Pros Maybe a little more protection
Cons Rare when it works perfect. Very frustrating.
Summary Switching to McAfee from Norton just did not work out for me. I have had it installed for about 5 months now. It is rare when it loads up really fast. Usually it takes about 5 minutes to load up and sometimes 1 minute. It is always freezing my system. I have never had a good connection with my Microsoft ActiveSync. McAfee only allows a connection once in a long while so I cant sync my pocket pc. I have been so frustrated with McAfee troubleshooting it and making phone calls. Have reloaded it twice and just cant seem to function 100%. THis is software is very unpredictable. I had norton previously and never had any problems with it. I guess I wanted to try something new and it ended up not working for me. I will never use McAfee again. I have just had too many problems with it. I have had a great deal of frustration with it because it works great but then it just acts up and lets me down. I have given it more then enough chances. This last time I got so mad I got tired of trying to trouble shoot it so I broke the CD and threw it against the wall. I am going back to Norton where it was fine to begin with.
Pros Strong and consistent
Cons None that I've seen to date
Summary I've used all of them out there....McAfee, SYMC, Trend, CA, Panda etc....I've seen the good bad and super ugly. So first off, there is truly only 3 AV companies that you ever want to consider, McAfee, SYMC & Trend. Now because Trend sent out a Trojan like file that crashed thousands of CPUs in July (search InformationWeek.com) I'll take them out. So we have McAfee & SYMC...both offer spyware, firewalls etc. however SYMC doesn't offer one interface that brings them together...you actually have to go to each product. McAfee has the Security System that is clean and crisp...giving you a run down of security on your computer, updates, preferences, detections etc....by far the best I've seen. In addition the McAfee Scan Engine that searches and destroys those nasty programs is much quicker and sophisticated. Worms now infest your memory, and only McAfee offers in memory scan.
I haven't heard of one software company that hasn't had a run in w/ some customers issue...no product is meant for everyone. I've worked in the IT world for big companies and protected my home network and individual desktops w/ a variety of products...McAfee is what I suggest when asked and is what I pick.
Pros It finds some sites, viruses, malware that are dangerous
Cons Basically the product does not live up to the advertising; it flags many sites that are OK and neglects others that are harmful.
Summary McAfee is exploiting genuine fears of damage caused by viruses, malware etc. Advertises this product will make you safe but it really doesn't sufficiently reduce the risk.
Pros None - Nada, Zip, Zero!!
Cons One of the most frustrating software experiences in years!
Summary Please don't subject yourself to McAfee customer service Hell! I had difficulty loading the software, using the software and could never get a live human on the phone to help with their junk. Even canceling the service was frustrating as they don't appear to list a phone number to cancel the service so you have to go through on line customer no service for over half an hour to be told you need to call a particular number. How Pathetic. A truly lousy experience from beginning to end.
Pros Great interface.
Cons Would not stay running. It often went from - enabled to disabled- frequently.
Summary I switched to this crap from Norton only because Comcast gave it to all it's subsribers free. First off it required more of my system resources, and then it would not stay "enabled"! The oddest thing happened, the McAfee tray icon would constanly go out-and when I clicked on it it would say that the software was disabled. Then when I supposedly "enabled" again - seconds later it would disable itself all over again. So I would have to uninstall McAfee and reinstall it to get it to work properly. After about 5 or 6 months of having to do this...Guess what? My system crashed! I lost everything!I will never ever use this poroduct ever again ! I don't care how free it was with Comcast. I would rather pay for Norton.
