    "It's history!"

by Bob Mosher on April 2, 2005

Pros: The card worked in 11g mode with my Linksys access point.

Cons: The software changed my display settings.

Summary: The box contained the adapter, a 12-page Quick Installation Guide and a CD-ROM containing drivers and a manual. The guide says the adapter works with Windows XP and Windows 2000.

I purchased the DWL-G650M for use with my Dell Inspiron 8200.

The guide is of good quality with clear, easily understood instructions.

During the installation process, the first thing I noticed was in the "My Computer" window: the CD-ROM's title was in Chinese.

The installation was in two parts: driver installation, followed by a reboot and configuring the adapter. During the driver installation phase, I was given the choice of two drivers. Both drivers had the same file name and description. During the first installation attempt, I chose the first driver. This software changed my laptop's color quality from 32-bit to 8-bit! This behavior happened every time I rebooted the laptop and quickly became tiresome. Assuming the color quality problem was caused by choosing the wrong driver, I de-installed D-Link's software and reinstalled the drivers, this time selecting the second of the two drivers. This installation attempt failed.

The configuration sofware was impressive. The display was well designed and easy to use. There's a status window that provides much more detailed information than the Connection Status window that comes with MS Windows.

After completing the configuration process, the staus window indicated a speed of 108 Mbps with my Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point.

I contacted D-Link Customer Support via their web site and explained my problem with the changing color quality. It's been five days and I have yet to hear from them.

The color quality issue makes the DWL-G650M unusable for me. This was my first exposure to a D-Link product. D-Link's inattention to detail in naming the drivers and lack of customer support makes it unlikely that I will consider their products in the future.
