CNET editors' review

  • Editors' Choice: No
  • Reviewed on: 10/02/2006
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 is the best antivirus application we've seen this year. In our CNET Labs' performance tests and in results from independent antivirus testing organizations, the Russian antivirus vendor Kaspersky scores high marks against its well-known competition. We think you'll like Kaspersky's straightforward, no-nonsense interface (one that doesn't try to up sell you additional Kaspersky products). Despite a very competitive antivirus landscape, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6, released earlier this year, still stands heads and shoulders above the latest Norton and McAfee products and thus deserves our Editors' Choice for antivirus protection.

Setup
Kaspersky downloaded and installed without incident on our test systems in just a few minutes. You do have to reboot your computer, but that's a minor inconvenience. Once installed, Kaspersky occupies a mere 50MB of hard drive space, and it consumes very few system resources when active. Unlike McAfee and Symantec, Kaspersky will run under Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP on older PCs with as little as 64MB of RAM.

Although Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 lists for $10 to $20 more than Norton AntiVirus 2007 or McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007, we found several retailers, such as CompUSA and Office Depot, offering Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 at competitive prices after various discounts and rebate offers are applied. And Kaspersky is the only major antivirus vendor to offer a free, lighter version of its antivirus product (McAfee and Norton still do not). The lighter version, known as AOL Active Virus Shield, gives you a sense of what the paid Kaspersky product can do. Given that you have supply AOL with personal information, however, you might be better off downloading the full-function free 30-day trial of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 from CNET Download.com instead.

Should you ever want to remove the program, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 includes its own uninstall icon. Unlike McAfee and Norton, Kaspersky Anti-Virus left zero traces--no registry files, no folders with mysterious log files--which is how a good uninstall should act. Why McAfee and Norton can't clean up after their own messes is beyond us.

Interface
If you ever used Kaspersky in the past, you'll be pleased with the redesigned interface. Gone are the messy tabs across the top. Version 6 sports a cleaner and brighter look, with its intuitive left-hand navigation and system status alerts prominent in the lower-left corner. The much larger right-hand window pane is used for details. On the left, there's a Scan option and, unlike the one-button "fix" solutions offered by Norton and McAfee, Kaspersky gives you more options--handy, because there are times when you want to run only a quick scan, a deep scan, or a single file scan, and this way you can do so without much fuss. Also, if you don't like the native interface, Kaspersky allows you to change its theme or skin--something that Norton and McAfee do not offer.

Features
Kaspersky offers a number of specific antivirus protections for your PC. Like most antivirus products today, Kaspersky also protects your computer against spyware--scanning for both viruses and spyware, which is much more efficient than scanning for each separately. Kaspersky scans not only e-mail, but also Web-based port 80 traffic, routing out online viruses, Trojans, and other malware before any of these infect your hard drive. To reduce scan time, you can even ask Kaspersky to scan only the files that have changed or been modified recently.

Standing behind the Kaspersky Anti-Virus application is Kaspersky Labs, one of the best antivirus research labs in the world; often Kaspersky is the first to report new malware. We like that Kaspersky features hourly signature file and program updates; other vendors update your system only when necessary. And with Kaspersky, you can roll back any update (in the case of a software conflict), which is not the case with other antivirus vendors.

Kaspersky is proactive; it's vigilant against the unwanted installation of adware, dialers, rootkits, and remote access utilities. It also locks specific system registry keys, such as Startup, Internet Explorer, system security, and system services from changes made by malicious code.

The only negative we could find involved creating a rescue disc, which is optional. If you are running Windows XP SP2, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 can create a bootable Rescue Disc in case a virus knocks out your system. Unfortunately, the process is a bit complicated. First, you must to install PE Builder, a free download available from a variety of online sources, but you must also have your Windows XP SP2 disc handy. Our Windows XP SP2 was a download upgrade, not a disc, so we were ultimately unable to take advantage of the Rescue Disc feature.

Performance
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 scored well in CNET Labs' performance tests and exceptionally well in third-party, independent antivirus testing using live viruses. On our iTunes test, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 was first, with a fast 174 seconds, just 12 seconds above our test system. On our Sorensen Squeeze test, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 was second, with 256 seconds, just 15 seconds more than our test system. For scanning a single folder with files, Kaspersky came in the middle of the pack requiring 160 seconds. And in boot speed, Kaspersky came in third, with a respectable 62 seconds. To find out how we test, see CNET Labs' How we test: software: antivirus page.

In terms of protecting your PC, we cite results from two leading independent antivirus testing organizations. In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 earned an Advanced + (highest) rating, catching 99 percent of all malware tested. And from CheckVir.com, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 was one of eight products to earn its Standard (or highest) rating.

Support
The fact that Kaspersky is a Russian antivirus company doesn't mean you can't get top-quality technical support from within the United States or elsewhere. First, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 provides context-sensitive in-program help files. For example, if you are on the Data Files page and you click Help, you're taken to the entry for Data Files within the Help file. It's a small touch, yet we don't see it often enough. Kaspersky also delivers excellent online documentation. Unlike Norton AntiVirus 2007, which offers a pithy, 32-page manual online, Kaspersky offers a robust 208-page PDF manual, including everything we want and need--except an index, although the table of contents is fairly detailed. There are active user forums and FAQs available online. Finally, you can e-mail or call a toll-free number for live technical support.

Conclusion
If you're looking for an antivirus application that's light and fast and consistently wins detection awards against the competition, Kaspersky's the one. We found this antivirus application easy enough for beginners, with customization features that will please more advanced users, as well.

Don't use it

Pros: Nice design

Cons: Cannot uninstall the software. Not very effective.

Review: Not enough security... DON'T THINK ABOUT USING THIS...

About as welcome as Russian tanks rolling into Chechnya

Pros: The interface is straightforward and not yellow. Tech support responded promptly to my email.

Cons: Bit of a processor hog. Trashed my school's IT Suite.

Review: Kaspersky AV replaced Symantec on all Cardiff Council administered PCs (which includes the ones in my primary school) over the Easter break. The result is that all our computers are running at half-speed, except for the ones in the IT Suite, which aren't running at all. The problem is our 'Hydra' systems, which use software emulation to run 6 workstations from 1 PC (kinda like thin client technology, but without the extra boxes). Kaspersky doesn't like their startup routines, and puts the boot in as soon as it gets a sniff of desktop. On the plus side, the company was very responsive to my outraged emails. They provided a diagnostic tool for me to run so that I could send them detailed system info, and have suggested appropriate fixes, registry tweaks, etc... Not simple, by any means, but doable. It's unfortunate, therefore, that Cardiff Council policy does not allow me to apply those fixes (School IT Managers are not trusted with Admin passwords because that would immediatley put the slackers and know-nothings in the Schools IT Service out of a job.) Hey ho.

My advice is to be wary of this product if you are running anything other than a well-specified plain vanilla PC.

Great software

Pros: quick, efficient, easy to use

Cons: can find any

Review: so i had almost every good anti virus out here from macfee, to Norton to nod32 and Kaspersky anti virus is the nest out of all by far. i had a trojan in my computer whilst having Norton, downloaded kaspersky and it was gone. mcfee and nod are ok but this is the best!!!! ::)

NO SUPPORT!!

Pros: It didn't slow my computer down like Norton. It initially worked very well and kept my machine virus free.

Cons: The call center is a farce. The "Online Chat with a Technician" is a farce. I emailed them two days ago for tech support and I still haven't heard from them. If you've had any other type of anti-virus on your computer it won't install. And no help

Review: This a pretty good product if it runs perfectly and nothing unexpected ever happens. But if something ever does happen YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. There IS no tech support. I sat on hold for two hours three days in a row The "Online Chat with a Technician" is a farce, it tells you "you're next in line" for hours on end. It became obvious they have no 'real' call center so I opened a tech support case through their website by submitting a form but its been two days sense I've done that and still nothing. If you've had any other type of anti-virus on your computer Kaspersky won't install. The website gives instructions on how to get around this but it still won't work for me and there's no one for me to call to find out why or even talk to about getting a refund. In the meantime I'm out $70. I don't advise anyone to buy this product.

No activation code for 12-24 hours after online payment

Pros: Don't know -- can't get product

Cons: activation service stinks -- 'chat' button goes to links after length submission.

Review: I went online to buy this after a trial subscription. They took my credit card info on a Sunday morning, and then have not sent an activation code. I've now gone looking and end up going around in a circle trying to get an answer. I found 'chat', and after clicking on that, answering many questions, and clicking submit was taken to a list of available links! -- not chatting to me! If I can figure out how to cancel, I will. (Well, I just got an email thanking me for trying to chat with them. Nice, but 'thanks' was not the answer I was looking for.) I've already invested about 45 minutes in this. If it's not obvious, I am extremely annoyed as this is not what I wanted to do with my morning!

BAD Company

Pros: A product is only as good as it's support

Cons: They don't care about you

Review: I purchased System Mechanic 5 from Kaspersky/ They went to ver 7. and stopped supporting ver 5, with out advising me. I had a years use with ver 5 that cost me $80.00 and they wouldn't even talk to me about it. Their management would not return calls, no grace period....nothing. They said I could buy Ver 7 for full price. I thought there was a law about supporting a product for a certain period of time. I will now question all software companies about support time. Buyer beware. God Bless

Cons: after first update, system crashed

Review: i installed this... and after first update and restart, system didn`t work. no chanse to uninstall, restore, anything. i had do formatt and reinstall windows. way to go, kaspersky

crashed my computer every time I logged in into my ISP

Pros: never got to use it

Cons: never got to use it

Review: I returned Kaspersky and got a Norton 360 had no problem with it

User Rating: 3/10

Not fully compatible with Vista

Pros: Frequent updates

Cons: Poor customer support

Review: In the 6 months I have been using this product with Vista I haven't been infected. So, I suppose it's working. However, it has not been problem-free. For example, I have received several annoying false positives that were difficult to resolve. Right-clicking on a file to scan it for viruses doesn't work. This is a fairly basic problem that has been reported by several customers, but Kaspersky has failed to acknowledge the issue. Based on my experience to date, I will not be renewing my yearly license.

Too much to maintain!

Pros: Detects virus' very well

Cons: Auto updates have caused many applications to fail

Review: This product seemed good at first, but requires a lot of maintenance.

Recent updates have shut down our engineering department. Now we have to stop Kaspersky so our users can do their work.

Now our servers are failing to update the definitions due to security rights.

Kaspersky's support staff is at a loss.

Their next level of support is unreachable, they are located in MOSCOW!

Slowest scans I have ever incountered on a virus scan

Pros: good user interface, easy to use, able to go in depth a little bit more then some other virus scanners

Cons: slowed down my computer a lot, scans were terrible, files were missed in scan, crashed a couple times.

Review: Overall I spent money on something I will never use again. The files that were missed contained viruses and I had to use McAfee to get rid of the little buggers. This product caused me nothing but grief.

User Rating: 9/10

Quick, Clean, Efficient

Pros: Does not hog resources, easy to use, good virus protection, fast updates

Cons: Have yet to find any

Review: I have used Norton - Resource Hog and Avast - Bad Protection and were very disappointed with both. Kaspersky, however, has seemed to hit the spot! It runs without killing my system speed and provides efficient protection. Updates are fast and frequent. Overall great product.

Klumsy and slows my computer, frustrates with annoying pop-ups.. Not for intermediate users

Pros: Seems like it's working, but my adaware still finds hundreds of problems immediately after scan

Cons: slows my system down, blocks me from multiple areas even with permissions properly set

Review: This software does not like firefox!!! Some updates completely lock my browser, even with the 'Kaputsky' software disabled.
Very frustrated user, and I'm no beginner!!!

If you are looking for a good anti-virus and ad/spyware blocker that does not require CONSTANT input and tinkering....
Look elsewhere!

TOTALLY USELESS

Pros: No problems with installation

Cons: allowed spyware to completely take over

Review: Kaspersky allowed spyware to completely take over my system. It took 6.5 hours and Norton Internet Security to regain control.

User Rating: 3/10

crashed system

Pros: taking it back for refund

Cons: none i can think of

Review: was going to buy Norton 360 but was persuaded into buying by pc world staff claiming it was the bees knees.
On instalation it reduced my desk top to a crawl and refused to allow components of aol to function.Eventually locked the computer up. It drove me bonkers with pop up this that and the other were trying to access ( mainly aol software)Nothing i did would allow my computer to function as it did pre instalation.
My laptop suffered the same fate costing me 6 hours of tweaking and cursing before the best part came into play the uninstall.
everything sprang back to life. Ill try Norton 360 next and dont intend to listen to the sales patter from staff either.

CRAP/FRAUDS/NAZI'S

Pros: THERE ARE NONE

Cons: TOO MANY TO LIST HERE

Review: Once you purchase the product, they got you. Just when you think all is well and good your license runs out. Then if you decide to reload your system past the time they give you, you have to chock up another 7 bucks. So hwat was that 70 bucks you laid down for initially??? Yeah I'd like to know that as well. 95% detection???? Who did this analysis??? Let me guess, KP???? Didn't detect the virus that I had. Give this one a pass, it aint worth the hassel. Oh and as far as customer service goes??? Nonexhistant sums it up pretty much. Sent an email two days ago and have yet to receive a response. Seems the ATG and the BBB needs to get involved on this one. I guess that sums up my ranting here. On to the next website to make sure everyone knows what this company is really all about.

Great! wish I'd never left it.

Pros: Easy; kept up with everything; I didn't have to do much

Cons: at the time, not much

Review: I stopped using Kaspersky about 6-9mos. ago, because AOL was offering their new security suite again, and since I wanted it "all in one".....anyway, kept having trouble with the virus protection so decided to come back.
Lo and Behold you are gone!! The free one, anyway.
If anyone reads this and wants to spend the money....this is a GREAT reliable program,
wish I'd never left!!

User Rating: 2/10

OMG... what year is this????

Pros: Well.. it doesn't take as long to scan as my other one did.

Cons: Bogs down the system and appears to breed trouble.

Review: I hate it. My computer runs like I have Win95, it takes a while to connect to the internet and go get a drink when you want to open a program, and forget just checking your mail you have to let it scan everything and ask you what you want to do with it. And yes this is at my office and has affected every pc here... Some, like mine had no virus (because I had run Norton, and no I could care less on what you hate about Norton) and some had virus. The ones that had a virus and had it cleaned scanned again and has doubled. ???? How that worked I have no clue... I am very disappointed!

Much better than Norton Anti-Virus/SystemWorks

Pros: Computer boots up and runs better with Kaspersky, Viruses are found and easily removed

Cons: Help section does not help with many complicated settings, particularly in the "proactive" area

Review: With Kaspersky's Antivirus System, suddenly I was in control of my computer again, after multiple, major and worsening problems with Norton Antivirus/System Works.

Kaspersky's technical support helped me getting rid of the Norton Antivirus/SystemWorks files that had blocked the installation of any other antivirus program in both of my computers. It was quite an experience, being able to enjoy working with the computer again, after Kaspersky had even found one virus and one keylogger (!), that Norton Antivirus had previously not recognized.

I must, however, agree with the CNET reviewer, who noted, that complicated settings are necessary, in order to benefit from all the features, that Kaspersky has to offer. Why doesn't Kaspersky explain those features and settings in a way that a nontechnical computer user can understand? The "Help" section definitely needs an update there.

The screening of all the computer files takes a very long time, and fast progress is made only during defragmentation (with Diskeeper). Why?

I believe, that CNET's detailed review is really helpful. And I am glad that I finally switched to Kaspersky from Norton, which kept both of my computers from booting and working right.

One of the users mentioned problems with starting Microsoft's Internet Explorer, after automatically updating. I had the same difficulty on one of my computers with Windows 2000 professional ... with Norton, and even with Kaspersky Antivirus. When I loaded the computer with a previous software and did not do the latest Microsoft Updates, the Internet Explorer worked perfectly again. Strange, isn't it? After notifying Microsoft about that problem, I received no response. Obviously, they are not interested in helping anyone with Windows 2000 professional anymore ...

Abut Kaspersky great piece of software for your computer

Pros: Excellent product... easy to install and does very well

Cons: little pricey

Review: Great product. I can not say enough about this product.
Updated
I rate Kaspersky Anti-virus 7 to be an excellent product

User Rating: 9/10

Kaspersky rules

Pros: Excellent detection ratio, hourly updates, very light, fast

Cons: Updates a bit slowly, You must install it before installing a second antivirus

Review: I've been using it for the past two years and had no issues and its very light and fast. If you are looking for an antivirus go for it because you get updates for every hour which makes sure your PC is not at any kind of risk of being infected with a virus. People in Kaspersky Labs release update within a few hours after a virus breaks out. That's what makes Kaspersky THE BEST of all antiviruses.

never buy this crap

Pros: may be fast

Cons: messed up my system, NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT

Review: It is not worth spending time on this crapy product, NO customer support at all, It totally messed up my system, i have to spend lot of hours to re-install all drivers. Can't trust CNET reviews

User Rating: 1/10

What exactly did CNET review?

Pros: Somewhat easy install

Cons: Everything.....Computer programs now have a major lag time in running and many web-sites are locked out.

Review: I am not sure what Cnet reviewed but it certainly doesn't sound like they reviewed KAV 6.
Since I had it installed on my PC at home it has crashed right after the install. Once I got it to run again I noticed all my keystrokes took a long time to register and every program takes at least twice as long to open. Firefox is a disaster now with this program running....I am locked out of about half of the websites I usually visit. I do my banking online and can no longer visit the webpage due to SSL protocol issues.
This very website (Cnet) locked up while trying to submit my first review and I had to close and re-open FF to get this one.....so far so good but I am expecting it to lock up at any time.
I am looking for an Anti-Virus that won't screw up my PC and had high hopes for this but it looks like I will still be looking.
I am still puzzled as to what Cnet even reviewed to give it an 8 and an EC!!!!????

User Rating: 10/10

TOTALLY OUTSTANDING

Pros: trustworthy

Cons: complicated

Review: I have been using this antivirus for three months now and compared to other antivirus ive tried like avira, norton, mcafee and avg i'd say this is the best. It gives me peace of mind that my system is totally free of any virus or spywares. Its a bit complicated at first because of a lot of settings and a lot of nagging every bit of change that is happening in the system (which btw is good thing), but once you get the hang of it, it becomes very easy. =)

Support is about NIL!

Pros: Good protection

Cons: Cons no support and has blue screened system

Review: Ok I currently have an issue and it takes a full 24 hours for a single reply to email.. respond back to them when they are supporting you and you still got a full day or more waiting for response! Oh and had to uninstall it to reinstall it once due to corruption of program and it didn't properly remove it's services so the computer permanently blue screened EVEN in safe mode!! I had to do a repair install!

System crashed

Pros: inexpensive

Cons: system crashed, erases good files

Review: Unfortunately I followed CNET recommendation and purchased online this product. Installation appeared to work fine but there was a big slow down of the system. After a few restarts I decided to remove the software and took a long time to do it. Once uninstalled I had all sorts of problem including internet not working properly, windows not updating, various errors etc. Evenutally after 1 night trying to save my data I had to give up and had to re-install windows. Apparently the only option was to format the C drive. What a nightmare. I am an average computer user, maybe this is for very advanced users. I have asked for refund but this company did not respond to my email yet.

After Ugrade the whole thing crashed

Pros: Very disapointed

Cons: Very disapointed

Review: I have had the software for 6 months I upgraded to 7.0 and then ALL &^^** breaks lose.
Spent 10 hours with tech support tried to reinstall 6.0 still tanks out. VERY DISAPPOINTED
WOULD NOT recommend. I know have to go get another antivirus OR better yet reformat my hard drive. THIS NEVER HAPPNED USING ANY OF THE OHTHER VIRUS SOFWARE. The problem is during a scan it just Hangs stays on one file for 2 hours.

User Rating: 2/10

nasty, bruitish, and slow

Pros: none I can see

Cons: unstable, confusing, alarmist

Review: Step 1. Run the Kaspersky installer.

Step 2: Reboot.

Step 3: Kaspersky yells at me that my definitions are dangerously out of date. I find this juvenile and typical of its alarmist, self-promotional surface texture. I?d prefer if it just quietly downloaded them in the background. Instead, I have to click on the tray icon, bring up their window, and click on a link to start the download.

Step 4: It crashes. I don?t mean fail. I mean crash. Pops up the ?The program has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way? dialog box. In other words, C or C++ code failed to handle an exception. To me, this, all by itself, is a failing score. These people want me to trust them to put code inside the kernel of Windows, and they can?t even write clean user-mode code to download definitions.

Step 5: It complains to me that it?s nonfunctional because one of its definition files is corrupt. In other words, not only did it crash, it was so badly designed that it failed to use a transactional discipline to ensure that its critical databases were always in a consistent state.

Step 6: I try to download the definitions again to get back to a usable state. I click on the button. The log shows it starting the download. And stopping the download. And reporting a failure, with no supporting detail or explanation.

Step 7: On the 6th or 7th attempt, it succeeds. Now it?s running. And whining that it needs to do a complete scan. Which it estimates will take ? 29 hours. Oops, sorry, it just revised the time to 30 hours. Oops, now its 31. I think it?s losing ground.

Step 8: I am now being pecked to death by Kaspersky?s ducks. Every few moments, a popup shows up to ask me if it is OK to allow an outgoing connection to a Google desktop server. Apparently, (a) Google has a lot of different servers in a pool, (b) Kaspersky has no prior knowledge of Google desktop, and (c) Kaspersky?s rule construction system is too stupid to generalize this case. I wish I had left Microsoft firewall turned on, and this thing?s attempt at the same thing turned off. Except, of course, that my IT person tells me that it won?t work in that mode.

Step 9: Internal email is being marked SPAM.

User Rating: 2/10

No quicktime streaming video

Pros: Some good features

Cons: Couldn't watch quicktime streaming video

Review: I have to say I'm really disappointed with CNET. On paper this looks like a great product but the streaming video bug is inexcusable. On their website they admit that this is a 'peculiarity', I spent some time on their user forum & looks like other people are also having the same problem! I downloaded the latest version & still had the same problem. I emailed tech support and was finally told to uninstall quicktime instead!! I can't believe they haven't fixed such a basic problem. Save yourself a lot of trouble & don't buy it.

It's good enough for me

Pros: huge virus database

Cons: a little bit slow when scanning

Review: I'm lovin' it

User Rating: 8/10

A rough start but great now

Pros: Lightweight and fast

Cons: No problems yet

Review: I've been a very long time faithful user of Norton AV but got tired of every year troubleshooting some bug that it put on my systems when I upgraded. Installed Kaspersky AV after uninstalling NAV 2007 (or so I thought) and got BSD. System rebooted okay though (whew!) and I ran SymNRT (Symantec/Norton Removal Tool) which really uninstalled all the Symantec remnants, then reinstalled KAV and it runs wonderfully. Fast and efficient
Good bye Norton!!

Rock-Solid Protection

Pros: Has a Firewall-like protection

Cons: unable to exit it somethimes at own will

Review: very very good protection, but doesn't detects as well as AVG. scans lightly on the system.

Froze my system and still no support reply

Pros: Highly rated I guess

Cons: Nothing to warn of possible conflict with already installed programs

Review: Even though I have Spy Sweeper with Ani-Virus, I thought if there was going to be a problem Kaspersky would have flagged it with a warning before moving ahead with the install. But no! When rebooting it took forever...had to shut down and reboot...that took almost 20 minutes before I could even access the Start menu...then still nothing...reboot again, then another 15 mintues, finally I could get my Spy Sweeper Closed, but still the problem persisted. Finally got in so I could uninstall Kaspersky and emailed Customer Service for a refund. Lots of Luck with that one!!!! My motto, if ya have something that works, stick with it! :)

Just PERFECT!

Pros: Powerful, Fast, Smart, ...

Cons: haven't a software database for its Firewall (Anti-Hacker), so it makes lots of questions. Also the "Proactive Defence" gives lots of masseges.

best av, best service

Pros: quick load, quick update, only runs 2 processes

Cons: never have seen it catch anything (thats good)

Review: I started with Mcaffe before the internet, ran PCcillin for years, too many things got by, tried bit defender, too slow way too many processes, kapersky had best rating, although had to put it on a clean drive. takes 1.5 hours to check 1TB. customer support easy to work with

Best anti virus program I've ever had

Pros: Works quietly in background with little system slow down.

Cons: None, as of yet

Review: I've had Norton. I've had Mcafee on the same computer for the last 4 years. When I had to wipe my hard drive the time was right to switch from the uber-intrusive McAfee. (Even though I had 4 months left on my subscription) Nothing to say other than it loaded cleanly and has been less obtrusive than McAfee by a long shot. It is doing what is supposed to do without bugging me. That rates a 10 in my book.

idioticly stupid

Pros: the box looks nice!

Cons: it is stupid

Review: I could not install this program as i 'had another version of Kaspersky anti virus installed' Yes i had another kaspersky product but it was Kaspersky Internet security suite but for some reason the anti virus software thought My Internet security suite was another version of itself

Don't do it!

Pros: None that I could see vs. any other program.

Cons: Bombed my system within 12 hours, Multiple error messages even after uninstalled

Review: This program is just not good. It downloaded OK but created error messages to either debug or cancel every program I opened. This went on for about 10 minutes before I uninstalled it. Even after that, it had another error message at shutdown and another one after reboot when I started MS Outlook. Program not worth time or patience. I currently run XP SP2. Thanks

Very Big Letdown

Pros: Frequent Updates are a great idea

Cons: System Crashes and Slowdowns

Review: I had high hopes for this program since I was not impressed with some of the more popular Anti-Virus programs on the market. After I installed Kaspersky on a high-end machine running XP w/ SP2, I had some rather severe system slowdowns and a couple of total system crashes. Even after confirming that my other anti-spyware program was turned off, I still encountered problems. I uninstalled Kaspersky and then reinstalled, but still had the same issues. I finally uninstalled Kaspersky for good, and now my system is running fine again.

I'm also feel a bit uneasy having a Russian-owned program on my machine that has the ability to pry inside my system each time it upgrades. While it may not be "PC" for me to say this, it's reality, especially considering the recent reports of the Russian government using private Russian companies to spy on the U.S. I'm not willing to take that risk on a sub-par program.

One more note, after upgrading to Vista, I wasn't too happy about the lack of security programs available for this new operating system. After reading report after report, I reluctantly decided to try Norton IS 2007. I said reluctantly because I haven't been a fan of recent Symantec products. I'm very happy to report that the new Norton IS 2007 is terrific. It doesn't drain the system like previous versions and there are no more annoying pop-ups. It's nice to have Norton back on top!

Pretty Good, But long startup

Pros: Provides top of the line security

Cons: Long startup, long initial scan

Review: There are a lot of Anti virus programs out there this it one of the better ones, top 5 in my opinion.
Some downsides:
It takes an additional 30-45sec for it to check start up applications on my pc, a pretty good one, every time I start up. If you have a lot of start up applications and just an OK computer this would take much longer.
The initial full system scan for my pc, about 80gb of data and 160gb total size, took about 3-4 hrs. Simple basic scans are probably much faster but this took for ever.
Updated
This Anti Virus is my favorite so far. Its has just what I want. A very plain interface, no fancy animations or sounds. Its always updating so I feel safe.
On my Desktop system, A pretty high end system with lots of ram running xp it is not even noticeable that it is running.

In my laptop on the other hand when I do run intensive applications I do notice that the applications run better when Kaspersky is closed. My laptop is a 2ghz centrino dual core with 1gb ram running xp.

I give it a 7.8 because it is very good but I think they could do something with the performance a little more.

Just Bad Product

Pros: Free Product

Cons: Never worked

Review: In the past I relied on CNET on product reviews for printers, camera, laptops, etc and the products were great. In the case of Kaspersky I installed it and system crashed and I had to ask for computer consultant to bring it back. I am not sure what went wrong but I would not advice anyone to use this product.

Good but could be better

Pros: Updates almost daily, catches a lot of stuff that others dont.

Cons: Seems to slow up my system, has a pop up that ask if you should let this file have access. Is kinda pricey.

Review: It seems to slow up my system and simple programs like Internet Explorer it will ask if I should let it do its thing.
You would think that basic programs like IE it should let it do its thing with out asking you, if you want it to run.
I have the Internet Suite and it blocks programs from accessing the net that it should already know.

KAV knows better than you do

Pros: Robust, Proactive, intuitive UI

Cons: might be "too proactive" sometimes

Review: I've been a Kaspersky user since 1998. I wouldn't say I'm the most careful surfer or adamant user of supplimental security programs. But I *HAVE* to make an exception to Kaspersky products in general. I've used all other major brands of AV you can name off the top of your head, and this anti-virus will absolutely find the nasty little stow-aways on your system and, at your option, bring it to your attention, or just destroy the offending file. I have mine set to alert, and prompt on certain file types. the ONLY virus I've ever got on any system was when I was careless, and had chosen to run another AV program because it was free. Symantec/norton sits around twiddling it's thumbs unless a virus from 3-5years ago somehow finds your system, and even then it's debatable that it will do anything. McAfee is better than that, but not as much as I thought it would be, when it completely failed to stop a trojan from waltzing in, and locking out my web-based email. I was done being cheap, I ordered Kaspersky online, got it installed again, and let a sigh of relief that after running trials of 3 other AV programs, KAV stepped up and confirmed my faith in a wonderful product. 90% of the time, It's less resource consuming than all but the most compact AV suites, and that last portion of time, Is when KAV is actively and deeply scanning memory registers, or stopping yet another junk-embedded website from disrupting my computer's functionality. If your computer has problems with Kaspersky, more likely than not, it's your computer, and the illicit computing habits that are making kaspersky work so hard to clean your system up. My advice, let it do it's job. you may have to wait, but in the end, it's for your computer's good.

no tech support

Pros: Difficult install

Cons: might work / might not - who knows?

Review: The install was a nightmare. There is no tech support despite the "Free Tech Support" claimed
on the box. They never responded to the "email only" tech support inquiry I made. The version (v6 MP1) that I bought at COMPUSA did not work on my XP Professional PC. I had to try the upgrade to V6 MP2 upgrade out of desperation to
get it to even run. It may be the best Internet Security since sliced bread but it's too hard to get there.

Good, comprehensive package, but

Pros: comprehensive, complete and thorough

Cons: inflexible, this is an experts tool

Review: Becasue it does not learn by applictaion, but by each connection, some things will not work until you disect what tools are doign what, delete the applictaion and does not learn by applictaion, it blocked iTunes and iTunes store. I had to turn off Anti-Spy and Anti-Hacker tools and delete iTunes from the firewall settings. I had to change the default settings for encrypted connections. Then it blocked each connection for each of the 16 tracks in the album. It took 20 minutes to buy on album.

The virus is the OS, apparently...

Pros: Works great against the OS virus

Cons: You may be doing a clean install

Review: Kaspersky does its thing well - it finds malware that anything on the big box store shelves ignore or don't seem to find, and the integration is superb with MS office.

That's where my "nothin' but love for ya" stops.

My first (paid) run with v5.x seemed pretty good, until it found things - in an old archive... ok, no problem. User created files-not needed, zap, gone. Next morning - PC wigged out, icons mismatched, registry waxed. Had a ISO restore image, or I'd have been really miffed.

Did a second try with v6 a few days ago (trial version). Figured, ok maybe just some bugs to iron out... it again found a trojan downloader in an email archive (I liked that), zapped it, went about my business, rebooted, and FEAR/FEAR EP were trashed. Icons out of whack again. Same results as V5.

Will be ISO'ing again. What is a bit ironic is that the email archive file "fixed" was from 2004... so why didn't 2005 catch it, since it *was* there then.

Anyhow, being a forgiving sort, I thought I'd give it another shot, but the shots have been at me, twice.

I suppose in all fairness I should have just installed XP and office - and nothing else - ever.

Run, run far and fast.

Offers Great Features But...

Pros: advanced security measures

Cons: froze computer screen for over 5 minutes,

Review: I thought it would be better than Zone Alarm 7 so I downloaded it. It is confusing to setup. I notes the the computer froze when I tried to access Outlook while this product was running. It took a long time, 5 minutes or more, before Outlook would load. After 30 minutes, I unistalled it.

Excellent Product!

Pros: Scanning, detection,low on resources

Cons: there aren't any that I'd complain about

Review: What are these people talking about?-I've had Kaspersky for over a year and have yet to have my system crash. This product has to be one of the top A/V's out there. I used to have Norton on my pc before using Kas and to tell you the truth it was nothing but trouble, to many problems to list here. My recommendation is try the product I'm sure you'll be happy with it!!

This Is "THE BEST" Antivirus

Pros: The Good Update System

Cons: Firewall is a problem while accessing Internet

Review: My Opinion Is that we can definitely go for this software. I Trust this AV because it detects any kind of intrusion or any activity and immeadiately reports to the user to take neccessary action. I would give a 9/10 for this AV. The only problem it has got is the Firewall which is quite irritating while surfing....
My Verdict: Awesome Antivirus Much Better Than Norton.

LAN gone but Virus gone too

Pros: Good scanning, Noticibely fast, Small size, Avg on mem, nice updates

Cons: Driver issues, trashed Nvidia ethernet physical address 00-00

Review: I Uninstalled symantec (not norton) and installed karpersky, it worked fine as it removed a trojan win32 just after install which my symantec was not even able to detect (kill them), this solved issues with my jpeg file. However, what i just see that my network card physical address is 00-00-00-00-00 and i cannot connect to internet. Tried every troubleshooting, internet worked in "safe mode with networking" as karpesky service was disabled, similar problem was faced by frnd, for internet. however his physical address remained original *phew*. my frnd said disable web antivirus to make it work fine, whats the use then if i have to disable it HUH! Well in installed NOD32 and it is working great, it has nice heuristics though, and it has no coflicts. Being honest there is not much difference in configuring both of them accept names. And nod 32 offers very NICE tuts on there site for help in video and stuff.

NOD32 go great.

kaspersky is good for scanning but is confliciting, they even release MP2 u can check there site for all problems.

A welcomed and refreshing change away from the "big guys"

Pros: detection rates, user configurability, low resource usage, quick release of updates/definitions

Cons: not as pretty as the large corporation releases

Review: I was a norton user from 1997 to 2006, suffering slow boot times, errors on shutdowns, "new" releases with less features or just a re-done interface. After buying the 2007 norton internet security and using it 20 min (get a refund) i tried McAfee again. It was a grandma's utility, set it and forget it. Kaspersky is what i needed. Fast loads, fast scans, quickly released updates/definitions, and an options ranging from set and forget to as finicky as i want. People who are having trouble, claiming to be computer literate, probably pay 40 bucks to have 6 dollars worth of oil put in their cars too (Yeah, I've tried AVG, but I want a comlete package). No problems here, running on Vista, satisfied, protected, free from McAfee and Norton.

Best Virus Proctional

Pros: Fast, reliable, stops malware and spywares while you browse

Cons: Price, 6.0 a bit more difficult to navigate then 5.0

Review: I started using Kaspersky 5.0 about 1-2 years ago and I was very satisfied. It is able to stop most websites from installing malware or spyware without your knowledge. Also, it is fast and light. Kaspersky will not slow down your boot up like Norton or McAfee. Don't get me wrong; it will affect your computer a little but just not as much as the other guys. However, I preferred the 5.0 version better. The interface of the 5.0 was very simple and friendly. The 6.0 just look pretty but the functionality and user friendliness took a bit of a hit. It is a virus protection software. I don't need it to be pretty. Overall, I still would recommend it over Norton and McAfee.

Perfect in all aspects!

Pros: Small footprint, constantly updating and scanning.

Cons: None that I have found.

Review: This anti-virus has successfully guarded my computer for a few months now, and I have never experienced a crash or virus infection. It doesn't constantly pop up asking you to allow or deny access to some programs, however it did ask with Brittanica 2007 once.

Overall though, I can play FarCry and other recent games with no slowdown while Kaspersky is running because it automatically lowers its memory usage when some other program begins running.

User Rating: 6/10

Drains system resources

Pros: Good detection

Cons: Drains system resources

Review: I've used almost all the AV products out there, and like always the biggest problem any of them (including Kaspersky) have is wanting to take over every aspect of the system processes. And after tweaking all of the options of Kaspersky, I still noticed large drains in system resources and a slow down with my on-line connection. Also, this program lacks in being able to set up multiple custom profile(s), that allows you to choose what exactly gets scanned, without having to go back into options and reconfigure everything. F-Secure (which is better in this area) will let you do this.

Overall, a six (6) at best.

It might work if it didnt crash my system.

Pros: I would not know.

Cons: Terrible customer service, and crashes system (B.S.D)

Review: I downloaded the free trail version and it worked without a hitch, but then after I purchased the entre package it was a nightmare.
Like the other users, I was afflicted with the Blue Screen of Death. I attempted to resolve this problem with their ?customer service?, but to no avail. After weeks of them not responding to my multiple e-mails, and then when they finally did respond, they just kept asking me the same questions over and over again, as if they didn?t even read my e-mails.
Finally, after weeks of dealing with this, I was given a phone number, but I would have to wait up until three in the morning, and learn the Russian language just to speak with a live representative.
I couldn?t even imagine trying to obtain a refund, I gave up.
My advice, if you want to avoid catastrophic headaches and wasted money, I would strongly recommend seeking other means of virus protection.

Slowed down my computer to a crawl

Pros: no idea what these might be

Cons: highly irritating

Review: I hated this software from the day I installed it. Despite the fact that I programmed it to do its thing in the middle of the night, it would suddenly start grinding away as I was working on an email or a word document, and my computer would freeze for up to 30 minutes or so. Even when the software was presumably off, my computer speed seemed significantly slower. After a miserable week I went back to using AVG's free virus protection, and I'm a happy camper.

Works great for me -- flawless

Pros: It does what it's supposed to do with little-to-no input from me.

Cons: Full-retail price is more-expensive than average, but there are some good deals out there.

Review: This installed and runs great on my laptop running Windows XP Pro (and IE7). I don't understand all the install and crashing problems that the complainers are having -- maybe there's something wrong with their systems.
Kaspersky ran so well I've recommended -- and installed it -- on the computers of 3 friends of mine, and none of them are having problems. One of them thanked me for removing the awful bloated Norton Internet Security and making their computer functional again.

Does NOT protect against spyware

Pros: Easy to use and install

Cons: What spyware protection?

Review: I downloaded this product because cnet wrote such a rave review of it. I have it set to auto update every three hours, I scan the critical areas at startup, and run a full scan every week. However, my one-month-old computer was acting funny, and I suspected spyware. I downloaded AdAware for free, and ran a scan, and it detected 9 pieces of spyware! I recommend looking elsewhere for an all-in-one protection product. This one CLEARLY failed me.

A debacle - and I'm semi computer literate

Pros: A thorough (and long) disk scan

Cons: No telephone support - deleted .pst data in spam file

Review: I downloaded the Kaspersky trial based upon the CNET rating. OK - it can take a bit of time (3 hours) to go through a few G's of data. It's thorough. However, after installing, scanning, deleting or disarming 124 issues - I found my performance to have SLOWED significantly. My Outlook (2002 - SP3)to have a chronic personal folders issue upon each (openend improperly - need to go in safe mode). When I actually CALLED Russia - I was advised they have no telephone support. In using the on-line support, there was no reason or solution provided. On top of this, I needed to download my email and integrate into Outlook. In doing so, Kaspersky, downloaded the new synched email into a Spam folder (hidden) and then subsequently deleted all emails. Again, no support or resolution from Kaspersky.

User Rating: 3/10

The free trial brought my computer to it's knees.

Pros: It might be a good product, but I didn't get a chance to test it.

Cons: I never got the chance to test the Kaspersky product.

Review: The download of the free trial was a frightening experience. The software slowed my computer to a crawl. I couldn't access the internet, I couldn't send e-mails (because I couldn't access my server), nothing worked! My husband and I both tried repeatedly to delete the Kaspersky software, and it wouldn't allow us to delete it.

Not until we finally disabled each individual function of the software were we able to delete it from the computer. Immediately the computer began to function properly again, so no lasting damage was done, except possibly to our nerves.

Because I had read the good reviews, I was very hopefull that this would finally be the anti-virus software for me, but I never got the chance to test how the product acutally performed. It might be a great anti virus software on a different computer, but mine is two years old and may not powerful enough. If minimum system requirements were required, I don't remember seeing them when I signed up for the free trial.

Granted, I am not a very technical user, but this was a scarey experience and I will be reluctant to try free downloads of software in the future.

Machine hung for 2 hours on reboot ! ***?!? Editor's WHAT?

Pros: Seemed thorough, another virus checker I ran later found no leftovers

Cons: Machine is totally unusable after a brief fling with Kaspersky's trial. Kaspersky's startup "avp" and "css" processes took my processor to the floor for two hours on reboot. Tough de-install process

Review: Took about four hours to scan everything, found two viruses. Then, on reboot, hung for two hours before I restarted hardware-style.

It's not like the machine came back after a few hours of holding the processor to the floor; I had to restart in safe mode and de-install. I gave it two hours just to see.

Thank god I had read the comments of some previous victims, posted here on CNET, and jotted down "winconfig". De-install is brutal; study up on other comments posted here and TAKE NOTES before gaily installing.

CNET needs to run this stuff on a variety of machines before handing out Editor's Choice Awards to a product that crippled user after user posting here.

I wouldn't install unless you're got seven hours to waste trying to back out of a disaster.

Good learning experience: Editor's Choice does not mean safe or trouble-free.

Your mileage may differ - mine was seven hours to eliminate two viruses. Learned a lot though.

The Best Protection !

Pros: NO ONE DOES 1 HOURS Updates than Kaspersky!

Cons: Learning curve

Review: I tried Symentec and McAfee and got viruses and now Im with Kaspersky for the last 4 months and have had NO PROBLEMS!

If you do your homework, you will see that Kaspersky is truely the best.

The other guys cant beat the protection!

Works well but much too complicated

Pros: Installed flawlessly, updates everyday, can be configured to catch just about any virus.

Cons: Way too complicated for the average user

Review: This program seems to work well but it's user interface will be way to complicated for nearly all users. I found that I had to disable the Proactive Defense module of the program. With it enabled, you get a CONSTANT barrage of message alerts because it can't tell the difference between virus activity and legitimate processes running on you machine. In this day and age, software should be much more user friendly and intelligent. If you want resonably good anti virus solutions without the need to be a network engineer to use them, stick with Norton or McAfee.

Problem free and fast

Pros: Easy install, doesn't bog down computer, frequent and efficient updates

Cons: None so far

Review: Download and install on 4 different systems from Win98SE to XPSP2 was problem free. Norton had made the Win98 system unusable and it is like a new computer with Kapersky. Previously was crashing several times per week but has not crashed once since installing Kapersky.
Found several virus's that Norton had not detected. This program truly runs in background and lets you use the computer.

I was luck to be able to remove this program

Pros: it is listed pretty high by cnet

Cons: it totally blows

Review: Once installed you get innumerable errors - especially dr Watson. it shuts down everything running in the background and slows the computer to worst than a crawl. stay far far away!

The best AV we have ever used!

Pros: Excellent! Light and compatible with the Windows XP. Don't slow up your Windows at all!

Cons: They should configure network option when installing with Zone Alarm when it is already installed before kasperky!

Review: Kaspersky is the best and there is no doubt! Its updated regularly when a new virus discover. I only discover a problem with the network attack option and that is..If Zone Alarm is already installed and I try to install kaspersky it does not auto configure with Zone Alarm so, computer might be get restart sometimes if you turn of your local area network and turn on again! And another thing is really annoying and that is when a virus caught by real time protection then a very noisy sound played and thats really hurt my ears! though I can stop from configure but they should change their sound for virus found option!

PC ran worst!

Pros: Didn't pay for it.

Cons: Didn't work.

Review: I had similar experience with this program in that my PC ran horrible after installing it. Fortunately the uninstall worked. My Father reccomended AVG and I installed it yesterday and so far so good. Funny how the latest user comments for Kaspersky are negative and so far all comments for AVG are possitive. Yet the Editor had a totally different opinion. I think this program along with Norton and McAfee have tried to be too fancy and have lost their quality some time ago While AVG has kept it simple and made a superior program while doing so.

Impersonator

Pros: Unknown as unused

Cons: Won't even install

Review: I was very hopeful after reading CNET review and ran to buy myself a copy. It arrive without mail-in rebate promised.
During the installation the software found a conflict with McAfee but "insisted" on auto removal only. In the middle of the removal it announced it could not remove the program and refused to install. Requests for help did not get any replies, so now I am sitting pretty with a piece of useless expensive stuff nobody wants to claim responsibility for.
How come CNET gave it such huge review?

Very impressed so far...

Pros: Found threats that Norton couldn't.

Cons: None yet, but just installed it.

Review: Even though I just installed Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 a 24 hours ago, I'm already impressed. The first scan found 304 threats (mostly Trojans), that my Norton 2006 missed!
And finally gone are the WinFixer & Drive Cleaner BHOs. I like that it scans all email folders. Installation was straightforward and problem free. (I first uninstalled Norton and Live Update from Add/Remove Programs before inserting the KAV disc.) Although the list price of $60 seems a bit high, there was a $60 rebate at CompUSA.com, so it's end cost is just the tax and shipping charge. I've noticed that there's been other rebates available almost constantly during the last few weeks as I was researching which AV program I wanted to switch to. Cnet's review of Norton 2007 solidified my decision to try something new. I've used Norton since 2002, and McAfee before that, and was never very happy with them, and unless problems develop, my other two machines will get KAV as their current subs expire.

Ka Querky

Pros: It was only a trial

Cons: Uninstall nightmare

Review: No thanks. Tried it for 20days before trying to rip it from windows. Had to reformat afterward. I personally didn't like all the firewall pup's and had trouble with slow boot up's after install. I went back to Panda Internet Security 2007. It's soooooo easy to use, I have to check the little Panda icon in my system tray to see if it's still on. Looking for an alternative Ka Querky isn't it. Didn't realize how much I loved my other security suite.

Excellent AV Package

Pros: Detection rate is superior, reasonably fast

Cons: Support is mediocre at best

Review: For anyone looking at which antivirus to get, let me start by saying that Kaspersky is a very good choice. (if not the best) Although it lacks good support, (due to company being based in Russia) it's detection and active protection features are first rate. I would also recommend those who look through these reviews to be careful which ones they consider credible, as it seems to me that some of these users are misguided and simply don't understand enough about the nature of security applications. (Not to say all the bad reviews fall under this category - it's just my opinion that some seem to be) I suspect that most of the system crashes or other malfunctions reported are due to one of the issues discussed below. While I have no doubt that Kaspersky isn't perfect, and could cause some systems to crash, I find it hard to believe that it does any more so than other applications. (Norton is definitely a much worse offender - Also I personally have Kaspersky
running on at least 15 systems, all with different hardware/software configurations, without trouble - that doesn't prove that no one will have trouble, just saying I have a good amount of experience with this product)
For starters, installing a security application on a system that is already infected is bound to cause problems - and even if it doesn't, you can't trust that the application will be able to magically clean out all infections when it is being installed on a compromised system. If you have an system that's already infected, you need to boot from a non-compromised OS and clean the infection. (like a boot CD with a AV app - Or even better, in these days of viruses packaged with rootkits to hide their activities, format and reinstall!) You can't blame a newly introducted AV product for problems on a compromised machine.
Furthermore, only savvy users should ever install multiple antivirus/antispyware programs that are set run in the background. (This is key! Programs like Ad-aware (free version) and Spybot that don't run in the background are OK to mix!) Mixing background-running security apps is a
recipe for disaster. This is because these applications are usually set to control access to the same resources on the system. (i.e. Registry, Hosts file, startup apps, IE security settings, etc.) Security apps are not designed to play nice with other security apps, they're designed under the
assumption that they are the primary means of security. (Exceptions include products from the same company, which are likely designed to work with the other) If you don't understand these functions well enough to configure security apps to not conflict, then make sure only one brand of security products is running in the background, or just buy one security suite to handle everything.
If you're reading this review, don't assume this is a bad product just because of a few misguided reviews. Many are blaming a quality product like Kaspersky for problems that are likely not its fault. There are multiple quality AV apps out there, including Kaspersky. Choose what you believe to be best, and don't dismiss Kaspersky solely based on the bad reviews here.

Pros: None - product was down more than up

Cons: I continually got error msg I had exceeded max # of lic

Review: I would not buy this again. I had it professionally installed as I had my laptop reconfigured. It worked for about 1-2 days and then I got the error msg. that I had exceed the max # of license. I emailed the support group and it took over a week for them to respond. Their directions didn't work and I recontacted them, another week+ went by and their directions didn't work. I took the software back to Circuit City and uninstalled and reinstalled the new software and received the same error. I contacted them a 3rd time stating this and their instructions are now so complex I have decided to uninstall and purchase PC Cillin as I have had good luck with them before. Their customer service sucked along with the product and I wouldn't recomend this to anyone as I have been 'unprotected' for almost 2 months while dealing with this ongoing problem.

Too much trouble

Pros: Easy interface, lots of updates

Cons: Conflicts requiring complex fixes

Review: This has a conflict with Microsoft's automatic updates for Windows and Office. The fixes are out there, but pretty complex and not worth the effort. Kaspersky needs to shift some resources from the incredible number of definition updates to fixing compatibility bugs.

Its like its not even there!

Pros: I love the way that Kaspersky software "learns" your habits and preferences. Very easy customization.

Cons: none that I've encountered

Review: I've been using the software for about a month now and never had to worry about my machine being basically shut down by an antivirus scan (hello Norton!) for hours at a time. Kaspersky is updated hourly and can be either as seamless or in-your-face as you want. You control the level of interaction.

I had adware on my PC for awhile. It was recognized by Norton, but Norton was unable to remove it. Day 1 of my life with Kaspersky and every single one of the adware files were removed! Never going back to Norton.

not as good as they said it would be

Pros: easy installation

Cons: no toll free number or chat support

Review: I personally wasted my money on this program. once installed i couild never connect to the internet. the only way to connect was to uninstall the program.there is no chat support like the other programs. if you want my opinion i'd go with windows live one care. anybody know the home address to kaspersky so i can retun their product to them?

Good & Bad, unfortunately too bad to keep

Pros: Cleaned my computer of 60 unsavory files

Cons: My computer either did not work properly or way too slow to tolerate

Review: I was so happy to see the software clean my computer so well, I had Norton previously. I ditched my full Norton complete package for a cheap solely virus protector because it would not let me use my computer as I wished & programs like email were forever crashing. When I saw cnet review I thought this is for me! Not so. The Kaspersky was worse. The scanning was very slow I could not work when it was running.
So I'm still in the market for a good program that will let me control my computer. Too bad.

Best I've Tried in 20 Years

Pros: Doesn't slow down computer; thorough

Cons: Lacks 2 features that would make it darn near perfect

Review: I had no idea why my lightening-fast computer gradually slowed down over the past year, eventually achieving a crawl in the last 2 months -- until I booted PC-Cillin and replaced it with Kaspersky. What a difference! It's back to full speed. I had dumped the disastrous Norton AntiVirus for PC-Cillin a year ago. But Kaspersky blows them both away. It does look different. And the first virus scan you do can take hours. But subsequent scans speed up and after two or three of them Kaspersky can scan a loaded 300 GB hard drive in 15 minutes. Now I admit with all of these I'm actually using the Internet Security versions of them, but I am confident that my impressions apply equally as well to the more limited anti-virus versions (and I cannot imagine why anybody in this day and age would get just an anti-virus application rather than the full Internet Security version).

The two features that would make Kaspersky almost perfect are:
(1) When right clicking its icon in the system tray, a choice to halt the Internet connection like PC-Cillin has. When installing new programs, you almost always have to turn off your anti-virus protection. So this simple toggle switch makes a world of difference.
(2) Integration of spam training into ThunderBird, for those millions of us who have switched our email from the Outlook family. While you can manually designate senders from whom you will always accept or reject email, integration with Thunderbird like Kaspersky provides with Outlook would make a life a lot easier.

That said, Kaspersky is a revelation. It is well worth downloading and installing the fully-functional 30-day free trial.

P.S.: You can actually speak to a live person without charge for tech support -- unlike Symantec. And when you say you wish that the product had a certain feature, they (including sales staff) insist on you explaining what you want so they can submit the idea to the development team. Bravo!

Finally an antivirus product that I can count on.

Pros: Outstanding Detection

Cons: Unfortunately, I can not find any cons so far. Been using it for 2 months and it's fantastic.

Review: Kaspersky has not let me down the last 2 months I've used it. It's detection has been flawless compared to my Norton. I've always been a fan of Norton, but Kaspersky has changed my mind. The product seems very light and while doing a scan it does not appear to interfere with any of my computer operations as has Norton. For those who use Trillian as their IM and have Norton, I also found that Trillian loads very quickly now that Norton is gone and Kaspersky is running which leads me to believe that Norton had many negative effects on other programs running on my computer. My computer is now notably faster in overall operations. Bottom line, if you are looking to renew your antivirus or buy a new product, I strongly reccomend Kaspersky.

Best I have ever used

Pros: Fast, accurate

Cons: None I can see

Review: I have been using over 3 years now. Beats the pants off of all the other big name competeters.

User Rating: 7/10

Good but drains resources at times

Pros: offers good protection

Cons: application integrity control will drain your resources

Review: Good as long as long as you do not activate the application integrity control box on "proactive defense". If you do you will have a chocked up computer with the cpu running at 100%

Best antivirus program out there!

Pros: More effective than any other antivirus. Resource friendly: KAV6 is a major improvement compared to previous versions. Very nice GUI.

Cons: A little bit pricey

Even better than Norton

Pros: Low resources, updates every hour, detects more threats

Cons: no one so far

Review: Pure, fast, clean, detects more virus than my old Norton did, and doesn't consume many resources. It is simply the best antivirus i have met. It has realtime protection that protects you from even unknown viruses

User Rating: 10/10

Currently the best anti-virus on the market!

Pros: Highest detection rates ever!

Cons: Could have a little better heurustics

Review: Kaspersky anti-virus provides superior protection and combined with their new proactive defense realtime time protection
delivers a top-notch anti-virus

It wouldn't let me access pages or downloads

Pros: security I suppose

Cons: too much security

Review: I had to go back to version 5.
I had "page not found" every 3 pages, I had to make images show manually 50% of the time, and I couldn't download files, they froze at before reaching 10%. Same for videos, I had to start over at least 3 times to get to the end.
And no help from the forum.

Greatest Software available

Pros: Updates fast Scans relatively fast and efficently.

Cons: It slows down my internet alittle since I have it updating once an hour

Review: I have had Kasp[ersky, Mcafee, and Norton bbut Kaspersky destroys all of them You can have it check for upgrades every hour, so you always have the newist antivirus definitions possible. Its relatively easy all you have to do is hit the scan button and It picks up more than Mcafee and Norton combined. I have it with Zonealarm Pro and It runs great

I like the this product

Pros: A thorough and complete firewall/virus program with all the bells and whistles

Cons: Takes a bit of work to get some of the cleanups the way an indivudal would like it to be

Review: Symantec was always my program for AV and then firewall until it got to be so slow and had some many hooks to the registry. I tried various products, not only the usual free ones but some I purchased under 30 day return and returned them all. Kapersky is the first I have found to be non intrusive if you want it to be (just turn it off) or completely secure in it's operation. I use the manual download and it's fast and efficient. The 3 trojans it found. 2 from MS Publisher help site was dispersed of quickly and easly.

Nothing Else Comes Close

Pros: Best detection rate in the industry. Light on system resources. Excellent detection of spyware and trojans.

Cons: What are you kidding me? Kaspersky and cons don't go together anymore. They got a divorce in version 6

Review: I've spoken extensively about the superior protection of Kaspersky in several forums and websites like digg. I've had many other anti-virus programs but none has delivered the satisfaction or almost flawless detection rate of Kaspersky including NOD32. I could go on and on but suffice it to say, you need only visit virus.gr to see the superiority of Kaspersky over other anti-virus products.

Crashed my system also....

Pros: Good Ratings, I never was able to run it

Cons: Don't believe that it plays well with other programs

Review: I installed just the scanner alone without the memory resident programs because I didn't want to remove my ZoneAlarm security suite. The program installed, began to update itself and crashed XP. I couldn't reboot normally so had to go to safe mode. The program could not use its uninstaller so I disabled its startup files running msconfig and that didn't work either. Tried uninstalling with system mechanic to no avail. I ended up have to do a system restore (which I didn't want to do) from safe mode to get the system back to normal bootup. I'm sure its a great antivirus but I think there are some definate compatibility issues.

The Best Antivrius Money Can Buy!!

Pros: The Best dection, fast scanning times, comprehensive realtime protection, THE fastest updates.

Cons: Not best heuristics in the world (though still very good), but the engine and signature more than make up for this, though if i could have one improvement this would be it.

System crashed.

Pros: Didn't use is long enough to know.

Cons: Blue screen of death.

Review: This may very well be a good piece of software. However, my experience was not positive. After installing, my computer completely crashed and I received the 'blue screen of death'. I rebooted and uninstalled. Perhaps there was a conflict with other hardware or software on my machine (I'm running Win XP SP2). But it should not have happened.

It is ok but you don`t get total protection... far away from it

Pros: Antivirus detection

Cons: Ugly and hard to handle with

Review: It is ok but it still is far away from being called the best... detection of viruses are good but the rest is totally below the average.... Needs improvement....

Superb Product

Pros: Painless install, frequent updates, very effective protection

Cons: I find no drawbacks to this product. However in reference to CNET's one complaint, I use Win2000, not XP.

Review: I use Kaspersky Anti-Virus and their software firewall as well, both as components of System Mechanic Pro. I previously used a Norton anti-virus product. With the last upgrade the problems it created with my computer were ugly and massive. Customer service of course was non-existent. By contrast, Kaspersky's programs are an absolute dream. Highly recommend them, either standalone or as components in System Mechanic (also a very good suite of pc tools).

Wonderful software

Pros: Make you feel safe

Cons: A bit resources hug

Review: This is a wonderful piece of software. Sometime it makes you wonder what have these U.S. Security companies been doing for the past year. Shame on them. This Sofware is overly good and back ground scan is much faster than before, however they still need to work on the on deman scan. One small complain about this product, or if people from the company is readying. The software should stop scanning Mounting CD when computer is not set to open it in auto. It took me like 3 mins to open my DVD or other CD, but this can be turn off. Compare to other companies like McAfee and Symantec. Kaspersky 6 is still good stuff

very good , excellent detection rate and superb update facility

Pros: This is a very good AV,it has a very good detection rate, and its hourly updates keeps u protected all the time, even though mcafee also has high detection rate, kapsersky is very light on your system

Cons: well, i didnt find any cons, except the cost! and u have to disable the automatic updates coz it updates hourly so it actually slows ur bandwidth, better u update mannualy 2 times a day

Review: a must try product , detects all the viruses, worms, trojans, and a few high rated adwares and spywares, very light on system unlike mcafee, also doesnt slow ur system startup, and let me tell u my system has a ram of 128MB, even then my system doesnt get slow, but ofcourse one must disable the automatic update coz it updates hourly slowing down ur bandwidth, so update mannually 2 times this is enough for full protection
