Only Fools ever have issues with NAV 10by websterphreaky - August 5, 2005
Pros: Great improvement, thorough, easy to use, the Best for Mac OS X
Cons: Not a single one, maybe to complicated for BLOCK HEADS
Review: This was a great step forward for Norton AV and it shows in every step of it's daily use. The new windows are thoughtfully designed for ease of use and users understanding of any procedure.
Mac OS X is NOT as safe as the Apple Kool Aid Drinkers want casual users to think. Macs are a target of virus writers that use Macs as "carriers" to infect Windows systems on networks. It might be your office Windows computers, it just might be your Dad, Moms or friends Windows box.

Slow with Virus Definitions-A Disaster!!!by - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The folks at Norton are ASLEEP!!! I download new definitions every day and always have auto protect on. But both my computer at home and here at work carried the W32.Jeefo virus for a month, even though I ran virus scans regularly and had auto-protect on. Norton's definition of the W32.Jeefo virus didn't come out until 6/3. McAfee had this virus definition on May 7th!!! By then, when I ran the scan, every file the virus had gotten into during the month that they didn't alert me was destroyed when the file was supposedly "fixed" during the virus scan. That was over 800 files on my computer at home, 400 or more at work. I didn't lose documents(Thank God), and the W2K I run on my work computer seems okay, but XP Professional took a hit at home. After trying to fix it for three days I ended up having to reinstall XP and the 65 updates it has now, as well as around 50 programs. I had to reinstall many programs at work as well. You would think Norton would at least check the definitions their competition has come up with. NOT!!! Norton is NOT reliable!!! Be afraid, be very afraid.

no antivirus for me anymore?by - April 16, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: after installing nis2003/nav2003 yesterday ive restarted my computer over fifteen times. whenever a program tries access to net, a window jams on screen. i quess it tries to ask me whether permit it to net. amd2200+ with 1g dual-ddr 400mhz shouldnt lag when a window pops up! okay, so the firewall stinks, so the antivirus has to be perfect? perhaps, never got the chance to try it as my patience wore down. i downloaded mcafee's virusscan 7 or whatever its called, but i never got to install it thanks to symantec's 'marvellous' uninstalling system. the usual uninstall never worked, so i was forced to download Rnav2003 (ever seen a program that requires a program to uninstall itself?). this is where the fun started. i consider myself pretty handy on computers, but nav2003 is still in there somewhere. i've cleaned my registry three times so far from anything that has got to do with 'norton', 'antivirus' and 'symantec' with jv16 power tools, ran rnav2003 couple of times, restarted my computer _many_ times and still mcafee says there's norton antivirus in my computer. i'm not amused anymore. it's like microsoft said 'you cant uninstall iexplorer or media player cause you do not have to', which was cheating and lying and horrible marketing. has somebody from MS moved to symantec?

Now I have tried over 8 of the on-line fixes. All of them took about an 30-60 minutes each. None worked but all managed to generate different error messages from the Windows XP install. I have spent way, way too much of my time on trying to get this program working. I do not recommend it until the install shapes up.

You need to download a special program from the Norton site to uninstall and then delete some stuff from the Registry. 3. If you click on any of the links that come up with error messages in the program the computer simply reboots. 4. It seems to have problems if you have more than one user profile on Windows XP. I struggled for more than 3 days (with frequent visits to the Norton site) to get it to work properly without any luck. I'm asking my money back and cannot recommend this program to anyone using XP

Haven't used this product yetby - March 26, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: but reading over all the comments here troubles me that people think a product stinks because it takes up so many resources when scanning. Um, when you scan the harddrive don't do anything else. Further, active scanning goes on in the background at all times (unless you disabled it) and the only thing you need unless you know that something is wrong with your computer and it might be a virus. An intial scan of the hard drive to check it and after new definitions are downloaded are the only times I would think of forcing a scan of the hard drive (or things are acting very strange on a PC). Oh well that's my 2 cents. Yes I have had problems with Norton's (install/uninstall and detection of unknown viruses) but I have had problems with other AV software as well and Norton's had been the savior that actually detected and removed viruses for me. I guess it is all just a rat race to who gets the definition out there first and can claim it stops this while others do not. I never use AV software on my home PCs. I only need it for employees that do not scrutinize their email and websites they visit to download from.

One of the best software investments you can makeby - March 4, 2003

I had NO installation issues, have seen NO significant performance hits. Yes, when the program runs a full scan it hogs the processor and you can't do anything else. But schedule your full scan for 1 AM and let NAV auto-repair. I do wish NAV scanned ZIP files when being downloaded or transferred rather than when extracted. But that's a trivial complaint. The interface is clean and simple. The default settings are great for most installations. The automatic Live Update feature keeps teh antivirus signature files up-to-date without the need for any user intervention. So, if you share files, use IM or email or you are out on the web, get NAV 2003.

So, if you do not have the Indexing service installed, it has minimal impact on system performance and is a great AV program.

Review: Crashes when running video files at file SYMEvnt. I worked with tech support with no joy. System slowed down to a crawl when not crashing. Hard drive would be busy doing, whatever, at times. Just like a virus. Got rid of it, and all is fine. Read the reviews, I wish I had. Something there isn't playing well with others!!

Good product overallby - February 12, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: You guys just look like kids. "In my computer Norton crashed...", "In my PC it slows down...” In MY, MY, MY… If you install this software in various (say 100) different home/office systems, you will notice that Norton deserves a good overall rate. I'm not biased at Symantec or whatever company. If McAfee is better, I use it, if not I use the best at the moment. I've changed many times from these companies. McAfee is very good at repairing files affected while Norton just deletes some important files. However, McAfee does not catch as much viruses as Norton and you can see the computer hang in real time scans. I’m telling about using these softwares at the extreme minimum requirements. Put it up on brand new PCs and the results are better but not amazing. You can feel the same slow downs. Install several Antivirus solutions on many machines ranging from the minimum specs to the high-end ones and you will note that the effectiveness of Norton is slightly better. Yeah, the support really sucks and the scan time is slow. Moreover, when you right-click on a file, it takes years to show the menu up. But the high virus catch rate and daily updates compensate it. So, just try the free version on many PCs and make a decent, professional opinion instead of blaming McAfee, Norton, or whatever in the first use.

Better than Mcafee or PC-Cillin with stopping virusesby - February 3, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I currently use all three AV software programs. My main, cheerished computer has Norton 2003(Because I love my machine), and the other AV programs are on my old computers. I have seen the difference with Norton vs its competition and would stay with Norton AV. Also, the Norton firewall is very good, just need to have a good amount of memory to run full time.

Symantec Got Greedyby - January 26, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Used Norton's stuff since DOS. It works well on my systems (Win 98, ME & XP Home). However, since 2001 virus renewals have shot up from $3.95 annually to $24.95. Tech support is inadequate, ineffective, painful and slow (definitely not of the old Norton caliber), and the free online support is slowly disappearing in lieu of paid support. Bottom line, Symantec is providing less product and support while charging more for both. Time to look elsewhere. I don’t support greed.

Stay up with the timesby - January 21, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Why are people using NAV 2003 with Windows 98/ME and other past operating systems? Stick with the AV program that came with your system or buy something you know works like NAV 2000 ($2.00 on Ebay). We all know Win98 and older OSes are unstable so don't be shocked when NAV hoses them up more. I'm not saying to go out and purchase M$'s newest OS (not when you can just download it for free) but new software and outdated software usually don't play well together. And for you AOL users, use a different ISP! Nobody wants to work with AOL's proprietary software, including Symantec. AOL needs to come out with their own garbage AV program to go along with their garbage email client. And for those of you who want to multi-task while NAV is scannig your machine, just don't do it. Let it run when you go to bed or something. And if you don't like all the problems it gives you a month after it's release then wait a few months until the bugs are worked out or you WILL have problems, ALL software has bugs when it's released, thats' the way it goes. I agree that Symantec's tech support is horrid and it's not fair that NAV 2003 gives people problems but what software doesn't? Look at any AV reviews and you'll more than NAV 2003 has. This is excellent software when used the right way and when compared to reviews of similar products.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: Dear people, BEWARE!!! I was quietly surfing the net, looking for some info on computer parts. When trying to open a tech. spec. file in Word-format Noron 'detected' a script-virus. So, I thought "Clicking OK should do it for now" Well, you know what: system hung and as I rebooted I remembered I was working on another text file in Word. Usually Word will recover most of the file when a "Blue Screen of Death" crosses your path, but in this case it didn't. This wasn't the best part yet: immediatly after rebooting I got a registry error from Windows, asking me to restore a previous copy. Okay, not all that bad you think, but now it turns out I CAN'T UNINSTAAL NORTON USING THE UNINSTALLER ANYMORE!!! Ahrggg, thanks a lot, ANTI-virus morans...

Have not been able to troubleshoot were it got clobbered. Everytime I start my PC (XP Pro), it recovers my registry from a corrupted file. I've been through this nonsense twice. Greatest Antivirus Software!by - December 17, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I have been using McAfee VirusScan 5.21 for a long time and I trusted it very much. It scans downloaded files before download and system scans are fast. VShield protected me from all the viruses and I admired the free updates. It was just so perfect. Recently, I upgraded my computer to Windows XP and that version of McAfee VirusScan wasn't compatible with Windows XP. I had to uninstall it. But there was a fatal error and I was frustrated. I had to do manual uninstall to completely remove it from my the system. I tried using McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 for a while but system scan was such a lazy thing after I updated the Virus Definition Files (DAT). I tried using McAfee VirusScan 7 demo but there was another problem. That's when I turned to Norton Antivirus. It was the most perfect antivirus software! It has comprehensive features and great auto-protect. It even had the Bloodhound heuristics that can protect my computer from new viruses! It included everything including quarantine. I loved LiveUpdate. It updates everything. I even had 381 days of subscription days! I like paying about $3 each year for updates because it's the inexpensive way to perfection. I love Norton Antivirus 2003. I used to like Mcafee and didn't like Norotn but now I have tried both AV softwares and now I declare that Norton Antivirus is better than McAfee VirusScan!

Want to play games? Do NOT install this!by - December 7, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I've been a long user of Norton's products and I was very much anticipating the 2003 version of Antivirus. I installed it on my Windows XP Professional and everything seemed dandy. That was until I started my favorite game Global Operations and Unreal Tournament 2003. I've had 70+ FPS in both games with all details maxed out. Suddently, after installing Norton Antivirus 2003, the games become EXTREMELY choppy and stutters like hell. I wonder what it was and I recalled I had not installed anything but Norton Antivirus 2003. So I deleted it, restarted the computer and voilà - everything was smooth again. Nope, I'll wait for a MAJOR patch to fix this. In the mean time, I'll go back to 2002.

Major Upgrade Headacheby - December 6, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I am a long time Norton user and have always been happy with it. As I was planning to upgrade my computer to Windows XP from Windows 98SE, I did my research and found that I needed to upgrade my Norton AV2001 to the latest version. I did that prior to the upgrade to XP, but had so many problems and so little help from Symantec. The upgrade wouldn't function and I thought it was Windows fault, so I called Microsoft. They were real helpful and helped me get my system up and running again, after completely erasing any mention of Symantec products and deleting registry keys. Very poor design. It is much slower than the older versions and not as customizable. I do like the scanning of outgoing mail and it does catch any incoming viruses, but if I had to do it over again I may have tried a different product.

The Best Antivirus Software On Earthby - December 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Friends, beginners, Programmers...please obtain this Antivirus software for which you won't feel sorry for yourself.I tried Macfee,Panda etc and all i could find in common is that they can't detect the hidden virus.I tested files for myself in which each were infected with some virus and came to a conclusion that NAV 2003 can detect all viruses and clean them....infact quarantine them. But the other Antivirus softwares....sucks... ! Installed NAV 2003 on Win XP/Win ME/Win 98/Win Pro and guess what..the results are prefect and working..So my last advice for a better protection against viruses is to obtain a Antivirus Software by name which rules...that is ofcourse is Norton Antivurs 2003

I've had enough Nortonby - December 2, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: With about 50 individual computers to monitor, all running Norton, I've had enough with the latest versions. We've tried downloading new software, which didn't work. We went out and bought Norton 2003 Professional Antivirus, and incoming email protection needs to be disabled in order to receive email. No help from Norton, and we refuse to pay for telephone support. There is no need for this. So in the end, I'm looking intently at other antivirus software packages so when subscriptions expire, I will begin the switch. Maybe it's time Norton stops with all the "bells and whistles" and gets back to good old common, every day programming that is released without the glitches.

Review: I have been NOD32 user for years, and recently had to do a college IT assignment on Anti-Virus solutions. I decided to include, in the range of four products, 'Norton AntiVirus', I was surprised and most dissapointed at the sheer length of time it took to scan and check the system .... and the resources it used up on WIN98, 2000 and XP were very high compared to NOD and E-scan (another program tested by me). I decided to have a look at NOD's website, WOW..... it seems that C-Net loves to trash NOD ??? I think all interested users should go to NOD's site and do some REAL reading !!

Pros:
Cons:
Review: Sym should test & finish their products before they start selling it. E-mail scanning causes probs in combination with a dial-up internet account because Outlook (Express) hangs up before NAV has scanned the attachment. Furthermore Symantec (at least, here in the Netherlands) can almost not be contacted by phone, and if you finaly succeed somehow, you get stupid answers. The program is Ok, if it works and if you configure it right. Symantec sucks big time. They behave a bit like MS, I think.

NAV 2003 + later DirectX update is a no-no!by - November 12, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I had NAV 2003 installed, (on a recently wiped and reconfigured PC), and then installed a "Reader Rabbit" package for my son. This insisted on installing DirectX (7 ?). Everything is OK until the next reboot, when NAV says that it settings have been changed, possibly by a virus, and tells me I should reboot. There follows an endless loop I can only exit by deinstalling NAV (long job). After several reloads of WinME from a CDROM image, and checking my laptop, I found out that these problems can be solved by updating to DirectX 8.1 before installing either of NAV or Reader Rabbit. Apart from this, I'm very happy so far.

Administrators' nightmareby - October 17, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: By default, NAV does not allow WIN2K domain users with restricted access rights to install updates. Hence, domain users with notebook PCs cannot update their virus definitions while on the road. It is also not practical to give these users administrative rights. It is an administrators' nightmare to tweak NAV default settings for all those road warriors so that their notebook PCs can update virus definitions with domain users rights.

Installed this and DirectX games stopped workingby - October 10, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I installed Norton AntiVirus 2003 as part of Norton Internet Security 2003 and immediately noticed that I could not get any fullscreen DirectX/Direct3D programs to run. They would always minimize. I could run a game if I switched my desktop resolution and color depth to match what the game used but that was annoying. I could also kill ccApp.exe but that broke both NAV and Norton Firewall. Finally I just uninstalled NAV 2003 and went back to NAV 2002 and all was well. Do not get this product, its not worth the hassle.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I downloaded from their website prepaid. did the smooth install. went back online ,got the latest update. ran a scan , found the old quarintine file with 7 klezH copies in it. it had slipped thru the 2000 and I. I fired it up after the fact. klez ate it. this is supposed to nail it. the trial copy I had did. It defaulted to auto update and about 1/2 hour into running it my firewall prompted me for update for 2003. yes i clicked. I checked the traffic log on my sygate pro, it didn't go to norton. It was trying to download a dialer from a X site. No more auto update. I recorded and submitted that. zilch so far. the client sharing thing it runs, and all the data it logs makes it slow. It goes to sleep(auto protect off) a string of 50 emails overloadsit. it shorts out with an error message. Im not sure if refunds are available with a downloaded product or an upgrade. I fought the klez myself. that was fun but it wrecked my sword for a while. slow is better than that.

The best AntiVirus programby - October 6, 2002
Pros:

Review: Norton AV 2003 (and 2002) is the best antivirus program ever made. Just the last few days, since Bugbear appeared, I've recommended this to a lot of people. Some of them used Kaspersky but bought AV2003 as soon as they realized that Kaspersky couldn't help them. You can always try the trial version before buying it, but I'm quite sure that you will like it

Messes with the registry on Windows 98by - October 6, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: On installation, an error: "A settings violation has been detected. The security settings have been tampered with...(1004,1)." Norton's website solutions include (1) restarting or (2) editing the registry. Also, clean booting, deleting temp files. None work; the error message still appears. After many e-mails to customer support, Norton finally admitted there is a bug in the program and no solution. Many users have the same complaint on Norton's website, but customer support keeps referring them to the same two solutions--and endless cycle of problems. I had to return the program to the store and now my registry is screwed up, even after restoring it to the original backed up copy. It keeps referring to Norton driver files, and the program is already uninstalled from my machine. I have used Norton for many years, so I am shocked by this experience. I bought McAfee and it installed with no problem at all.

Cnet should change its name to Symantecby - October 2, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The reviews are always bias for Symantec products. Although you rate Mcafee editor's choice you give it the same 8 of 10 as Norton. All other products are cut up and you continue to recommend Norton. I smell complete bias, bias, and bias and this is why Symantec's update service is with CNET. Its time you compared apples to apples. People advertising and editorials are not separate. Reviews are alias for propaganda.

Slow scanning, discontinued virus supportby - September 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Norton AV 2003's scanner is now so very slow that it is almost unuseable. Who has so much time available to do such a time consuming scan? Lack of new features is apalling, especially for AOL users like myself. Worst of all, Symantec recently discontinued their excellent online Virus Help Support Forum, and now offer no online help at all in removing viruses! And the phone support fee for help with virus problems is an outrageous $69.95, NOT the $29 fee that you mention in your review. Product quality and especially service from Symantec are clearly going downhill. I can no longer recommend using any Symantec software.

BEST AV Scanner Ever!by - September 20, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Norton AntiVirus aka NAV 2003 is much more intuitive than previous versions and has many useful options that really bring out the value of the product. However most customer do not realize they need those extra bells and whistles. NAV 2003 by itself with all options turned off except the AutoProtect feature will protect from any avenue a virus may use to try to infect your computer. By all means this product is better than all of the others as well as it has fantastic onlien support that is FREE. The price is very reasonable compared to the valuable proprietary information it protects from viruses. I beleive that NAV 2003 is far supperior to this years Editors Choice Award and that the consumers will realize that!

I do however work for an independent consumer action group and will be checking to see if my comment is indeed posted within "two to four business days" as stated in CNET's guidelines. NAV does "NIL" to protect the common internet user (Since most are on AOL)!!!by - August 31, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: NAV 2003, 2002, and all of it's predecessors do not do a single thing to benefit "AOL" users, except for being able to scan a file that has already been downloaded... The NAV people really ought to put some thought into making this program "able" to scan "AOL e-mail" and activity!!! I bought the 2002 version last year (thinking I was protecting myself) only to find that NAV doesn't support AOL in any way, shape, or form!!! It was a waste of my money, and the "2003" version does no more for AOL customers than it's predecessors! I have no more protection now, than I did prior to purchase of a "Norton" product... I do not recommend the purchase of this this program to the vast majority of american internet users, since 2 thirds of them are using "AOL", and Norton Anti-Virus has nothing to offer to an AOL user as far as "internet protection" is concerned!!! I would like my disk-space, and my money back!!!

Works alright, but....by - August 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: It is a very large program that uses large amounts of system resources. Kaspersky Anti-Virus (AVP) is much faster, in my experience, more reliable, and uses far fewer system resources. I run some heavy numbers crunching applications on my system, so system resources are always at a premium. I do not allow anti-virus systems to run all the time, I scan only after I download items. I also do not use programs that allow viruses to automatically install on my system, such as IE and Outlook. AVP loads 5 times faster than Norton. Norton is #1 for only 1 reason, they spend big money advertising. AVP is the way to go.

Company is VERY fast at responding to new virus'by - August 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Probably one of the most important and overlooked feature of a Virus Checker is how quickly the company responds when a new virus is released. A new virus can travel the globe and get to your computer in minutes. If you don't have an updated virus definition then you could easily get infected. Symantec, the makers of Norton AntiVirus, is DEFINITLY one of the FASTEST AND MOST RESPONSIVE COMPANIES OUT THERE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM OVER McAffe and others.

The odds are a little our way.by - August 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I became infected by a virus last week, NAV quickly detected the problem and removed all traces of the virus. I'm happy and it's not passed onto anyone else. You must be happy too. I do have problems with it running in the background.

Still no single-user product for Windows serversby - August 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The most frustrating thing for me is that Symantec *still* does not offer an antivirus program that you can buy for a single Windows server machine (e.g., Win2K server). When asked about this, they say that they can sell you five licenses for the Corporate Edition, and that there is no way to just sell one, even if you have no need for the other four. When pressed further, they question the wisdom of running the Windows server versions, saying that they are "inappropriate." Honestly, my definition of inappropriate is trying to make your customers pay five times as much as they should for a single license; maybe it's just me.

Always having to Upgrade S U C K S!!by - August 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Was a Norton fan since Win 3.0. Always upgraded software with OS Upgrade, if needed--Until XP. Norton would not give a six month refund on a NAV sub when NAV 2000 would not work on XP.Booo!!!

poor tech supportby - August 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: It is unfortunate that the tech support is so poor. Not only is it expensive I thin the one person they have doing tech support must only work part-time, or at least it seems that way. Our office runs several copies (all paid for, un fortunately) and if we ever have a problem we are pretty much on our own to fix it. I have sat over 2 hours on the phone on hold, and still no help. I will not upgrade to any newer versions (we have 2002), and will switch to another product as soon as our subscriptions run out.

Great product supportby - August 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Symantec has an excellent support site that provides free support. I've used both their knowledge bases and their online discussion forums on many occassions, and have always received a prompt, courteous reply. The product itself is also a slight improvement over previous versions. Hard to improve on something that was already great to begin with.

good, but...by - August 22, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: nav is always good when it comes to anti-virus scanning... there's a reason it always stays at #1. however, why did they include im scanning? all of the major im programs already offer to pass files to nav when you download them anyway. i agree, the cost of upgrading isn't justified.
