    "Absolutely HORRIBLE"

by grbelanger on September 30, 2005

    Pros: Scanning and Virus info

Cons: Speed, Interface, Installation and Uninstall

Summary: This is by FAR the WORST ever version of McAfee. Obviously it was rushed to market because it's FULL of bugs. Check the user forums. Also, it's a PIG on resources, and absolutely pathetic to uninstall. The installation took far too long, and the nagging is beyond stupid until you register.
Do yourself a favor and stick with Symantec Norton AntiVirus.

My benchmark for good anti-virus is how often my machine becomes infected.

I've been using McAfee for years on my personal PC while I've been using Norton at work for about the same amount of time.

I have NEVER been infected when protected with McAfee while I've had two (minor) infection on the Norton product. And this despite the fact that I visit much "riskier" sites on my own machine than on my work machine.

Both packages are tremendous resource hogs. But by my benchmark, McAfee wins the safety award hands down.

I object. To my memory, this application was not rushed out to market as quick as last year's version was. It was still Summer when I first saw the 2005 version on the McAfee website and it was Mid-late fall of this year when I saw the 2006 version.

I also object to the fact that it hogs resources. My personal computer is barely affected by it, not to mention it installed in under 7 minutes onto my grandmother's 64MB RAM using computer. You should also write a more detailed review rather than just jabs at the program's speed performance.

I helped a friend install 2006 on her new dell laptop and it is indeed much slower then pervious versions of Mcafee. That said, it is still WAY better than Norton's poor offerings since 2005. We use Mcaffe Viruscan enterprise at work and we have no problems. That said, it is still WAY better than Norton's poor offerings since 2005. We use Viruscan Enterprise 8.0 at work and we have no problems and absolutely love it. On one home computer I have updated my Norton 2003 subscription yearly and stayed away from the newer versions of the full suite software. I thinking of going with Mcafee on all my computers, but checking other user comments to get better feel.

Two years ago I bought McAfee installed on my OEM computer and renewed it once. I had to reload it several times (Why?). A couple of times I caught a virus that required restarting in Safemode to eliminate it because McAfee couldn't delete or even quarentine the virus normally. Finally, a couple of months ago the whole security suite shut down--that's when I found out McAfee tech support with a live, email technician was a joke (his English usage also suggested a location somewhere in India). That's also when I found out their online support was TOTALLY USELESS; it consisted of "canned" responses to detailed emails.
I went to the volunteer forums and was told to download a program from Portugal and make changes in my Windows XP registry (way over my head). I gave up and told McAfee I would never buy McAfee again. They removed me from their renewal list. Now I use PC-cillan Internet Security 2005.

Do you work for Norton's? You are the only person that I have ever heard say all of this. I uninstall and install McAfee on a regular basis and I have never had a problem.

If you want a big resource hog stick to Norton, bogs your computer down completely and as far as Mcafee bogging the computer down. I don't even notice Mcafee is running on my computer which it is. I have both the Mcafee firewall and the Virusscan. It works great.

Don't listen to these comments, just try it for yourself, and if you don't like Mcafee, try Norton, but if you have problems with Mcafee I can guarantee you wait till you install Norton Antivirus.
