"the card people in the know recommend."4.5 starson by donking!
Pros: works well, quickly, strong signal.
Cons: software slightly complex, but not too much
Summary: I originally got a Linksys WPC55AG, for my Vaio R505TLK, running W2K. It was very buggy. Every time it connected to a router it would take five minutes to make the connection and tie up all processor power on my computer during that period, effectively freezing the computer. Even when the Linksys card wasn't plugged in, my computer had this problem at start up. I think it was the drivers for the card that caused this problem, so there was no good work around. I was only able to solve the problem by completely reinstalling Windows.
I replaced the card with the Proxim Orinoco 8470-WD card (which is the same as this card, but without the 802.11a capability). I did a lot of research on different sites and found that the Proxim cards are consistently considered the best by serious and knowledgable computer users. The card works great, quickly, does not tie up system resources and is not difficult to use. It's true the software is a little complex. But not really.
