Norton AntiVirus (NAV) can seek out and destroy bugs better than an Orkin man, identify viruses faster than the CDC, and stomp worms harder than the cruelest kid. Version 2002 showcases a new, simple interface and provides some additional protection against e-mail and script-based nasties. If you're new to the antivirus game, purchase NAV 2002 ASAP. But if you already have Norton AntiVirus 2001, pass on this upgrade, unless you're migrating to XP, and pay $10 for another year's worth of virus definitions.

Dumbed down
Norton AntiVirus 2002 has aggressively streamlined its look. In previous versions, the main program window contained eight lines of text that described every detail of the program's functions--whether the autoprotect feature was on and when your last virus update took place, for example. Norton AntiVirus 2002 trades in all this text for a panel of self-explanatory indicators that clue you in to what's going on with your system (think car dashboard). For example, a green indicator displays the time of your last scan.

You don't have to configure NAV 2002 much at all--a fact that beginners will appreciate. Norton AntiVirus veterans, however, may want more control over the program. For example, NAV still automatically scans e-mail attachments, but you can no longer select which e-mail accounts it scans; it scans all of them or none. Also, NAV 2002 has made it tougher to schedule a virus scan for a later time and date: the scheduling feature has lost its prominent position on the first screen of NAV and sits at the bottom of the scanning page instead.

Two-way e-mail protection
But despite its interface woes, NAV 2002 includes the same powerful set of antivirus, anti-Trojan-horse tools as its predecessor. It scans for bugs on Windows start-up, scans in the background whenever a file is created or opened, watches for downloaded viruses, checks out e-mail attachments, and quarantines infected (or just suspicious) files. As in 2001, NAV 2002's e-mail protection integrates with any POP3 e-mail client, such as Eudora, Outlook Express, and Outlook.

And NAV 2002 has some new tricks up its sleeve: it still sniffs out viruses in incoming e-mail attachments (as NAV 2001 did), and now it checks outgoing attachments, too, so you can rest assured that you're not infecting others. Since some of the most noxious worms, such as SirCam, replicate via e-mail without the sender's knowledge, we particularly appreciate this improvement.

We also love NAV 2002's new Script Blocking feature, which promises to block script-based viruses, such as the I Love You bug, before they do damage, even if Symantec hasn't identified them yet. In three separate tests, NAV 2002 successfully detected the I Love You virus. The program also scans your e-mail for embedded JavaScript worms and alerts you if it finds any suspicious scripts. You can then decide whether to run the script or stop it in its tracks from a pop-up dialog. Want to scan a specific file on your PC? No problem: 2002 integrates with Windows Explorer so that when you right-click any file, one of the options in the pop-up menu lets you scan for viruses.

Despite these improvements, NAV still doesn't keep you informed as it scans. You get a nice summary after NAV has worked its magic, but during the process, NAV doesn't tell you how many files it's scanning or how much time it will take, unlike its major competitor, McAfee VirusScan.

Best in the biz
Even though it doesn't have a ton of new features, NAV 2002 still gets our vote as the best virus checker. We threw more than 50 viruses at it, including script-based and e-mail viruses, and NAV nailed all but two.

But our tests are far from exhaustive. There are tens of thousands of viruses out there, and hundreds active "in the wild" at any one time. One of the best spots to keep an eye on NAV's track record against viruses is Virus Bulletin's 100% Award, a site that salutes programs that detect 100 percent of in-the-wild viruses. According to the site, NAV has a 16-month winning streak--the best of any program.

We're just as impressed by how deftly NAV squashes bugs. Unlike earlier editions, which alerted you that a virus was present, then asked you what you wanted to do with it, NAV 2002 automatically repairs an infected file (or, if it can't, quarantines the file), and alerts you only after it's both found and fixed the problem. This may sound like a minor point, but for beginners, it's reassuring to know that the software has already taken care of the job.

Version 2002 still lacks one significant feature: unlike McAfee VirusScan, NAV 2002 doesn't sniff out viruses packed in ZIP files downloaded from the Internet. In our tests, NAV didn't kick in until we tried to extract infected files from the ZIP archive. We wish NAV would nail virus-infected ZIP files before they reach our hard drive.

Up-to-date definitions
Like its ancestors, NAV 2002 relies on the excellent LiveUpdate, which checks the Symantec site for updated virus definitions every four hours (assuming you're online), so, unless you catch a virus seconds after it hits the Web, NAV is probably already up-to-date and ready to repel the most recent viruses. Norton AntiVirus automatically downloads available virus definition updates and installs them in the background.

As before, NAV barely impacts your PC's performance. According to our tests, NAV 2002 used just 3 percent of our Windows Me system resources, slightly less than NAV 2001's 4 percent footprint.

XP marks the spot
Norton AntiVirus 2002's biggest attraction, though, is its support of Windows XP. This is the first and, at the moment, the only, antivirus app for that OS. If you're upgrading to XP, and you rely on NAV to search and destroy viruses, spring for the $30 upgrade.

On the whole, though, if you use NAV 2001, you won't find enough goodies in version 2002 to justify paying three Hamiltons for an upgrade. Our advice: spend just $10 for another year's worth of virus updates. You'll still be safe.

Great program, I miss it...

Pros: Worked well with Win 98

Cons: None, wish I hadn't deleted it

Review: This worked well for me from download to install and use, and I haven't had a virus the whole time it's been installed. I was forced to delete it when I "upgraded" to version 2005, and the new version won't go into automatic for me. I am trying now to find 2002 again and ditch the 2005 version.

Pros: Works great, but...

Won't stay installed

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased a new computer with a free norton trial version. I installed it with no problem, only to find that it was not installed after 3 days. I registered it and did the downloads with no problem. I then purchased the norton 2002, and had the same problem. My subscription runs out in sept, 2003. I now have free virus protection on my computer, I don't know what to do. I know that I installed it on my old computer with a ME syster and it's still installed. Time to look for a replacement. Any suggestions please leave. Thanks.......

It works with no hassle

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Easy to set it and forget it using the scheduler. Works fine with quick response to new threats. New virus updates available automatically. However, a firewall such as Zone Alarm and spyware removal, such as Ad-aware and/or Webroot Spy Sweeper, are needed to get a more complete security strategy.

Boot Loop

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased a new computer and it had the free 60 days of Norton Antivirus installed. I renewed my subscription when it ran out and ever since then I have been having boot looping problems. I am going to try to get my renewal money back and go to McAfee.

It killed my computer and refused to release it's claws

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used LiveUpdate regularly. Last night the Live Update said it needed to reboot the computer. What it didn't tell me was that the computer would be in an infinite loop of reboots. NAV can't be uninstalled from safe mode, but using msconfig I was able to have it not run at boot and then uninstall it in normal mode. Of course then my network and DSL didn't work because NAV adds a requirement that it be running before TCP/IP, DHCP, etc can run and doesn't remove this requirement when it's uninstalled. A "simple" search through the registry for all instances of SYMTDI fixed that. Unless you understand these fixes and enjoy dealing with them I would avoid this "fine" program like the plague. Luckily Microsoft provides two free support for two incidences and doesn't object to fixing other software company's problems for them so I was able to get up and running again.

Works fine for W98 Users

Pros:

Cons:

Review: On reviewing other comments slamming this product, the lack of speedy Symantec support was at the forefront. I beg to differ. I had the problem of the scan stopping without apparent reason and after rebooting several times, I decided to try for tech support via email. I got my answer back the next morning and the suggested fix has worked thus far. The problem was thought to be a damaged file in the Windows/Temp folder. The recommended solution: clear the Temp folder completely, after perhaps moving certain files you just can't be without for a minute to another part of your hard drive.

The best product!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton Antivirus is in my opinion the best antivirus software that you can purchase. The price is good and the quality is even better!

Good but too slow!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's not possible that 800 Mhz and 256 mb ram with Norton antivirus run like 133 mhz and 32 mb ram!!! That's all!!

does not give protection

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I updated NAV on a regular basis, but it still alooowed the w32.bugbear virus in which destoyed NAV itself and my whole PC and crashed it. Not worth the money!!!

We dumped it

Pros:

Cons:

Stick With 2000!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The version 2002 I got does not include Norton Rescue and Liveupdate! This is no good! But my 2000 still works better and not as sensitive as 2002!!!

User Rating: 8/10

very good program

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i've had all versions, since win95 came out, except version 4, they have an uninstaller you can download from their site ,Rnav.exe or symclean.exe, they added live update with version 5. and the auto update with 2001 version 2003 is even better, it auto updates the program files as well.

User Rating: 8/10

Great, when you get it installed

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It works wonders when you can get it working. It took me a while and a bit of trouble (program not opening etc), but when it did work properly, it was great.

User Rating: 3/10

I'd rather have a virus any day.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A virus would not have made such a mess and would have been easier to get rid of. Norton is a VERY disappointing program. A waste of $49.

User Rating: 4/10

Using XP? Don't buy this product.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As of Windows XP, Symantec has lost their edge on the Windows OS. Don't be surprised when your virus protection one day suddenly becomes disabled and there's nothing you can do about it. Symantec will have you install and uninstall 100 times but NOTHING will correct it except an FFR (FDisk, Format, Reinstall).

It should be free for home users!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Change your business model Symantic and get your corporate customers to subsidise Norton, making it available free to all home users. Noho ora mai, Brien.

Too many bugs in e-mail scanning

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton 2002 has bad bugs in it's e-mail scanning: If there are 2 periods at the end of a message (the terminator charicter) Norton 2002 crashes. If you attempt to download an unfinished message (a partially sent message), norton 2002 crashes. Symantec has known about this bug sence March 2002, and has never released a patch for it, stating that the mail had a problem to begin with, it is not a bug. AVG antivirus is FREE and IT does not crash when this happens. (www.grisoft.com) McAfee does not crash when this happens (www.mcafee.com). Every time I ask Symantec (makers of Norton) about this they send me a form message stating "Norton 2002 does not come with free support" or they ignore it entirely. Symantec has pitiful support and bug fixes. There are many more to choose from that are far better and far cheaper. BIG thumbs down.

Pros:

Cons:

Another great NAV program in an already great line of NAV products.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This thing does not slow down system performance. Granted I have a p4 2.4 with 384mb of ram but I also had it installed on my AMD k6-2 350 with 224mb of ram and had no troubles what so ever. I believe you have to uninstall the previous one before you intsall NAV 2002. Also it depends on what the Auto-protect is set up to scan. That can cause system performance. Also 2002 was much better then 2001 and that was good too. I use 2001 at work and it works just fine on the p2 333 with 384 mb of ram. Norton has always been easy to use, scratch that, it gets better and better. McAfee gets difficult and more difficult. I would recommend this to anyone.

only 3 month virus updates!

No More Symantec Products!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Like many people here, I have been burned by Symantec products many times! Pre-installed NAV 2002 caused my HP notebook to crash! So finally, I removed ALL Symantec products from my computer and installed with these Anti-Virus programs. (1) PC-Cilline 2002. It certainly is better than Norton AV. It does not slow down my XP. It is not resource hogging. BUT you can ONLY install it to ONE computer. SO... (2) AVG 6.0. This is the BEST FREE (really FREE, not a trial version) Anti-Virus program available. You can download it from cnet.com. Just check the user ratings, you will be satisfied. I have been using it for months now, and protection has been wonderful! It does not slow down your computer! Try it, you will not regret it.

Won't Let My Computer Boot

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Installed Nortons 4 weeks ago and STILL fighting to get my computer to boot right. First automatic live update was causing the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH on the boot - none of the fixes on the bbs or Nortons fixed it. Finally disabled the stupid thing - got it working right for about a week until one day it Live Updated while I was online. When I rebooted I got the standard message 'updating files' and then get a BLACK SCREE OF DEATH - Windows Protection Error. Now it is crashing on the email protection program SYMTDI.VXD. I can get around it via step-by-step in safe mode. There is NO support/info for this error message - no response from Symantec. I am uninstalling and going with something else. Norton's is great if it would work.

Works great until you need support!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used Norton Antivirus and Internet Security for several years and thought that the product did a good job. However, I recently encountered a subscription renewal issue. When you purchase NAV you get one year of subscription updates which are key to keeping the product effective. Recently, I was prompted to renew my subscription. I could either order a new cd or download the software. I opted for a new cd. Once I received the cd I installed the software, yet I still get a notice that I need to update my subscription. By the way, the cd that I received is the same version of NAV that I purchased last year. I spent hours trying to figure this out including a lot of time on the Symantec web site. Nothing worked and unless you are willing to spend $20+ to place a call, you cannot talk to a support person. I'm tired of purchasing software and hardware and getting lousy support. Sometimes web pages are great, but not always. From now on, I'll be checking on the support options for all products before I purchase anything in the future.

good but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I think that the Norton 2002 is a good program, and gives your PC the best security against internet and local viruses... but if you have 128- MB ram it can slow down your PC, the best program, but i think that the 2001 version is better.

Stick to Trend PC-cillin

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program completely screwed up my security settings for the internet. I could no longer access "secured" sites such as my bank acct info, etc. I tried going to obtions and fixing it. All attempts (many attempts) were unsuccessful. I finally uninstalled it and wella, my complete internet is back!

Non-effective against the new email viri

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton did not detect email viri (Win32/Klez.H@mm,HTML/IFRAME_EXPLOIT*), entered my system even though I update it and run it several times daily, causing major damage and a reload. It also seems to slow the overall speed of my system down too and scans slower than other products. Non-effective, memory hogging fossil of a antivirus. I use RAV antivirus which for some reason is not being even talked about on CNET making me think they have "ties" to the big dogs...anyways..Use at your own risk..you will be sorry!

older versions had better interface

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I give this a thumbs up because it works, but I'm disappointed with the interface. It uses a lot of system resources and doesn't even give you an idea of how much longer the scan will take. The older versions were more informative. There's also no way to get scan results at a command prompt, which would be useful for telnet. I have encountered a serious problem that symantec doesn't seem to care about: this program suffers from what could be called a "process leak". I use a download manager, and have on occasion left my computer unattended while it downloads 100 separate files. Each time a file is downloaded it spawns a new antivirus process to scan the file. I come back to my computer and find 60 or 70 copies of antivirus running, and an "Out of Memory" error message. The computer can't proceed until you manually close all the antivirus processes. Each of them consumes around 7MB of memory. I submitted a report on this to Symantec, but had no response. It's also irritating that it insists on popping-up and making you click "Finished" every time it scans something. All scans should run quietly in ONE background process - but apparently symantec wants to show off for the user instead of just doing its job quietly.

pure trash

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Almost invariably, Norton 2002 causes my laptop to crash. Moreover, the live update has never worked. The most "laughable" part is when you try to get service on the phone. You would have a better chance of solving the Mid-East crisis on your own. This product and the so-called customer support is the worst. Don't buy it.

Pros:

Cons:

No customer service!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No matter how good your product is, if you don't have good customer service then no one will recommend your product and what's worst, you loose a customer forever. CNet should review such issues before putting any product on the Editor's best choice. I bought Norton basicly because of your ratings but I had to get a refund after being unable to use the product for two weeks, waiting for Customer Service to reply.

Cons:

Review: Thanks for the tips people. I was thinking of purchaseing Nav 2002 but after reading these reviews, there is NO-WAY I'm going to share the same nightmares you all are having with NAV. A software nightmare in Win 98

Pros:

Cons:

Review: At least 5 attempts to install/uninstall, wizard crapped out each time . Each required numerous reboots. Each left me in limbo-forced to manually muck out the registry to even try starting again. Even when the uninstall completed and I ran Symantec's purge utility, I was still finding Norton stuff in the registry for weeks after switching to McAfee. One of the worst software nightmares I've seen--and I'm a Senior Systems Analyst going on 10 years now.

it didn't crash my win2000 system

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Life is too short to be wasted searching for support that does not exist! The very first thing the consumer needs to see when picking up a Symantic product is: We do not offer free support. Choose from two PriorityCare lines: 800-927-3995 at $29.95 per incident charged to your credit card. 900-646-0033 at $2.95 per minute charged to your phone bill. The very next thing the consumer needs to see when perusing a Symantic product is ?we do not answer technical support or customer service questions.? If you are rich, and you have nothing better to do then, sure go ahead and spend your money. If you?re as poor as I am, well, enough said. Good, bad, it doesn?t matter. Symantic never claimed to have bug-free software. Whether your system crashes, or not, while using any of these products is a factor of your OS and the Symantic module. SystemWorks can be used productively (for example, the virus software works very well on my win2000 system,) but I?m leading a consumer group that boycotts products that have no support. If you want to Join my movement, then stay away from Symantic. Hint: reading the ?Only Negative? reviews can be very insightful when more than one review points out the same problem.

An absolute disaster

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried to install Norton Antivirus 2002 on my Windows 98 machine. It would not install properly after at least 5 attempts. It created its own supervisor account to which I had no access and even if I did have access, the relevant pages in the Assistant would not display. As I did not have supervisor rights, I could not remove it and had to use Cybermedia Uninstaller and for some strange reason deleted ALL my Word documents from my hard drive. I eventually appeared to get it working and found that it was blocking my outgoing emails. I removed it and tried to get my money back. Simply Computers in the UK refused flatly to acknowledge my problem and there is no way to talk to Symantec without throwing more money after bad. If you have Windows 98 beware. This is criminal and companies like this should not be allowed to operate.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It only took Norton 3 months to crash my brand new Dell/XP system. I was foolish enough to try Norton once again after it destroyed my previous 98 machine. Norton AntiVirus Best By Far

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I would definately recommened Norton for its effectiveness and easy user interface.

User Rating: 7/10

Second best to a good firewall!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I definitely prefer Norton 2002 over the other resource sucking scanners out their. Works efficiently enough; however the new features just aren't their. Its not a complete windows scanner (scans a select few ports). Using a Microsoft Exchange server for emails, Norton does Not scan incoming or outgoing messages. Windows 98 users may also find a glitch in their sound properties. The setup removes "default sound" from the sound properties, as the install was not O.S. specific. The generic install looks for default beep (as in windows 2000 or newer systems) which is nonexistent, and disables its prerequisite, default sound.

Greatest AV and Internet Security System EVER!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using computers and anti-virus programs for like 95% of my life and Norton has been the best for it's AV and Internet Security for example comparing it to McAfee I once had mcafee and norton on the same comp at the same time (bad idea btw) and a boot sector virus tried to attck my system, Norton did a complete system halt and put on sorta like the blue screen of death and asked me what to do, I told norton to repair the file and it did so sucessfully. after that done the computer went back to normal and I found this little window from mcafee saying there's a virus attacking me, no info whatsoever about it. shows how mcafee sux and NORTON RULES!!!! ;)

User Rating: 3/10

It crashed my computer!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It really slows down the whole system, if I decide protection against "dangerous scripts" it even blocks Windows XP own scripts sometimes! This maybe the best protection, but it really sucks!

User Rating: 10/10

Works Great, period!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One of the issues with all anti-virus software is that you have to keep them up dated since new viruses appear weekly. Norton 2002 updates itself w/o any user action. Get it and Norton Personal Firewall if you have an "always on" connection to the internet such as DSL...

User Rating: 5/10

It's like underclocking your PC...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The security provided by NAV 2002 is debatable. Sure, it protects you from document and application-based viruses, and worms and viruses from incoming email, but it can cause a 30% decrease in overall system performance. NAV has never been an intuitive product, nor a product that can run through several LiveUpdates without crashing (hope you like to reboot). NAV is for people who send and receive a lot of email in Outlook/Outlook Express (no help for Eudora or Lotus Notes users), and swap Office documents which might contain malicious code. The average home user, especially if they like to burn CDs or play 3D games, will find NAV to be more trouble than it is worth.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I used to hate the idea of anti-virus, and anything norton related. NAV 2002 changed my mind, it runs quietly, doesn't slow down my machine, and doesn't require any maintenance. I don't know where the reviewer gets that it doesn't scan zip files, it scans all of mine just fine, and reports the number of files inside. To those who say it's unstable, you must have only used prior versions. This one rocks.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a great app. You never know it's even running until it finds a virus. It warns you, cleans/quaranteens/deletes it and goes back into hiding. It does NOT hog resources or slow your system performance. I had over 200 instances of Fun.Love.W32.MM hit my system in an eight-minute span and NAV picked off each one flawlessly. Easy to use, and stable -- NAV2K2 is a winner, and XP compatible too!

Slow boot - bad service

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I don'tunderstand how you guys can rate this product so high. It slows down considerably the boot. Service is a disater to say the least. You go thru a large number of screens at Symantec site before you can e-mail them. I reformatted the HD and I never got an answer why I couldn't retreive my copy that I paid for. I got an answer from Digitalriver explaining that there was a problems with my cookies (of course there were no cookies after reformatting)and that was the reason why I couldn't find my order and relevant copy to download. After insisting for three weeks I got a "special" permission to re-download. This is not what I call service. For all my other software it was very easy and fast to get new passwords from the software houses, just submitting my e-mail address.

Excellent Allround Protection

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought Norton Antivirus as part of the package that comes with Norton Internet Security 2002. Both Norton Antivirus & Internet security are exactly the same price but Internet Security 2002 INCLUDES Norton Antivirus, so why go for the Antivirus on its own. The rating I have given above is for the Antivirus pat of it only. However, I would highly recommend Norton Internet Security 2002, it has all of the following features: Norton Antivirus, Norton Personal Firewall,Privacy Control, Parental Controls, warns of anyone attempting to hack into your PC & also an Ad blocker which stops all those annoying adverts and pop ups(it has eliminated about 99% of them), plus everything is updateable with there 'Instant Updater' I run Windows XP on my PC, I used to have McAfee but this created no end of problems even though it was supposed to be compatible with XP

Be careful about installation

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The first attempt at installation under XP Home led to a collision with another process over a registry key. When Symantec says to close all running programs before installing, they mean it! Whenever a reboot is called for, it should be a "clean boot" so be sure you know what that means. A lengthy manual un-installation was required before another attempt, and all this wasted many hours. To their credit, the Symantec support website contains well written instructions, an automated helpdesk, and good human tech backup. After all this, the product is worth it.

Pros:

Cons:

The only thing I've noticed so far is that my system resources have gone from 82 to 65 after installing!!! I've noticed no slow-down in the Internet, and haven't tried burning CD's since I installed it. I hope it doesn't give me problems there. I also got Norton Personal Firewall. I ran the security check in Norton System Tools before installing Firewall, and boy was I surprised. Now I have invisible and safeweb browsing My laptop is like Fort Knox. It's not Good as It's Older versions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's not Good as It's Older versions (NAV 2000,2001) but it still have it's brilliant capabilty to stop any viruses (if you keep it up to date) than other best known virus guards available but the new version(2002) causes system unstability on windows XP and it's take so long to load in to the memory when computer starts causeing system unstability on the start's up but onece it's succsessfuly loaded in to memory it runs so smoother... and Norton AntiVirus includes a technology called Bloodhound, which dramatically increases virus protection against new and unknown viruses. Bloodhound isolates and locates the various logical regions of a file and then analyzes the program logic for virus-like behavior. Bloodhound detects a high percentage of unknown viruses. In addition, Norton AntiVirus detects unknown viruses by monitoring activity on your computer for behaviors that viruses typically perform. When a suspicious activity is detected, Norton AntiVirus prevents the action from continuing. so people if you need a higher level of virus protection then it's worth think about norton 2002..

brought my system to a standstill

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I run with a PC that is a few years old but still very capable (900 mhz w/ 256MB RAM) and ever since I installed NAV 2002 all of my applications move at the rate of a turtle. Web browsing-forget it. It takes forever. I have a hard time rating anything else about this product because of this major problem. I only got it becaues CNET picked it as an editor's choice. Next time I will read the user reviews.

Essential Effective Virus Protection

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I switched to McAffee a couple of years ago but came back. Make sure your computer has enough ram to run and enough room on your hard disk. Has already detected two virus's trying to infect computer in the last two months. These days email spam is reaching new heights and a virus protection program is essential or your computer will get infected. Highly recommend product. Updates itself regularly.

Poor usability and support.

Pros:

Crippled me almost instantly

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I started with Win 98 and installed this product. I quickly began receiving OS error messages (blue screens) related to it. When I upgraded my mother board and cpu, I moved to Win XP -- and as soon as I installed NAV 2002 any application I ran began crashing, and continued to do so until I uninstalled NAV. This may be the best anitvirus utility ( can't say, myself), but it has NOT been friendly to my pc or OS. I don't have any idea where to go from here.

Best anti-virus HANDS DOWN!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As a profesional service tech I use NAV 2002 CONSTANTLY. 99.9% of the time, it's an underlying problem (usually with Windows) that causes problems with NAV. Pay ZERO attention to the negative reviews - they're from people who blame Norton for operating system problems. NAV 2002 is the best software af ANY kind for the buck.

Do *NOT* upgrade

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was absolutely amazed to find out that on detection of an email virus you no longer have the ability to delete it. Your only choice is quarantine. Tech support re-assured me, nope, can't delete it, you can only quarantine it. You also still have two dialogs to click for every email virus. I may be alone but with so many viruses coming through my inbox I don't want to be bothered, just delete the d*** thing, note the email that it had a virus, and move on with life. Well, that's still not possible.

It doesn't do what it's supposed to do...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton let me down... CNET let me down... On my brand new XP Laptop, I recieved an infected email. With my definations being up to date, I figured it would be safe to open the attachement (the email was from a friend of mine) WRONG! I downloaded the KLEZ virus! Thanks for NOTHING, Norton... I was so upset, after looking high and low, I finally found anti virus heaven with NOD32... Coupled wih Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, NOW I can sleep at night! I WILL NEVER EVER INSTALL ANOTHER NORTON/SYMANTEC PRODUCT EVER!! AS LONG AS I LIVE! Nod32 caught the KLEZ virus no problem, and so what if it won't "automatically" clean it! Just catching it was better than infecting me! This whole experience really educated me.. I never used anything before but Norton's and I always had viruses on my systems.. Now, my systems run clean lean, mean, and smooth! Please, educate yourselves, and learn of alternatives to Norton, don't use bloatware, and I don't even know if CNET is going to publish this, but don't trust everything you read... Find out for yourself...

Simply The Best There Is

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been using Norton Antivirus since version 2.0 and in that time I have NEVER run accross a virus it didn't protect me from. I work as a computer technician, and at my shop we get tons of machines that have viruses on them. Of all these, I'd say that about 50% had virus protection but didn't update the definitions, well norton has been updating mine automatically for years! The other thing I must mention is that while Antivirus software does slow your PC slightly, from my experience with hundreds of PC's I have noticed that on a pc running norton antivirus this slowdown is barely noticable. McAffee software, on the other hand, seems to do okay against virus infections themselves, but causes all sorts of performance problems, and on many machines that I have run accross, removing mcaffee antivirus solved a host of other bizzare and seemingly unrelated application/system/stabilty/speed issues. Get Norton AntiVirus! It is simply the best.

Hangs My Browser

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After boot up, you have to sit and wait 2-3 minutes before auto detect is enabled and connection is made through the network. Even after disabling auto detect and disabling other resource chugging apps, it still takes forever to cycle on. Norton support has been no help on resolving this. Overall the program does not appear to be a bad product but for CNET to rate this as being their top choice leaves me looking at these editors with a cocked eyebrow... there are better performing products on the market without the unneeded bells and whistles that will get you through this mean old world just fine. I'm switching to e-trust.

Install nightmare

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased and downloaded NAV2002 early May on my Win98 comp, just to experience most of the problems already listed (need to remove old version, upgrade to IE5.5, many system reboot, errors messages during a month ) then I looked at Symantec website to learn they had fixed some bugs with rel 8.07 which is not offered for download but was supposed to be automatically loaded with LiveUpdate. Was not the case for me. I had to uninstall and install again, just to get "maximum install count" error message from DigitalRiver (which handles the download for Symantec). And I could not contact Symantec by email because you are forced to go thru the SEARCH screen before getting access to their email, and the other day, their SEARCH was dead ! Question : HOW CAN YOU RATE IT 8 out of 10 with 61% of users giving negative feedback ? You do not even mention install issues in your recent review.

Bad Service, Bad Software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I downloaded the trial version of this software. Little did I know this required me to purchase the software. Why? Because when I tried to uninstall the trial version, my net connection stopped working. Not just one account, two accounts - one through DSL and dial-up connections. When I tried to get help from Norton, they pointed me to their standard uninstall software and then had the audacity to blame my service providers - despite the fact that both providers were affected and despite the fact that my wife's system connected to both providers without any problems. So, now I own Norton Antivirus because otherwise I couldn't connect to the net. But if I had a choice, I'd buy McAfee.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I run NAV 2001 and 2002 on separate macines. NAV 2002 is supposed to be a step forward - 'Not'. NAV has dropped Zip drive support and doesnt support usb devices or CD RW for its Rescue Set. That last by the way has had major problems since NAV 2000. It currently doesnt know what to do with Anti Virus definitions that are supposed to help a recovery. Service and Support on the problem are non existant. End users are not happy that a major portion of the program fails to work. Nortons Live Update usually only has updated virus definitions on Wednesday ( once a week) unless some major outbreak kicks in. You are better off using Intelligent Updater manually to keep up to date. The good side... with up to date Virus Definitions Program works fine and is easy to use. Advice after 3 plus years with NAV --- Go to Symantec help sites pick an area like NAV 2002 or Rescue Disks and read help posts and answers - that gives a better clue of problems than anything.

User Rating: 8/10

Mostly good, one BAD

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great program, easy to install, set up and run. To be most effective, one should utilize the manual Intelligent Updater that is invariably days and many definitions ahead of Auto or Live Update. The biggest "con"...Basic Rescue has a programming fault that has caused Rescue to fail each time the amount of data in the virus definitions exceeds the capacity of the existing number of disks in the Rescue Set. In other words, it doesn't know when to add another disk to the set. This feature has been crippled since birth and as of May 20th, 2002, it has become unuseable again. Response from Symantec has been poor, at best. They say Development is "aware and working on it." They also said the fix will come "next week, next month, next year or whenever they get around to it." The Service and Support site for Rescue in over a week behind in answering email from discontented end users. I have both Nav 2002 and 2001. My preference is NAV 2001, simply because I like the interface better. Before purchasing any version, one should go to the Symantec Service and Support site and read the letters...make up your mind from there. Since the Customer and Public Relations people will only deal with the media, maybe someone at CNET could give them a call or drop them a line about this problem?? I have written to everyone from Mr. Thompson, CEO down to the guy that mows thier lawn and have yet to recieve useful information.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is some product! I've seen it work and save my system from infection again an again. The automatic update works fantastically and I can depend on all the best service and info from both the program itself and the Symantic website. I've had no problems at all. I trust this product.

User Rating: 1/10

Pros:

Cons:

a nightmare to install!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: At all costs, avoid this program. Some software manufacturers seem to delight in creating problems for their customers. This piece of software might be Ok if you have never before used a Symantic product, but if you have any scrap of an old Norton Antivirus or SystemWorks on your system, it will be a never ending nightmare trying to get rid of every scrap of evidence. the new anti virius won't install if you have any hint of previous Symantec product. What kind of programmer produces a product that is not compatbe with his own previous product? Head to the nearest Mcafee antivirus program and kiss Norton GOODBYE!

Instantly cripples your PC.

Pros:

Cons:

inconsistent on new/faster PCs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I work for a university and setup and maintain 50+ PCs. We have used Norton's almost exclusively since it came out. I've started having problems with NAV2002 for the past 6-8 months on new machines running W2K. Problems that persist after a complete wipe and reload of system. There might be a link to system speed; my Dell 4400 works fine, but 2 out of 3 recent Dell 8200 ones don't. No errors on install, but almost exactly a one-minute delay when you try to bring NAV2002 up, or it will start up with autoprotection disabled and will not enable; you get some script error. These have all the W2K and IE6 patches. I'm about to deep6 Norton and switch to McAfee. Anyone else having similar problems?

User Rating: 1/10

A great problem

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's the slowest Anti-virus program I have had ever installed. I recommend all the users to use Mcafee VirusScan which is a lot faster and has more advanced features than comparing to the slowest AV. It deletes the infected file without asking the user and after so many tests performed by our friends, It could clean no infected files but kept on deleting them.. What about if we don't have the backup file? But when we tested Mcafee VirusScan 6 Wow! It was lot faster and could clean every infected files we tested. It's much more faster and is fully compatible with Windows Xp too. I recommend Mcafee VurusScan 6 not Norton Av 2002. Thanks Mcafee for such an Anti-virus Program.

Pretty Good on Win XP Pro

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I used to have ViGuard, AVP and F-Secure. When I move to Win XP Pro only NAV was certified. Then I tried it. I did have any issue like the others concerning the installation , LiveUpdate and memory concern. Everything is just working fine. Actually it uses less memory that the new KAV (alias AVP) or F-Secure and run faster. KAV is excellent but its interface is too heavy and it slows down my computer. F-Secure is nice but it takes too much memory. I rated effectiveness with 3 because it missed 2 virus on my HD. I found them thanks to online scanners. Nevertheless it catched several ones coming by mail. Overall I am pretty satisfied. I will recommend it, just give a try.

CNet has no real clue about antivirus software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Use Nod32 or something that has a Virus Bulletin award. That is what real pros look at. The ability to catch simulated viruses like in the review mean it is NOT working as it is not distinguishing fake viruses from real ones. Norton is a resource hog that will lose you a huge percentage of your system performance and it isn't even the best

My first experience: a flop

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used Norton anitivirus on all my computers in the past 15 years and never had much use for it because I was on a dial-up line and didn't download much from the internet. A month ago I acuired a fast Gateway 700XL and a DSL connection. For the first time I started experimenting with MP3 files and last weekend had beginners bad luck. Not that Norton noticed anything. I sI realized something was wrong because my suferfast machine all of a sudden came to a standstill. A virus scan didn't find anything wrong so I called Gateway's help line. Of course, they didn't help and didn't know what was wrong. Not until three days later, when I read a column in a newspaper, did I realize the computer had been infected with the Benjamin worm. Norton still had not reacted (what is live update for I wonder)until I manually downloaded the latest from symantecs website. Then, the virus was detected, but Norton kindly told me it could NOT be removed!!!! I'm looking around for new antivirus software, although I paid enough for the 2002 Professional Work suite I installed right after I bought the computer which came with basic Norton. BTW: Tech support was busy until they closed, no help there! A huge disappointment.

User Rating: 5/10

Product OK, lousy support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently bought a 1-year renewal subscription of virus definitions for NAV 2000. About 2 months into this, LiveUpdate suddenly stopped working. TechSupport then told me they no longer support 2000, and I must get 2002 (even though they had recently sold me the subscription). I reluctantly upgraded, and had exactly the same problem. Emails to tech support (here in Australia) were unanswered. The only way to contact them was by phone, with 15 minutes waiting to get through. They failed to send promised fixes and when they finally did, these didn't fix anything. I finally demanded (and got) my money back. Later someone told me about the Symantec Knowledge Base. I checked this and instantly found the problem, along with a couple of fixes. Why did TechSupport here not have the wit to look at this themselves, or at least tell me about it? I complained to the manager, and got the usual snow-job reply "my staff are all highly-trained professionals blah blah". Oh yeah? Well here's one customer they won't get back. They don't deserve their dominant position.

still can't get it to install correctly.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a rip - how could it get a good rating? I have the same installation problems almost everyone else does. It won't install if there are previous versions already there. The trick is that you can't get rid of all the files from a previous version. I will never purchase another thing from symantec.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Whatever happened to free definition updates? AntiVirus 2002 prompts (more like nags) you EVERYDAY (per XP user account) to renew your subscription to continue using LiveUpdate. I'm really disappointed that I get more "Subscription Expired" messages than I do "Virus Alerts."

I tried to find solutions and the task of loading will now be a long drawn out process. I reloaded NAV 2001 and got the latest updates and it works just fine. Interfered with other software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It found viruses but we had to remove NAV 2002 from our machines because it was causing other software to crash - If you are using Office and you interrogate databases, you need to switch off the NAV Office plugin because it can interfere with that process. We have since removed NAV and gone to another brand.... no more problems.

Don't even install it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product is a joke, I had it on my PC and I was infected with the Klez within hours. Their solution was to download a removal tool! Isn't it supposed to stop the infection in the first place? By the way, the tool didn't work and it asks you to disable system restore so you can't even restore when their fix it tool fails. Get eTrust Antivirus, which is on my other PC that is running fine. It's inexpensive and effective.

I Love This!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had bought a Compaq Windows XP computer and hadn't but virus protection on it. I ended up with some viruses. I restored the computer to the condition it was when it came out of the box. I then purchased Norton Antivirus 2002. I installed it pretty easily and ran the scan. It only took 11 minutes for 9.5GB of files to scan (that's whats used on my 80GB hard drive.) I love Norton and updated the software by downloading it from LiveUpdate. It took less than 3 minutes for everything on a Cable Modem. My suggestion is to run Norton and then the Windows Defragmenter.

Terrible company to deal with

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was assured that this anti virus program could boot from the CD and remove a boot sector virus. Not so! Email support took three and a half days and was useless. Review: I would like my money back. Two weeks, eight reinstallations, one hard drive reformat and 30 lost hours later. NAV 2002 is still malfunctioning. The error message 'cannot read subscription data, please reinstall NAV' is routinely occurring. The error message 'Norton's was unable to start Email protection' is also routine on startup. Updates of virus definitons fail on every attempt. I have been disabled by the Klez virus twice in two weeks since installation [what virus protection?] Stay tuned for more! Melbourne, Australia

NAV should detect itself as a virus

Pros:

Cons:

Review: NAV was working OK on my new XP Pro system for a few weeks. Then it started causing boot problems. Then it started interfering with other software. Then one of its own LiveUpdates killed it. It APPEARED to be working but was not. I did a complete uninstall and it refused to reinstall. The registry clean up I had to do was a nightmare. NAV2002 should detect itself as a primary virus or worm and kill itself. Hey -- Maybe that's what it did! Buy NOD32 or KAV. You will be MUCH better off in the long run.

It's simply the best there is for XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried Panda and PC-Cillin before buying NAV 2K2. They didn't have the polished look and feel that Norton has, weren't as easy to configure and install, and weren't as easy to deal with (downloaded the full product from the Symantec site within a few seconds pf payment). It installed with no problems and has been running for weeks now without a single hiccup. It also caught a Trojan virus that only launched with an executable and deleted it without giving it a chance to act. I had NAV 2000 and 2001 before and 2002 is better than either. I highly recommend this program if you have a newer PC and Windows XP. By the way, it would have had a 5 rating for all four attributes but I don't like having to subscribe every year for virus updates. After all, that is the reason I bought the software - to be protected. Can you imagine if Word quit writing letters after a year? If I upgrade to a new version with new features, then I don't mind paying...

'Previous Version with CleanSweep ...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: - I believe was the 2001 version, and this 'Norton AntiVirus 2002' are so dynamically different ... It would be like comparing a PitBull to a Pepellion. I went to the 'Symantec' site where I was given an option to let Symantec themselves do a complete system check. - This after a defrag. and the using of 'PC Doctor' - printing the results. I had a massive amount of 'infectious' viruses that were not considered 'dangerous' ... When visiting a 'CriminalOffender' page and visitng a forum ( ... And subsequently, gave a self-proclaimed child molester a piece of my mind. In his messages were two sites listed, where he mentioned "These sites are not necessarily the ones I would condone - unlike ..." Curiosity killed the cat (rushed to see if it was 'that' easy to see it) ... And received this 'JSException' virus. Symantec maintained that I needn't worry, for it was not a malicious virus. But, that is not what their site mentioned a week later! (Not to mention the prompts and alerts I received). And, this whole thing about 'If you do feel you have a virus and know the filename, remove all those files and replace them with more simpler ones ...' -????? No, thanks. My brother has a 120 gig (classical music) computer, used for four years, never caught a virus ... Which leads me to believe what people have mentioned to myself previously. "These companies 'create' these 'viruses' ... Otherwise, they would be out of business.

ho hum on win 98, devastating with RAID

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used Norton exclusively since they first came into existence. I now have two Raid computers - one with WIn98se2V4 and one with Win2000ProSp2. In both machines Norton system works manges to lodge itself into the master boot record. I can't get anti virus out, can't upgrade and can't use it either. Anti virus seems to be the curlpit in both computers. Fortunately Norton Firewall and Crash Guard both function normally. I also have an Athlon thunderbird, also with WIN98se2v4; all of norton products work great in it. I loaded the 2002 version simply to renew my liveupdate registration... 2002 is no different than the previous version. Bottm line, if you want to renew your registration then go for it, if you have a computer even slightly better than off the shelf plain vanillia flored then think long and hard befor you load Symantic anti virus.

Do not get Norton Antivirus!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program is a joke. When I installed it in XP, it screwed up my windows installation, making it impossible to start windows except in the core drivers only mode. The uninstallation claimed to be successful yet left half the files it installed on my system. After another reboot, scandisk detected 36 errors on my HDD, all located where Norton Antivirus installed files. Finally, when I whiped every single Symantic file from my system, my wireless ethernet card no longer worked, because Norton Antivirus had taken the liberty of redirecting traffic through its filter, which was uninstalled without having network settings restored. Now, if this were the only time I had trouble with Norton Antivirus I would not be frustrated enough to post this complaint. However, a few months ago it also messed up windows 98 on my other comp, forcing a defrag of the HDD. This is on top of the fact that a few years ago Norton Antivirus 97 caused my Windows 95 system to be unable to access its cd-rom drive, leading to many hours of frustration before I realized what the problem was and removed this pestilence from my system. My advice is this: DO NOT BUY THIS SOFTWARE. If anything, Symantec should be paying users of their antivirus software to cope with their buggy code.

Great product, but needs to address zipped files.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I find this product, NAV 2002, to be extremely effective, but hope that the next upgrade will address zipped files. Of course, one can always unzip the file and then run Norton, but why not let Norton do this while "holding" the zipped file. As to installation, the "uninstaller" did not work on my old NAV version 5, but the website showed me how to uninstall via a downloadable ".exe" file and a sequence of pictures (yes!) for the remaining removal process. It was steady work but it worked. So, two thumbs up, way up!

Jaybo, I feel your pain ...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: While Symantec states that Norton Anti Virus 2002 Pro is compatible with Windows 2000, to quote Jaybo, "I am here to tell you... NOT! I had to call the computer manufacturer 5-6 times to assist with reformating my hardrive. Symantec support could not make this software useable. The tips they passed did not resolve the problem. Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used this product in each of its flavors for stand-alone systems, email servers, firewalls, and for entire networks with central management. The more you ask of your anti-virus solution, the more Norton needs to be your choice. Also, their automated update mechanism is the cleanest (ease of use, reliability, no colissions with other apps, supports all common communications environments) around and that has been underappreciated in the reviews.

Is 2002 Too User Friendly?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton has been missing the boat for the past several releases of this product..IMHO, 2001 was about the last version that did a good job, reasonably quick and reliably. 2002 is quite simply too CPU intensive, resulting, I think from Symantec trying to get the software to do too much. Until 2002 I was an AVID Norton fan and recommended Norton to all of my customers...now I am examining alternatives...2002 is ok for people who have no experience with anti-virus checkers....but it falls short to those of us more experienced who are looking for reliablity and speed, not necesarily a gooey GUI..Symantec certainly still offers top notch tech support and a reasonably priced anti-virus subscription service...but the product itself is just too slow...don't even get me started on Norton System Works!

Over-rated & Interferes w/ Other Programs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton Antivirus reconfigured my computer and other applications without consulting me during installation. As a result, my computer was slowed down to pre-Pentium speeds. Not only did it slow every click-action, but it also extended openning times for MS Excel and Word by 30 - 60 seconds. Because i have been suspicious of performance of this application, i ran a competitor, InnoculateIT alongside of Norton Antivirus. Performance differences were astounding - especially when you consider that InnoculateIT caught some viruses on my computer, that Norton AV did not. Have upgraded to the successor of InnoculateIT, eTrust AntiVirus (by Computer Associates). I reccommend it highly. It is available for download at http://www.my-etrust.com/. It runs clean and removes viruses, neither of which Norton Antivirus accomplished for me!

bad news bear

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I will not go into details as it would take far too long, but suffice to say my experience with this product was horrible. I now have Panda on my computer and as soon as the eval period is over I intend on purchasing it and others would bewise to follow suit. Get rid of your Norton and for those switching to McAfee do the same. The McAfee product is over rated and is short on long term service and product support as I found out. Purchased one of their "new" virus products only to find out that within less than a month it would not be supported although it was "new". Their answer was to wait until the new version hit the store then buy it or upgrade online at an additional $29.95....interesting. I am convinced that neither of the two "big" companies has a clue about product stability and overall customer service. However there are other products out there that are excellent and it time that they took that into consideration. Panda, Norman, Invircible, PC-cillin and a few others are first rate and do a very good job keeeping your computer safe and without the install problems people experience with the Norton. Maybe, if you can get it installed with no problems or after effects or shock, Norton is better but I am no longer convinced it is. Panda works great and only the annoying reminder that I am in the 30 day eval period is a problem but one I can overlook. Plus all the goodies like Clean Sweep and such in a multi-version utility purchase have also been replaced with individual utilities downloaded from ZDnet or CNet, and funny thing is they all work fine and indeed much better than the Norton utilities they replaced. Take my advice and use something else and give your nerves a break and your computer too.

I don't see any reviews for PC-Cillin 2002! Maybe I shouldn't take CNET's word any more... I also tried McAfee AntiVirus 6.0. What a HORRIBLE experience THAT was!! Pros:

Cons:

McAfee is superior.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used McAfee and Norton for years in both the corporate and home environments. Despite what CNet thinks, Norton is simply not up to par compared to McAfee. McAfee is easier to set-up and use. It is also much more cost effective. Norton requires a subscription to download updates of any type. Although Mcafee uses a subscription model also, you can still download DAT updates for free. Configuring McAfee is a snap and VShield works great for scanning incoming and outgoing email.

Users of MW WORD, BEWARE when upgrading from previous versions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have always depended on and sworn by Norton SystemWorks, even though previous versions of Norton SystemWorks, specifically NSW 2000, had various bugs with Norton AntiVirus and Norton Clean Sweep. However these were manageable by disabling, or working around, certain features. Of course, you then didn't get the benefit of these features, features you had paid for. Norton SystemWorks 2002 has eliminated these bugs, but has introduced a new bug, a WHOPPER, which users of Microsoft Word should know about. BEWARE, NAV 2002 will make your Word files inaccessible. The Symantec tech support pages contain hundreds of people complaining about this exact same problem. Symantec's boilerplate response in every case is to disable the Word plug-in, a new feature in 2002, and if this doesn't work, to exclude certain drives, folders and files from being scanned. Of course they don't specify which drives, folders and files should be excluded. But again, if you disable the plug-in and exclude certain drives, folders, and files from being scanned, you are not getting the features you have paid for. And worse yet, you are opening yourself up to getting a virus in these very same drives, folders, and files. And worst of all, their advice doesn't even work. The only way I found to finally access my Word files again was to completely uninstall Norton AntiVirus, first by using the Windows Install/Uninstall feature, and then by physically going into the registry and manually deleting every single registry key installed there by the program, a long and tedious process. Nortons online tech support was totally useless; they had no suggestions other than the work-around mentioned above that didn't work, and trying to phone them was a joke. I was on hold for two hours and gave up without ever getting anyone to answer the phone. So BEWARE, Word users, before upgrading to 2002, completely eliminate EVERY vestige of previous versions by editing your registry manually. Search Symantecs knowledge base for instructions how to do this. Or stick to older versions. Or get something else. NAV 2002 tech support absolutely sucks.

If it doesn't install right, you're screwed.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For some reason, my software did not make contact with Norton's homepage and now it refuses to update itself. So basically I have a $50 virus checker for anything older than January, 2002. Also, annoying pop-ups reminding me that I have a malfunctioning Norton. Their tech help is awful. They continually direct me to their website FAQ's which are incomprehensible - and I am not a newbie with computers. I say, stay away from Norton. Too much money for the gamble.

Smooth Email & TRUE auto updates!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: 2002 scans email sooo much smoother than 2001! 2002 Live Update is now fully automatic! I have upgraded all my clients to 2002. 2001 got in the way when set to scan email. It slowed the process way down. And it would sometimes hang the email client, especially Eudora. Also I would go into clients and find that the virus definitions were sometimes 1 year out of date! Now I rest assured that my clients can self install and it will be default set to auto background download definitions!

This is well known to users of Symantec's online support; Symantec considers this a feature. The solution: either turn off incoming e-mail scanning or buy Norton Antivirus for servers. Why bother? McAfee is cheaper and works better.

VERSION 2002 FAILS TO INSTALL

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After properly removing version 2001 which ran fine. I tried twice to install version 2002 , both times failing to install due to "scripting errors" and mscrvt.dll (current view)errors. This program will not install due to too much BS built in by Norton. It constantly creates scripting errors try to go online like SPYWARE after the initial install restart. This software SUCKS BIG TIME !

Problems with email scans!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you have a pop3 account and use some type of email program (outlook, eudora, etc...) this is no the antivirus for you. Norton AV apparently tried to apply some new scanning method that actually intercepts the outgoing email after it is processed by outlook (for example), scans it, and then sends it to your isp´s smtp server. Aparently it is all blowing up in their face since it´s causing problems for everybody. Every post in Symantec´s forum refering this problem gets a generic "disable outgoing email scan" answer. Only saw one response saying they were aware of the problem and were working on it. I didn´t have that much of a problem with the installation, as I´ve been reading around in other posts. Personally, I´m going back to NAV 2001... Very Stable!!

What was Symantec Thinking?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have to echo many other reviews here. I tried to insteall AntiVirus 2002 when I migrated from Windows 98 to XP. Multiple attempts to install all failed. There seemed to be an article dealing with this problem on the Symantec web page, the the link to the text of the article is broken. Symantec "technical support" does not reply to requests for help. I've returned to the product to the vendor and bought McAfee

Nightmare installation

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After many frustrating hours of installation and removal I was finally able to remedy the incredibly slow process. However, NAV 2002 now shows my complimentary subscription is 0 days and the subscription data always shows NOT AVAILABLE. I didn't realize I would have to purchase a subscription less than 2 months after buying the program license. A very poor value and considering the problematic installation I don't trust them now to buy a subscription.

Worst install I've ever had

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Tried to get this pile to install and kept getting script errors. I went to their site and went to the knowledge base and what a JOKE! It asked me to upgrade to IE 5.5, then to uninstall and make sure it was completely uninstalled by doing file and registry hacks AND going to Microsoft and downloading a special program to uninstall this garbage. I am not making this up, check Nortons own knowledge base before you buy. BTW this was on a clean install of Win 2k, also I returned this POC and tried McAfee, which was much better.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton does not catch a lot of virus's. Go with Panda Antivirus Titanium. Since installing Panda I have not been infected with another virus. My friend was running Norton and Norton never caught a niminda virus or a trojen virus. The second that Panda was ran. Panda caught every single one and deleted the files.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have NAV 2001, just tried to subscribe for one more year to NAV definitions. They gladly took my $9.95 but I could not get any new definitions. I sent email to tesh support from their website...four days and counting with no answer. I called tech support, ha, I was on hold for 67 minutes before I hung up, and that was at 9:38 a.m. EST. DO NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCT. I am going to eat the $9.95 and buy from McAfee

Can't Shut Computer Down

Pros:

Cons:

Review: With 2002 installed my laptop - Pentum 11 850 running Windows ME 128 ram - won't shut down. I have been on the Symantec web-site. There are articles there indicating that this is a known problem. I have taken it off - for me - a waste of money.

DON'T DO IT

Pros:

Cons:

Review: NAV 2002 has major issues that the company has failed to address. While I experienced no installation problems, I quickly found that NAV caused significant boot up issues with other programs (my previous version of NAV worked just fine). In addition, I found that monitor power saving causes system lock ups. Even use of a simple screen saver occasionally suffers the same ugly fate. Norton's own tech support people acknowledge the problem but say they have no idea if/when the issue will be resolved. If you run your system "always on," you're in for plenty of ugly restarts and precious little help from Norton.

Lacking Key Features

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Maybe the editors don't love McAfee, but after years of using it, I decided to try the competition because the reviewers seem to think Norton is a better antivirus program. Well, maybe. It isn't hard to use and I am sure it is fine for antivirus protection, but it needs more than that to be worthy. McAfee, of course, has issues with Windows but it has features Norton doesn't think users need. For one, Norton doesn't scan email attachments - you have to do it manually. McAfee can do it on the fly. For two, Norton doesn't examine files being downloaded from the internet via a download manager (such as GetRight). Again, McAfee does that. For four, Norton wants to charge for virus definitions updates after year 1. McAfee is free. For five, the paging through the website for tech support is awful and tedious, just to get to where you can post a question. McAfee has a live chat for realtime support from a technician (you can't beat that - no nightmarish phone menus to suffer through), for six, and this is an independent problem, Norton doesn't time the how long system scans run. A timer would be very handy, so you can work around the scanning process. That process is CPU-ntensive, especially on an older, slower computer. So, overall, Norton is an OK program, but CNET needs a new reviewer.

Pros:

Cons:

Better than anything out there

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have not had a problem installing NAV2002 on any Windows platform after WIN98. I have not had any virus infections on any PC, depsite repeated forced attempts with even new virii for which Symantec did not have "new definitions" released yet. Take a clue - get the product and learn to use your PC before you go throwing software at it. You had to learn to drive and where the gass went before you could use a car on your own for more than a few days.

LiveUpdate fails; no tech support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: LiveUpdate simply says I have no Symantec products installed. Exact same problem I had with the 2000 version -- Symantec denied such a problem existed then, and you still can't find it in the knowledge base. Their customer support site is down this entire weekend -- that's right, you can't even *submit* a question which would take (by their estimate) 4 days to respond to. This smells of a company going down the tubes. Sad, because I really like NAV and the other Norton products I've used.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had a horrible time installing NAV 2002 on a very clean WIN 98se machine. I have been to their support site for instructions with installations problems. I have followed their elaborate instructions that nobody buying new software should have to go through. After installing and uninstalling twice, scaning a large harddrive for errors (there were none) I went to their site to find a long list describing to uninstall, then download update files, then go into the CD to install certain components only, then modify CONFIG.SYS files. CRAZY! I need virus protection, but the cure is worse than the illness.

The Symantec help site has things like "We have seen cases where upgrading to or reinstalling IE version 5.5 fixes the problem." This is a joke. This product does not work! Symantec Tech Support BITES!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: NAV 2002 is a great product. The company does not deserve to sell one copy of it because of their absolutely disgraceful technical support, which is simply inexcusable. NAV 2002 screwed up my Windows Installer. First, I spent hours trying to get more than a busy signal (tech support is only open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m PST), then the interminable voicemail menus which told me it would cost $29.95 for me to speak with a tech (have your credit card ready), and then I waited for more than an hour. Shame on you, Symantec for turning your back on your customers once the sale is made. Despicable.

Death by scripting error

Pros:

Cons:

Review: NAV 2002 worked fine as an OEM install on my Dell Pentium IV running XP Home Edition--for all of two months. Now it's crippled by Internet Explorer scripting errors, and none of the complex (and sometimes a bit contradictory) fixes on Symantec's tech support board have restored its functionality. There are many similar user complaints at Symantec's Web site. Tying the UI to a Web browser was an act of self-sabotage by Symantec, in my opinion. I am without anti-virus protection now and am trying to decide what to try next.

The 1# and only effective virus killer!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Hi! I have been using McAfee VirusScan for years and I have been satisfied with it because of the free virus definitions and it's ability to tackle the viruses I purposely threw at it once when i inserted and infected disk, it also protected me from trojan horses from the net. Then i tried NAV 2002, i liked it much better than McAfee. Why? Because: *It was not a memory hugger like McAfee *When my pc caught the dlder trojan horse and w95.cih virus (chennobyl & spacefiller) NAV 2002 immediately notified me and removed the viruses automatically without me having to do nothing. *It had all the features of McAfee and more! I appreciated the script blocking feature! *I NEVER once had to manually download the updates and definitions for the program because it updated itself automatically whenever i was only, McAfee however always gave me error messages when it tried to do this. Also, i did the EICAR virus test and these are the results I got: MCAFEE: EICAR: Was found and the entire program was deleted. NORTON: EICAR: Was found and only the virus code was deleted but the program survived! This shows that Norton is better than McAfee at cleaning the viruses! I am very proud of my NAV 2002! *It had a very easy to follow interface. *It's well known in the industry

tied into MS IE, just BAD

Pros:

Cons:

Review: it appears that you can not use the 'Full System Scan' feature of this product unless you have updated to MS IE 5.5 or 6.0. WHY do the AV software packages now tie themselves in with a browser? Do I need to be online to scan? Do I NEED to have a browser that I will never use installed on my system in order to use my AV software? Apparently, Symantec thinks so. Other than that, it's been pretty effective. It's caught 2 virii that were mailed to a webmaster acocunt that I maintain. The self-help web site is bottom of the barrel however. There's no easy way for the users they 'dumbed down' for to actually pose a question.

STICK WITH VERSION 2001!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I agree with SmokeyJoe that "Installation is a problem" Installation does stop if you have any previous version on your pc. The software should have a program to clean out any previous versions. I also upgraded to NAV 2002 for the simple reasoning that newer is better. This is NOT true. I liked the 2001 interface alot better as well. Someone said that it didnt slow their pc down? Well it sure slowed down mine, and I noticed that right away compared to version 2001 which didn't. All of a sudden I felt like I was on version 2000 which also slowed my pc down. At least 2001 didnt do that at least. Cons: For some strange reason, NAV2002 doesn't show scanning progress (percents) so you can't tell when the scan will end, that part is also true. Other then the minor upgrades, 2001 you were still the better version.....

The AntiVirus you will never know you have

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton AntiVirus 2001 is good. Norton AntiVirus 2002 is better. Why? It has a clean and simple interface (as in NAV2001, though it is a bit nicer); the LiveUpdate feature is a must have; it doesn't mess with your e-mail settings; and the best thing, it doesn't takes memory like NAV2001. Buttom line: Pros- Doesn't slow down your computer. Doesn't takes a lot of memory. You just don't notice it. Cons: For some strange reason, NAV2002 doesn't show scanning progress (percents) so you can't tell when the scan will end. Scanning outgoing messages dialog-box can't be minimized by default.

McAfee customer left out to dry; saved by Symantec

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tested this product when it was in beta and having been a long-time McAfee user, I wasn't too impressed. But then I tried McAfee's latest monst--err, creation, VirusScan 6 (see my review), and saw how much they messed it up, so I uninstalled it and switched to Norton AV 2002. Symantec's scanner works well in XP, unlike McAfee's. Symantec tested its product thoroughly and put a stable piece of software on the shelves; McAfee decided to charge its customers for beta software. NAV 2002 could offer the user a bit more control over settings, but at least they're easier to access than they are in VS 6. BOTTOM LINE: Nothing too impressive, but at least it works well--and that's what matters most.

upgrading is a headache ..

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As Smokey said, if you have a previous version installed, in my case, NAV 2001, no matter how many times you uninstall it, there are still "body parts" scattered in the hard drive and the registry. After paying an additional $30 for a call to their support line, I was e-mailed a tiny program to completetly delete any traces of NAV 2001 from my computer before I was able to install NAV 2002. That two minute $30 telephone call cost me an additional $30 added to the cost of NAV 2002 when a conscientious company would have provided that assistance for free. I guess everyone is pulled into this added expense. They really need to improve the software to where you may simply upgrade from previous versions. That excluded, (Norton Systemworks) is an excellent package.

Tough install - very unforgiving

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton Internet Security 2002 is a tough install, and is very unforgiving. Be sure and delete any old copy of any Norton AV product. If not install will not only fail, but prevent deletion of the partial install. You must then use the XP Restore feature (which BTW works wonderfully). Then you must uninstall the old copy. Reloading did not go well. Getting the virus files may have failed. And there is some script running problem. Havent got it working yet. But FW is up, and I like the outgoing TCP/IP traffic monitoring of the FW.

Review: I do tech service over the phone and the #1 problem with correcting email settings was how 2001 edited the pop settings. With 2002, its all done in background and doesn't edit the settings.

If you have XP - expect installation problems

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just check Symantec's newsgroups bulletins - obviously Symantec released this product way before it was read - so they could be the 'first' av product for XP launch - pathetic. Unless you like beta testing go with something else for XP

No email protection, too many conflicts

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Since installation I had many consults with their tech support to start email protection. After many days of messages and hours trying to solve system conflicts, it still doesn't work. I wouldn't reccomend updating from NAV 2001.

Top of the line; yet needs one more feature

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used Norton AntiVirus 2002 for a month or so. It is very effective, and yet very easy to use. The only problem I have is that it won't scan downloaded programs and files from the internet automatically. This feature is one that I would like to see in future versions. But this is still a must have program for active computer users

DOES NOT WORK!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tried to uninstall an older version of Norton anti-virus and install the new Norton AntiVirus 2002. After I tried to reboot, Windows would NOT load!!! Not even in safe mode!! I had to format my hard drive and re-install everything. I'd rather have the virus, thanks!

Definitely not memory intensive.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I switched from McAfee to this product because MAV was robbing my system of performance. Although it seemed to work pretty well, it was slowing my computer down. When I installed NAV 2002 it was like night and day. I got performance back as well as an easier user interface. This was well worth the $40.00 investment.

Only The Best!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Come on. There is nothing wrong with this program. It's easy to use and update and it does everything you need it to. You don't really need it to scan ZIP files because once the file is unzipped, Norton will detect it and tell you that you're putting an infected file onto your system. I have never gotten a virus before, though. So I don't really know how well it does, heh. I have had times where IE downloaded javascripts that are infected from a website and it stopped that.

Top anti-virus program.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had just installed NAV 2002 and when I went on line a few hours later NAV had intercepted the Minda virus and repaired the file. I had no problems after that. I feel that with their great support and effective technical support they are and always will be the top ranking Anti-Virus and system repair software venders throughtout the computer industry.

Prevents email viruses

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Set it up, and it does everything I want it to do, all automatically. System scans take a long time, but they can be scheduled so who cares. Warned me that an incoming email was infected before it could be opened, what more do you need! Maybe I am wrong, but Winzip can be configured in its setup to use 2002 to scan for viruses, or any antivirus program for that matter.

Great protection; easy to use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my first crack at personal virus protection software. It installed without a hitch and has run without problems. During installation NAV found several infected files on my harddrive and cleaned them all immediately. And the Live Update feature is GREAT. i wouldn't have known it happened if NAV hadn't told me. All in all, good stuff.

A lot POP3 errors for Outlook Express

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great product the the above PC user, but aweful for the regular Johns. We are an ISP and constantly get POP3 not found errors related to NAV. NAV replaces the incoming POP3 server with pop3.norton.antivirus forcing the POP3 clients to go NAV then NAV will go get email. If NAV is disabled, damaged or removed then dummies get the POP3 error and think it's the ISP.

The best anti-virus software i've used!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It is very easy to use, the interface is similar to NAV 2001. If you have Win XP this is a must have.

Causes errors in other programs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I get "This program caused errors and will be closed" from other programs after installing Norton AntiVirus 2002.

Works with with Win XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I first tried using Panda w/XP but had shut down problems. NAV has worked from day one with no problems. The set up is easy and the interface simple to use

Great for Windows XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Curently the very best Antivirus program for Windows XP. Not only does it fit right into the XP theme (not all that important, but still...), it quickly and thoroughly scans hard drives and automatically checks for update (if you let it). The whole thing runs in the background and you even know it, due to its lower use of system resources. But for users of NAV 2001 and non XP, it isn't worth the price of admission due to a lack of new features. Great.

Not XP approved !

Pros:

Cons:

Review: NAV 2002 doesnt do the job with windows xp. When i boot my pc (amd 1.2 GHz 768 ram) i've got to wait a whole minute(!) for my virus protection meanwhile i cant do anything else because my start menu freezes. This is surely not what i expected from a Norton product. I'm thinking about switching over to Panda Anti-virus.

Lots of problems..

Pros:

Cons:

Review: - Soundblaster error at win-startup. - Took about 3-4 seconds longer to load a website. - Took quite a bit of my memory (64 MB). - Windows shutdown-picture totally screwed. - No daily updates. Now i use my old but FREE InoculateIT AV, and everything works perfect! System: AMD K6 200@225 64 MB SDRAM WIN 98 SE

The best period

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a computer tech and have seen computers with mcafee, innoculate, and avg miss viruses or have been unable to repair that nortons detected and fixed. The only problem installing norton antivirus 2002 is uninstalling mcaffee's first.

Smooth install-corrections to others below

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My install went smoothly on Win98SE; I uninstalled NAV 2000 prior to install of NAV 2002. To correct people below: 1) NAV 2002, unlike 2000, does NOT change mail settings. It apparently watches for TCP/IP connections and traps email for scanning that way. 2) NAV 2002 DOES work on Win98; Win95 support is dropped, but NAV 2001 is included if you have a Win95 machine still.

Virii walk right through it

Best Norton Anti Virus Yet!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used Norton for 8 years now and this one outshines them all. It's autoupdate is transparent to the user making it even easier to use than previous versions.

Windows 95 support dropped!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been a big fan of Norton's products for years. I currently have System Works Pro, Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus all running my on Windows 95 machines. But the biggest problems I found when looking at all the new Norton 2002 products is that they no longer supporting Windows 95 and 98. You need Windows ME at least, which I find to be a big disappointment. So you'll need to the update the Specs for all Norton 2002 products and remove Windows 95 under the System Requirements for Operating System

Nortons always been my choice...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm always amazed how so many people have trouble with an almost trouble free product...the software installation problem posted here is probably due more to the posters actual machine itself, i.e.: it's configuration and more than likely the quality of it's components...not to mention the operating system used. As a hardware tech and software writer for the past 12 years, I can honestly say that this new so called " upgrade" is much more than that? It?s stable and a lot more trouble free that it's predecessor or any of its competition for that matter. It?s true that it barely uses system resources?and that?s a major ?good thing?, it?s untrue however that it?s predecessor 2001 was a memory hog (hugger?). McAfee does indeed scan zip files but it does not have a completely accurate track record doing it, and most people with enough computer skills to be able to zip, unzip, and run an executable program from a utility like WinZip should surely be savvy enough to know to scan the files once they are unzipped?especially if they are believed to have come from a questionable source. By the way?I?ve been running it on a 1GHz AMD notebook running Windows XP RC2 and it has performed flawlessly. It is the only Antivirus software that I?ve found that does not conflict with XP and I believe it is the only one certified for it. And yes, Windows XP is incredibly stable. You WILL want to upgrade when it becomes available retail?as good if not better than my beloved Windows 2000 was. This one is worth the upgrade price.

OK as long as your never try to upgrade your subscription online

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Norton is probably the worst company around for customer service. I emailed a problem to them - they finally got back to me days later with the suggestion to call their toll-free number. I tried to do this about 10 times - the lines are always busy. Apparently, lots of people are having the same trouble I am having! Don't get suckered into their crazy-making customer service channels....

The Best others are Memory Hogs!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have tried other antivirus software products. Norton is truly the best. The other antivirus products hog memory and their customer service sticks.

Finally, Finally not a memory Hugger

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Finally the best Anti-virus software is not a memory hugger, i thought i was dreaming when i install it and it did not hugged my memory like 2000 and 2001 the price high..yet but worth it if your computer uses NAV and it suffers from memory loss. This version will heal a virus and it wont even bother you while you work..i have to say that it scans all files in your hardrive by default not just the top files like other Anti-virus software..it took 7 minutes 36 seconds to scan 21.056 files..i Have A ADT Pentium II 350 MHZ MMX with 64 Meg Of Ram. You have 2 options buy it pay the high cost but get the best in the market and now no memory hugger or try some one else..your Choice..I am keeping it.
