Pros: Fast as my wired desktop now
Cons: Tricky installation...and it's not User Failure! (^ ^)
Summary: I first bought and installed Belkin's Wireless G Plus MIMO router and was using the wifi card that came in my laptop (
Toshiba M55). But I was only getting 24Mbps with very seldom 54Mbps connectivity. (Being new to wifi setup, I didn't know that you can't get the full 108Mbps like it says on the box unless you have the matching wifi card.)
I finally gave in and bought this MIMO wifi card and now I finally get the 108Mbps signal that it promised on the box. My laptop connection is just as fast as my wired desktop now. Yay!
However, the only thing easy about the installation was putting the CD in the drive, following the prompts and inserting the wifi card. After that, trying to connect it to the router was nearly an hour of frustration.
Nowhere did the manual say that I had to turn off my internal wifi card first. Even after I did that, I still couldn't connect to my router. The wifi card didn't see my network.
After trying to configure the Wireless Client Utility software in vain, I had to turn on my desktop computer, go to the Belkin setup webpage, change my setup from a regular WEP security to a 128bit WEP encryption, get the 36digit encryption code, manually type that 36 digits into the Belkin Client Utility setup screen in my laptop, and FINALLY the wifi card recognized my router. Whew!
I'm an experienced novice at soft/hardware installation so I would imagine an amateur newbie can easily be reaching for that phone for support.
Suffice to say that I'm happy with the speed I'm getting now but seeing that the PreN equipment's price has come down to the same as this MIMO stuff, I would suggest to all lookers to go and get the PreN. And again, you won't get the promised speed unless you buy matching equipments.
