Bugs in softwareby jeahsj - April 17, 2006
Pros: sometimes works
Cons: online and phone support
Review:
Very disappointed with TaxCut this year. I always purchase both Turbo Tax and TaxCut each year to make sure I'm doing my taxes right. This year TaxCut is worse than Turbo Tax. TaxCut has bugs in the software, but they sell it anyway. Turbo Tax works fine. This is in regard to rental property calculations. I've told support, they acknowledge, but they will not refund. What a business model! Sell your flawed product and don't give any refunds. I'm filing with Turbo Tax this year.

Federal to State Issueby ex_f15_ais - March 30, 2006
Pros: Great For Federal Returns
Cons: Fails to Properly Process non-State Taxable Documents that are Federally Taxable
Review:
I've used Taxcut for years (back to when it was merely on floppy disk). During that time I only had to be concerned about my Federal return (big thumbs up to Taxcut). After retiring from the military, I receive a 1099-R that my State does not require me to file but the Federal Government does. Here's the issue. I report this as income on the Federal return, and it is automatically reported as income on the State return. Emailed Taxcut with issue and see if there would be a patch to insert a State Taxable entry Y/N? Their response: you will need to contact one of our tax advisers (additional cost)--this is a tax-related question not a software related question. I spoke with a tax adviser offline (not H&R Block). he told me that this is a software error that was creating an error ($400+) owing instead of refund. I was told that the software should have questions built-in that ask if certain incomes (e.g. 1099-R) are taxable by the State and processed accordingly. Overall, Taxcut email support was less than helpful and continued to refer me to their tax advisers. My own quick fix (no help from Taxcut): save current return as tax_1 and make a copy and save as tax_2. Then delete 1099R from tax_2, print Federal part of tax_1 three times(Fed, State, and personal use), print State part of tax_2 twice (State and Personal use), mail Fed from tax_1 to IRS, combine and mail Fed (tax_1) and State (tax_2) to State and make my copy using same method. Rumor has it that Turbotax fixed this problem last year or year before...wonder where I'm going shopping next year.

Nickel and Dimeby genska - March 18, 2006
Pros: Relatively low entry cost
Cons: Irritatitng upgrade strategies
Review:
Be forewarned -- there will be continual, irritating ploys to upgrade the product and purchase add-ons. A new one is the right to be able to download what you've just purchased for up to two years instead of jsut 60 days, which is added as an extra $5 unless you work around the selection. Very annoying. I will go out of my way to find another product next year.

Terrific Valueby danbee46 - February 12, 2006
Pros: easy directions, comprehensive, logical interface
Cons: hitting the "back" key doesn't always get you where you want to go
Review:
I had been using TurboTax for several years and was never totally happy with it. It missed an important limitation on my public employee pension and was a bit complicated with regard to my wife's home business. Tax Cut was a major improvement for us. It didn't miss a thing and I found it far more intuitive than TurboTax.

Terrible Support. Bugs in Programby tenacious_fly - February 11, 2006
Pros: Cheaper than TurboTax
Cons: Don't bother with support.
Review:
I've been stuck with one part of their state interview and I cannot go forward because of this. Emailed support twice, and no response. I guess the 48 hour turnaround time to answer support questions is bogus. Why bother?

Tax cut found savers credit, turbo tax did notby paulbeckertest - February 11, 2006
Pros: Easy to use once I got used to the format
Cons: Not as user friendly as turbo tax
Review:
I was pleased that tax cut found the savers credit. It was worth nearly 400 dollars to me. The interview took some getting used to but now I like it better

I wasted over 20 hours after completing my returnby aprobst - February 11, 2006
Pros: Ease of use
Cons: Support, e-file didn't work, program errors
Review:
I have used H&R Block's software for 5 years and this is by far the worst version I have seen. E-filing didn't work because of an error on the IRS forms that I could not fix (I couldn't access them). I typically waited for over 2 hours to reach incompetent "support" people. I had to completely redo my taxes, I was charged twice and my taxes have still not been filed. I would stay as far away from this product as possible. I wasted my money.

Inadequate software - terrible supportby sdunk - February 11, 2006
Pros: Decent user interface
Cons: Errors in program
Review:
I've switched back to TurboTax after trying TaxCut once. I found a clear arror in the program and was charged for calling their support line to discuss. I paid them to fix their software! Got nowhere trying to get a refund - wasn't worth the battle ofter a while. All that aside their support is among the worst I've experienced anywhere.

I tried this one last year. I'VE GONE BACK TO TURBO TAXby jeffentre - February 11, 2006
Pros: User info setup was simple. All instructions were easy to understand.
Cons: Program missed some financial info, and failed to warn of computation errors. Final results were not accurate per correspondence from the IRS to me.
Review:
Before using Tax Cut last year I had been using Intuit's Turbo Tax Deluxe for years before that. I was not pleased with the Tax Cut program. It missed some necessary financial data I inputed for complete computations. Additionally, there were some conflicts I believe the program should have flagged me about. It took several times of my going over the figures before I felt all errors had been removed. I believe the software's double checking feature should have caught these questionable results, however, it failed to do so. After my tax forms were mailed in with the first installment payment I received a letter from the IRS telling me that my figures were wrong, and that I had actually overpaid them. Needless to say, I have gone back to Intuit's software this year. I doubt I will ever use H&R Block's software again. I just don't trust it.

Not usable, software incompleteby Dtjag1 - February 11, 2006
Pros: None product does not work in my situation
Cons: After rushing to file my taxes (required By callege financial aid) I found out I could not file using TaxCut because the software needs to be updated.
Review:
This flaw will not affect most users but if you have SocialSecurity income you will not be able to file your return until mid February. Tax Cut software needs to be finalized and worksheets updated. Tax Cut was not helpful and said they did not receive updates from federal government. If Tac Cut did not receive these updates how is it possible for H&R block to flie these returns. I feel I ripped off. I do not think this product should even be sold without the updates available.

Without a doubt, good. Makes tax filing a walk in the par.kby jerlbk - February 11, 2006

Cons: Akward to go back to a previous page.

This is my 3rd year to use TaxCut. I hated doing taxes before, but it's all most fun to use it. I also used a accountant before TaxCut. The first time I used TaxCut, I had already used my accountant, so I used the same information I gave her. We matched to the penny! Needless to say I do my own now. The E-file works great. Had my return back in 9 days.

Glad I bought itby sdavidl - February 11, 2006
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: None at all
Review:
Used TurboTax past two years. Switched to HR Block's TaxCut this year and I am glad I did. It was as easy to use as TurboTax and the program was less expensive then TurboTax. I compared both products at WalMart's, saw that they were identical, but HR Block's TaxCut was half the price od TurboTax. Plus TaxCut offered a rebate on e-filing where TurboTax Didn't.

Excellent productby scmama - February 6, 2006
Pros: The tech support and tax preparation support are great.
Cons: Sometimes the questions would be confusing without an accounting background.
Review:
I have used TaxCut for 5 years, and I have never had any problems getting help from either tech support or H & R Block. My son's taxes were set up on both TurboTax and TaxCut. TurboTax did not give him the childcare credit on his state filing like it should have. I gave them a 9 out of 10 only because I don't believe anything is perfect.

Best Tax Software Outby TSR4N2C - January 31, 2006
Pros: Easy to Use, Audit Protection for Free
Cons: Having to mail in Rebate for State Filing Fee
Review:
I have used Tax Cut for 5 years now, and would never switch. As a commison only sales person it's expensive to get every tax break you can unless you can file on your own. But doing it on my own made me worry about getting audited. The Tax Cut software will tell you the average for people in my income range and if my claims are in danger of getting me audited, and that if I do get audited they will represent me. This assures me that I am getting every break I can without making any mistakes.

A solid choice for your taxesby mdulcey - January 30, 2006
Pros: Import from previous years; no activation nonsense
Cons: Going back to a previous part of the process can be confusing
Review:
I've been a TaxCut user for many years now. The program keeps improving in small ways; cleanup of the interface and so forth. Going through the return in the order that TaxCut wants you to remains straightforward and easy to follow.
Going back to change a previous part of your return is the weakest part of TaxCut. You're sometimes forced to go through an entire set of question screens to change one number on the fifth one in the set.
Unlike TurboTax, TaxCut has never had any form of activation requirement. This is very important if you ever need to go back to a past year's return; you may no longer have the computer where you originally installed TaxCut, and being able to just install it without hassle is a major advantage.
Keep in mind that, if you have a complex return, choosing your tax software now is a choice that you'll pretty much be locked into for years to come. Carryover of data from the previous year, especially assets on which you have to manage depreciation, is a HUGE timesaver -- and one that you will lose if you switch to a different brand of software.

Does TaxCut spy on you?by newjersey - January 17, 2006
Pros: easy to use
Cons: privacy concerns
Review:
I have used TaxCut before and I liked it. But I noted their privacy statement this year and it really concerns me. Does this mean that they can spy on you even if you don't file your tax return through them?
