd stay away from Intuit products until when (or IF) they get their act together.

Intuit is "ethically challenged" - Don't buy

Pros: It is a good program...however

Cons: Forced upgrades via "Sunset Policy" are unbelievable

Review: Intuit has a "sunset policy" in the license agreement (which is not uncommon in the software industry) of only providing support for 3 years. I understand the sunset concept, the manufacturer can't be expected to support a product forever, however that is not what Intuits policy is limited to...
What you need to realize is that after 3 years, they DISABLE key functionality of the software, forcing you to upgrade to the next version.
I was SATISFIED with Quicken 2004. However, I had to upgrade because Intuit disabled the key functionality of being able to download transactions from my bank!!
Instead of forcing me to upgrade with a "timebomb policy" how about creating a product that I want to upgrade to?
Imagine if Honda came to your house and disabled your car after 3 years?
Look for other software solutions! Don't become an Intuit crack addict.

discontinues after 3 years!

Pros: none at all

Cons: buggy, automatically obsoletes

Review: I have used Quicken for over 15 years. Imagine my surprise to get an email from them saying that my Quicken 2004 Premier software will no long download data online after April 30, 2007.

It is now company "policy" to disable their software's functionality after 3 years! It's a stickup-- upgrade or die!

I am switching to GnuCash-- open source, free, works great.

Worst program I have ever purchased in 20 years.

Pros: Frankly, I am so frustrated that I can't think of any pros.

Cons: hundreds of bugs; horrible tech support

Review: I have never written a review for a piece of software before but I feel compelled to warn potential buyers about this program. It is horrible. The problems are too numerous to mention. If you are considering buying it, I would direct you to the Quicken user forums at Quicken.com. Spend about 15 minutes reading the user opinions and then make your decision. You have been warned.

2007 Not Ready

Pros: Liked the smaller box

Cons: Video problems

Review: 2004 Home & Business user updated to 2007 for about an hour on my Win2000 laptop! Installation went smoothly and no data was lost, however the video display was horrid. Searching for a fix, I encountered reviews posted to this site. Uninstalled in a flash and reinstalled 2004 and applied for my refund. Definitely not satisfied. After hearing the problems with CD drives, glad I didn't upgrade on my primary computer. But what do I do now. Just received the notice that come April 30, there will be no downloads or support of the "working 2004 version". This is not good news. What do we do now?

Do not upgrade if you have T Rowe Price Accounts

Pros: I don't know about this

Cons: I had to reinstall my 2004 Quicken to do my tax

Review: OK, I have a 2004 Quicken Premier and thought it is time to upgrade to 2007 and then do my tax. Big mistake!!!

The 2007 Premier totally corrupted my transactons with my T Rowe Price accounts. I spent a lot of time last Summer reconciling all my T Rowe Price accounts. But after I upgraded to Quicken 2007 Premier, all of my "Use Cash from" were changed to a saving account that I have with a bank, instead of from the same "Single Mutual Fund" account I have with T Rowe Price. (For those who don't know anything about T Rowe Price Mutual Fund, they create a new account for each fund you invest in. When you transfer from one fund to another, the originating fund does not store cash but will transfer the cash amount to the new "invest in" mutual fund for you.)

After the 2007 Premier screwed up my data, I tried to change the "Use Cash from" to the correct T Rowe Price account, but they are not showing up in the drop down menu. So I research the problem in Quicken help. Basically it said, if you have a "Single Mutual Fund" account you need to select "do not use online update". Now, that is a bunch of bull crap. My 2004 Quicken was updating the "Single Mutual Account" transactions fabulously. I ended up frustrating for a few weekends, and then decided to uninstall 2007 and reinstall 2004. I don't know how CNet could think that 2007 is worth updating. But as far as I am concerned, if you have accounts with T Rowe Price, save yourself some cash and wait for Quicken to fix the bug.

Normally, I won't have rated it a 1. But I think this is a binomial decision, either you upgrade or not, and I think you should not upgrade.

Don't bother, not worth your time or effort

Pros: Looks good

Cons: Doesn't work as expected, and persistent "upsell" for Q services is annoying at best

Review: If I would have read all of these reviews first, I would have AVOIDED this program.
I used Q from before they killed support for the older versions, so I was optimistic. Now I am only persistently disappointed and frustrated.
Upon startup, I am repeatedly asked to "setup," even though I can see my data from the last session. Setup persistently sends me to "register" online with Q.com, even though I already did. NOW, it will no longer d/l from my bank, and I'm left with only manual input...
Gee whiz ~ I might as well use a plain ol' spreadsheet for all the "new & improved" functionality I've got...

Intuit is going downhill

Pros: They can still turnaround

Cons: Tech support is useless

Review: When buying a product, you have to look at more than the basic functionality. You also have to look at support.

To be frank, the customer service (or lack thereof) has completely turned me away from buying any of Intuits products. If they want to survive as a company, they have to lose the Indian tech support.

Tech support grammar is horrendous to the point where the average person couldn't understand what they are trying to say. They are also complete idiots--unable to answer a simple question about importing data from Money to the newest Quicken. 15 minutes with tech support, and they couldn't tell me if they could even import data from Money.

In this page (http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance/premier-portfolio-management.jhtml#Q8), the link in the FAQ says that Money data can be converted to 2007 format using a data converter. If you follow the link to (https://quicken.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/quicken.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2659), there is a prominant note that says "The converter will not convert data to Quicken 2007."

They may be saving a $1 by off-shoring tech support, but they are losing MUCH more than that in lost sales revenue.

Intuit was a really good company at one time. Too bad they sold themselves short with inferior support. Hopefully they'll pull their collective heads out of their arses and build themselves back up as a reputable company.

Until then, I am stuck using Microsoft Money.

Printer problems

Pros: Great product if do not care about printing or support

Cons: Printing problems with clueless support

Review: I upgraded from Quicken 2006 and regret it. The 2007 version will not print on Brother and some other printers.

Quicken Support (via India) was clueless. I finally got reports to print on an inkjet and checks on a laser printer. However, the last Quicken update made everything condense into 1" x 1" size or in some cases, reversed mirror image.

Unfortunately, I can not go back to Quicken 2006 because file is not compatible. Recommend you do not upgrade to Quicken 2007 until Intuit fixes the problem.

Constant Connection Problems to Banks for Updates

Pros: Clean Interface

Cons: Requires Reinstalltion frequently

Review: Installed Quicken 2007 Home and Business and it takes quite a while to setup all your accounts with passwords to all your institutions. However, Quicken often cannot connect to your financial institutions giving this error message: "Quicken Server Outage, Quicken is aware of this issue. Your financial institution cannot resolve this issue." After contacting Customer Support they recommended doing a new install under Safe Mode. I was told that Support has been aware of this issue and has been working to fix it. It has been 3 months now. I would not recommend this product unless you want to be extremely frustrated.

Quicken should pay me for testing this pruduct....

Pros: There are none stay with 2006.

Cons: More bugs than a roach motel and system support is horrible.

Review: How the CNET editors ever rated this high is beyond me. If you were you looking at the same software I was you must be working for intuit because this is the worst product they have ever put out. And they ought to be ashamed for selling this garbage to the public. Quite simply guys I am no longer going trust your reviews and you ought to be ashamed for rating this product so high.
I know I am systems program manager for a major accounting firm and this product is JUNK.

Why use something that is proprietary? Memories of IBM.

Pros: Works well if you do your finances the way Quicken wants you to

Cons: Can't modify the import files to the application. Not all institutions want to pay a "fee" to Quicken so they can supply the barely proprietary format to customers.

Review: A good program that the management team just wants to shoot itself in the foot over. They have a we have the best product out there mentality and can do to the marketplace what we please. I'll spend my money on an application that I have a little more control over, especially one that deals with my finances. Change the business model and I'll be one of the first to come back Quicken.

DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!! I am going to return my 2007

Pros: 2005 Premier version uses less memory and runs faster

Cons: Transfering 2005 Premier files is a nightmare

Review: If you are thinking of upgrading your older version of Premier, please don't. I am very sorry I did. I have lost my Premier 2005 files in the restoration process and I have been on the phone with tech support now for 6 hours and they have not been able to resolve my file transfer problem. The 2007 program will slow your computer down dramatically!! If you buy this product you will have to switch back to your older version of Premier. Stay away from 2007 Premier. Quickbooks did a very lousy job with this update. Too much memory and speed loss is convincing me to go back to the older version. What were they thinking?

Very buggy. At release 2 and it still locks up.

Pros: Great user interface, Intuitive to use, One click update has the potential to be great

Cons: Internet updates frequently locks up the package

Review: I upgraded from 6.0 because I read that they greatly improved the user interface. This was true. The problem is that even at release 2, the software frequently locks up when doing internet updates. This forces you to terminate the task. This usually corrupts the data file. Many times you can fix that with the File Validate function, but I have also lost information and had to revert to a backup. If it happened infrequently, I might tolerate it, but it happens once per week (I run it daily to update stock prices). It is so bad at this point, I am seriously considering switching to Microsoft money just to get something stable. This package was not ready for prime-time when it was released. If you're considering upgrading...wait until next year, they might have it fixed by then.

A step backwards

Pros: Nicer user interface

Cons: Can not import transactions accurately

Review: I have used the last 7 versions and have had no issues. On this one I can not even download 2 transactions from my credit card and load them. I spend more time trying to figure out why quicken doesn't match my online balance then I do using the tools. Tech support was aweful as well. After an hour of trying to get an answer they came back with "so what is your problem?". Run away from this product.

User Rating: 2/10

Full of bugs and nothing new worth mentioning

Pros: There is a lot of features

Cons: Nothing new in 07 compared to 06 version. Still full of bugs..

Review: Overall the package is not worth it's prize. I would look elsewhere for tools to optimize my business. The time I'm supposed to save using an accounting product are lost trying to recover from errors.

Went back to Money after trying

Pros: I can't think of any

Cons: Import from Money difficult if not impossible. Doesn't work with my bank.

Review: Product doesn't seem to want to mention competition (Microsoft Money). To convert from Money, you have to go to their website and find a "Data Converter." It is still not easy. You must then export each Money account as an XML file, and then run the Data Converter on the XML File. I never got it to work.

Figured I just download my account from the bank, and suprise, suprise, my bank (one of the largest in my state) is not supported.

Subsequently upgraded to Money 2007, had no problems, and noticed that they are able to import Quicken Data, and also import data from any bank that can export data in OFX format (which at least includes my bank).

Will Not Purchase

Pros: It will help you do your books

Cons: 24.99 per outsourced customer service call

Review: This morning I logged onto the Quicken/Intuit Website with the intention of purchasing one of the products. After going through demos and comparing, I opted for Home and Business 2007.

The website, as of about 7am Pacific time showed this product at 71.99 with free shipping. When I added it to my cart, it showed a price of 79.99. It was too early to call as the Website help line stated it was open at 8am pac time. So I waited.

I went back to the original screen to look at it again and, yes the price was the 71.99, left the screen open and worked on other items.

At 8am, I went to "contact us" on their website and saw that there may be a charge to call... so I read up on that and the hair on the back of my neck started to stand up when I read that there is a 24.99 charge unless you are calling to purchase or have install questions. I called anyway, since it is free if I want to give them my money, and talked to an out sourced person who could not understand the issue because of her ability to understand and speak English. After explaining it a couple of times she walked through it with me, WHICH I did on a new screen to keep my old one up, and the new screen did show the 79.99 as the price. Two screens, same address, two prices... interesting.

At this point I asked if all of their phone service calls were outsourced. I was told yes...

With all of the above being the case, I am interested in doing business with a company like that.

Wait to buy until release 2 (or higher)

Pros: Nice new look/feel, work while one step is running

Cons: buggy, corrupted my file of 10 years of data

Review: I liked the new version. Every version has a few things that you wish were fixed, but you learn to live with it. However, this time, the 2007 version corrupted my file. Quicken phone support advised me to reinstall Q 2006 and re-enter my transactions since my upgrade to 2007. Since they immediately diagnosed it as a corrupted file and it works fine now that I'm back on 2006, I feel certain the 2007 product itself caused the corruption.

Waiting for release 2 before reinstalling.

One Step Update caused many problems

Pros: Interface fresh

Cons: One Step Update corrupted some accounts and requires additional time to confirm transactions.

Review: I've used Quicken for over 10 years and have had little contact with their customer support but with 2007 I can say it is very poor. The One Step Update has caused me a lot of trouble and still isn't resolved nor have I heard of anything that Quicken is planning to do about their problems. Poor communication to their customer base.

This product is way worse that the old Quicken

Pros: It comes in a nice red box

Cons: Everything except the box

Review: Since I have installed this new version of Quicken, I have only had problem. I had a much older version of quicken that worked just fine and did everything I wanted it to do with no major hiccups. My wife came home with this one day so I said, what the heck and installed it on our home stuff computer and things have just gone downhill since then. Everything is disorganized and due to Quicken's new compatibility issues with our bank, I can't download anything or update anything. Further, there was some data lost during the migration process and honestly, I'm quite frustrated with this product. Quicken's new philosophy is a major step backward as I believe another reviewer put it. I would strongly dissuade anyone who is a user of older Quicken products from upgrading. However, if you are a new Quicken user, you may be okay with the fact that this company will trade convenience and functionality for customers in exchange for higher profit margins in dealing with certain banks. Quicken basically told me to leave my bank, which is a very large multinational by the way...not a small local type bank. The audacity!

Q2007 NOT an upgrade but a huge step backwards

Pros: improved cash flow interface

Cons: buggy! issues with many 'features'

Review: After upgrading to Quicken 2007 Premier from 2006 Premier, I have had nothing but problems, mostly with Online Account Updates. Several of my accounts will no longer update. I have spent HOURS troubleshooting (removing and reinstalling, copy data files, deactivating/reactivating accounts...) - now deciding if I go back to 2006 or just switch to another software program.

Pros: none that Money doesn't have

Cons: continually crashes computer

Review: After spending hours with tech support, and wasting hours of my time, they still can't get this to not freeze, NOR will they trade out my bad software. what a rip off.

Not Ready for Public Use

Pros: It's Quicken, so the idea is right

Cons: Far too buggy, and not customizable as much.

Review: I've been using a PC since 1985 and have had to chance to use and own some very good software- in all that time, I never returned a piece of software for a refund until I got a hold of Quicken 2007.

I've been using Quicken for over 10 years, and this version was horrible. It had trouble downloading transactions, or displaying what it allegedly downloaded. The hook with Quicken.com is pretty much impossible to break...and its never right.

Finally, you can't change the color scheme- you are stuck with this teal green that reminds me of a 1960's municipal office building- dark and drab and it makes the text hard to read.

After ten days I got fed up with it, reinstalled Quicken 2006 which is fantastic and sent the new disc back to Intuit.

My advice- stick with 2006 or wait for a major service pack for 2007.

Many features missing

Pros: None above previous editions

Cons: Changes for the sake of changes

Review: Every release is a further attempt to get you to use Quicken credit cards and services.

I miss features available in older versions such as import into brokerage and banking accounts.

Maybe in 2008.

At the moment I wonder if Quicken really has programmers working on meaningful improvements and bug fixes.

No networking!!!!

Pros: portfolio management for stocks

Cons: no networking

Review: Unbelievable how they still have not upgraded this program to work on a network.

don't buy this product

Pros: none yet.

Cons: super buggy. can't register, crashes, yada, yada, yada

Review: I should have BELIEVED the reviews here before I bought the latest version. It would have saved me the trouble of going back for a full refund. I have spent three hours with tech support and to no avail. Product keeps hanging. Just general overall product failure.

Stay AWAY!!

Very Buggy

Pros: Nice Features

Cons: Bugs Everywhere

Review: I have not seen a Quicken version this buggy in the 12 years I have been using it. Many of the new features do not work, buttons there but when you click on them nothing happens. Screen flickers when you move the mouse around certain places on the screen. Even some of the links on the help pages do not work, got an error message on one of the links.

Wait for the upgrades to this version.

No Reason for Mac Users to Upgrade

Pros: Practically the same as Quicken 2006 for Mac. Good return policy.

Cons: Practically the same as Quicken 2006 for Mac

Review: I purchased Quicken 2007 for Mac and then returned the product days later. Unlike the screenshots of Windows versions of the software I detected no noticeable change in interface or any other major feature in the 2007 version that enhanced on previous versions for Mac. That said, Quicken is still great software for personal finance tracking on Mac. New users may find it worth the purchase price, but current users of Quicken for Mac will not find much, if anything, to gain from upgrading to the 2007 version.

I found the online download purchase and return to be easy, if not quick, however, so it doesn't hurt much to check the software out and then make a return.

Quicken 2007

Pros: 90 Day Return

Cons: Ease of use, poor support,

Review: I can not see where this program will convert from MS Money 2006. I bought it for the investing portion and have spent the last 3 days trying to figure it out. It wont let you enter what you want to enter. For instance, Asset Reallocation is not even mentioned in their limited menues. To save (their) paper they put the inadequete manual on disk. Very frustrating so I decided to try the online help. I was put in a queue for 40 minutes and used the time to ponder and write down my questions but when count down got to me, I got a message telling me that there was nobody availabe and to basically go pound sand. The little script errors that pop up all the time are really special. What is really cool about this product is that it comes with a 90 day return. I know I will be using it.

This version WAS NOT ready for launch

Pros: I have not found any yet

Cons: online banking is not available from large numbers of financial institutions.

Review: While the tech told me that thousands of financial were available, that did not help me. I use Citizens bank based out of Providence, which I believe is one of the Nations larger banks and it is not available. I also use three smaller banks and credit unions and they are not available. Since my financial institutions are not available my payee list was wipped out when I converted. The program will not even allow me to re-enter any payees. Also gone is the complete payee history of payments. Payments still are recoded in the account register. This has become come a great inconvenience and business disruption. QUICKEN SHOULD HAD INFORMED USERS OF THIS PROBLEM UPFRONT. I WAS NOT PLEASED TO BE TOLD BY THE TECH IT WILL BE MONTHS BEFORE ALL OF THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS ARE IN THE SYSTEM.

Quicken 2007 bugs

Pros: Slightly better update

Cons: Cannot backup to CD, Online 2058 error

Review: I was unable to backup to my CD-R drive as mentioned in some of the reviews above. Quicken's chat room confirmed that this was a problem. I also received a constant 2058 error in trying to use their help service, which is also apparently a recognized bug.

Too many bugs yet . Release 1 is a bummer.

Pros: same as 2006 with bugs

Cons: Too many bugs.

Review: I will not recommend anyone to buy the first release of Quicken ever. I did and made a mayor mistake and cannot go back to prior release of Q2006.

Seems to have a bug in data conversion

Pros: Many new financial institutions added; new UI grows on you.

Cons: Buggy; corrupted my backup data

Review: Truthfully, my actual experience using Quicken 2007 is limited, as upon upgrading and reviewing my converted 2006 data in the new UI, I immediately saw portions missing.

Upon investigating, it appeared that the conversion of my data to 2007 ended up corrupting it.

Customer support suggested that I reinstall Q2006 and make sure the data was correct in that version (Of course I knew that it was originally correct, that's how I noticed the problem in 2007).

At this point, I discovered that the data save that the 2007 installer does from the prior Quicken version corrupted the saved data, as it would no longer load correctly in the reinstalled 2006.

Long story short, I ended up reinstalling an older 2006 backup and adding back in all the missing transactions to bring it current.

Clearly they have problems; I won't be upgrading this go around.

Not what I expected

Pros: What it can do it does well.

Cons: Despite claims of support for thousands of banks and creditors, Quicken Premier couldn't import data properly from a major investment firm on their list.

Review: I bought it to reconcile my investments, e.g. purchase price and sales, gains and dividends etc. This software can only perform in a limited manner. I was offered no assurance that it will be improved in the future. Wasted Money.

don't buy this until they fix the bugs

Pros: Quicken is a decent program

Cons: Quicken releases new versions before bugs are fixed

Review: I've had many versions of Quicken over the years. Each time I upgrade prematurely (which means within the first few months of release of the new version) I've regretted it. Most recently, my version 2006 stopped recognizing my CD writing drive, for no apparent reason. Uninstalling and reinstalling Quicken 20066 failed to fix the problem. I figured that it would be just as easy to download version 2007. Big mistake. Within four minutes of having Quicken installed, I discovered a ridiculous bug that should have been obvious to the programmers at any time well before release: Quicken assigns a file name to the backup file that is absurdly long, longer than the 26 characters allowed by the Windows CD writing software on which the backup to CD depends. This file name is not alterable by the user. So the whole reason why I upgraded to Quicken 2007 was for naught. I'm now backing up to a USB flash drive, which is probably just as well, but give me a break. If I can find this bug within four minutes of using the program, why can't they?

Not if you're switching from MS Money

Pros: Starts quick, nice interface

Cons: converting data from MS Money is a nightmare

Review: I bought this dog when I decided I would transition from MS Money to Quicken. I used Quicken in the past and liked it, so I thought I'd try it again. I tried in vain for three nights straight and two calls to Quicken Tech support to resolve the problem, but no such luck. You have to complete a very complicated, lengthy process to try and covert the data, but it doesn't work. Switching from Quicken to MS Money is a snap however. It directly imports into the program without a fuss, but since Quicken doesn't have a built in converter you have to run a converter (seperate download) and hope it works. It didn't. I might give Quicken a try when they are more user friendly, but for now I'll stick with MS Money.

Great but not in Great Britain.......

Pros: I'd like to try it

Cons: I'd like to try it

Review: As a long term user of Quicken I was very disappointed when they fled the UK scene a couple of years ago.
How about you come back across the pond and link up with some British banks so that I don't have to use MS Money.

Early release was too buggy for me to use

Pros: Enhanced online banking capability

Cons: Document imaging was not working, & their tech support was no help

Review: Quicken 2006 (previous version) included the ability to attach scanned and downloaded images to transactions-- something that I have made extensive use of, to cut way back on the mountains of papers I used to file. The 2007 version promised major enhancements to this capability, which is why I purchased the new version as soon as it was released.

Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that once I installed 2007, I could no longer access existing attachments, nor could I create new ones. If I tried to use a .mdi file (Microsoft's imaging format) I got an error that the file could not be accessed. When I tried using .pdf files, it was even worse; as soon as I would try to open the .pdf file, Quicken would quit, without so much as an error message.

After spending a couple of hours trying to troubleshoot this myself, I reported it to Quicken's tech support, and dutifully followed their instructions: delete and reinstall all pdf drivers, reinstall Quicken, start with an empty Quicken datafile. None of this solved the problem (it didn't help that some of their responses where in such fractured English as to render them nearly incomprehensible.) Finally I reinstalled the 2006 version, and all my attached documents were once again working. Because I use Quicken on an almost daily basis, I had to make the decision to revert to the earlier version rather quickly, since any work I did in the 2007 version was not backwards-compatible with my 2006 files. Whatever prevented the imaging from working in 2007, it certainly wasn't a problem with the 2006 version.

With the little bit of time that I did run 2007, I was glad to see that they had made some major improvements with Online Banking. For instance, with my E*Trade bank accounts I had to manually import the data into 2006-- it was easy to do, but still not automatic (E*Trade Brokerage has long been supported for auto-updates.)

There was also an overhaul to the look and feel of the screens. Unfortunately, Quicken doesn't give you the option of keeping the old skins, which I would have preferred.

I don't know if I'll give 2007 another shot in a few months, when they have hopefully worked-out the bugs with the imaging, or just wait until 2008 and see what's new there. Though, as a very long-time Quicken user (going back to DOS versions) I have lost a bit of faith in Intuit with this last go-around.

For the 1st time in years, Better than Money

Pros: It's not MS Money 2007

Cons: It's not MS Money 2006

Review: It's a slim and quick program (compared to any MS Money). Lacks the excellent forecasting of Money, has some quircks with downloads. Overall the product just works and it does not have any of the myteries of Money. Has not crashed on me yet! If Intuit can just create a good cash flow forecast, then they'll kill off Money. Althought after Money 2007, it seems that Redmond will kill it without any help.

fancy but not friendly

Pros: many ways to track and follow your financial data

Cons: those ways are not clear nor easy to understand

Review: I have been using Quicken since its beginning. It continues to develop and offer many good ways of tracking your finances. It still remains cumbersome and mysterious to those who are not CPA's. It is a complicated process at times to use it as a "one click" update for your accounts. I could not update from Cibibank Mortgage which is company related to Quicken. KISS, keep it simple, stupid.

Like the new interface

Pros: Easier to navigate

Cons: optional services

Review: Once you eliminate all of the questionable services and add-ons from the interface, I like it. I upgraded from version 5 and like the new product much better, because of the improved navigation.

Something for anyone new to Quicken. Not much for Quicken vets.

Pros: It's prettier than its predecessor.

Cons: This is primarily a cosmetic upgrade with few, if any, substantive new features.

Review: With the release of its '07 version, Quicken seems to have fallen back to just going through the motions, knowing that it's expected to produce an annual product upgrade but not really spending a lot of time & effort doing it. As a result, Quicken 2007, while giving users new to Quicken a good, stable way to manage their personal finances, gives its existing users nothing more than some cosmetic changes. The home screen's new , there are new financial institutions whose data can be downloaded into Quicken, attaching documents to register transactions has been improved and the program loads a bit faster. Otherwise, there's not much and certainly not enough to warrent paying $70 - $90 to upgrade an existing Quicken 2006 or 2005 installation.

Intuit doesn't often publish "dot releases." If it did, Quicken 2007 would be more accurately named Quicken 2006.5.

Not There Yet

Pros: Getting There

Cons: Still Needs Work

Review: Over 4000 financial institutions and still not any that I use. There are about 5 choices for Wells Fargo and yet I can't access my Mortgage with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. I also bank with a credit union that isn't among the 4K institutions. The interface is sloppy and the opening window doesn't fit on my 19" monitor. I guess they've built this one for the new 20+ inch flat panel widescreens.

Anyone who pays any attention to their finances doesn't need to see an IN - OUT = WHAT'S LEFT to know what's going on with their finances. The Budget section is another crutch that's been around since at least the 2004 version. An old quote comes to mind when I think "Budget". A Budget is a plan for going broke methodically.

There's a new "Rate" button that they stuck into the Checking Register that links to their new Zipingo website that is a rip-off of angieslist.com

I'll consider my $40 upgrade payment for the new Quicken 2007 Deluxe as a contribution to the development of Quicken 2008 or 2009 and hope they get that one right. Until then I'll stick with Quicken Deluxe 2004.

If you're running an earlier version of Quicken save you money and give them another year or so to get this product up to snuff or at least buy yourself a new widescreen monitor.
