"Quicken does not support multiple family users!"
Pros: Lots of bells and whistles -- if you need them.
Cons: Too many bells and whistles for most of us
Summary: My wife and I have been avid Quicken users since way back to the original Quicken. We have faithfully upgraded at every other revision, or so. Increasingly, we have found Quicken is becoming too sophisticated for the average family user. More and more bells and whistles that mean nothing to us and only serve to complicate our lives more than we want.
We just upgraded from Quicken 2003 to Quicken 2006,Premier "Family" edition. Unfortunately, in doing so, we uncovered a major flaw in programming. If you're running a Windows XP computer, Quicken 2006 will NOT allow multiple users to access the same file or account! Instead, without warning, Quicken will create a separate file and account for each user. The result is chaos.
My wife and I divide the work of keeping our family books. She does the checking account, and I handle the investments. We've been used to the fact that Quicken does not allow multiple access from different computers (there was an easy work-around for that, by simply backing up and restoring to the separate computers, and file integrity was maintained so long as you didn't make entries on the other computer in between backups and restores).
With our old Quicken 2003, we had no problem using Windows XP for both of us to make entries on the same file and account, using the same computer. We'd log on using our different user names and do our work. No problems. However, with Quicken 2006, we can no longer do that. When I log on to the computer under my user name and access the Quicken family files, I find that my wife's entries no longer appear. When I make entries to our investments accounts, my wife does not see them in the same file when she logs on under her user name. The result is that neither of us any longer has a complete and up to date quicken file for our family account!
So, if you are thinking of upgrading to Quicken 2006, Think again. Maybe it'll work for you if you like all the bells and whistles (many of which we do not find useful) AND if you are the only user. But, if you're a family user, beware! Only one of you will be able to maintain your file while the other sits by twiddling thumbs. Otherwise, you will never know if either of you has a complete and accurate file!

While Wdernetz has a certain point, perhaps he should just share the same password while he shares the money with the person that shares his bed!
