Pros Supposedly a complete solution Antivirus Firewall and Anti-spyware
Cons Obtrusive, bloated, ineffective against spyware, poor technical support
Summary I have been using Norton AntiVirus for about 5 years and had it installed on 4 home computers until recently. Suddenly about a month ago I started getting an error saying that there was an internal program error "3038,107" and I couldn't do a full system scan. I tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling and couldn't resolve the issue myself so I contacted Symantec technical support. First using on-line chat support, then e-mail support and finally a paid support technician ($70 per incident) I was never able to fix the problem. Giving up, I even found it difficult to completely remove Norton from my system because it so firmly buries itself in the Windows Registry. In order to be totally away from NAV 2007 I decided to back up all my user files, wipe my hard drive and do a clean install of Windows.
I have noticed that whereas the firewall for this product is decent, it is not overly sophisicated and difficult to configure. The Anti-virus shield is very nice, as it as always been, but the Anti-spyware component of NAV 2007 it completely ineffectual. Over the past year I had 5 infections of spyware on my computer that NAV never found. I was willing to live with this vulnerability thinking that at least NAV anti-virus and the firewall would help somewhat. Then with the last incident I realize that this product is not as good as it could (or should) be.
Pros there are none
Cons Slow, Took hours to install because it kept becoming corrupt after installation, ended up using online download rather than purchased CD. If you allready have a virus, it will NOT install.
Summary My client asked me to reinstall it for him. There were over 200 infected files of which Norton failed to discover. Not only that, but it wouldn't reinstall with the infected files on the machine, talk about leaving you hanging. I spent about 5 hours manually removing the infected files through command prompt. One program I did use, and have always used to clean my client's computers, TrendMicro's PC-Cillin. IT installed with the viruses on the machine, discovered them, and was able to clean all except the ones inside the System32 folder (which I removed myself). I will never recommend Norton to anyone.
"Very Poor Software"on by Hootza
Pros Nothing Good to say
Cons This software kill two of my computers
Summary Please don't buy this one. If you do you maybe in for a major headache, lost data, and spending hours reinstalling windows
I have been a Norton user for over 10 years. It was pretty good for back then. There stuff has been getting worse and worse over the years. This latest one is very bad. For one thing it loads itself several times into memory and pretty much slows the computer down so much that a high end computer because about as good as 386. When you try to unistall it things go from bad to worse. I have 3 computers and on two of them I needed to reformat the hard drive and reinstall all my software. One the 3 rd one all I needed to do was fix the MBR. I have waisted many hours on their crap software. I have never used such poor software.
I could go on and on about how bad Norton is.
Pros Good virus &trojan protection, spyware & adware protection is improving! Works with spysweeper, zone, pest patrol, ton of other programs. Firewall is also silent but powerful doesn't annoy you.
Cons Little slower than your average free antivirus program but that is because it is protecting you.
Summary I would recommend Norton Anti-virus over McAfee simply because McAfee is slow and every different part of McAfee is run separately like spyware, virus, etc, it all starts up separately. Norton is just fine for decent virus, trojan, rootkit, and spyware/adware protection. I suggest you layer with spyware protection.

Pros None whatsoever
Cons Bogs system down
Summary NAV07 provides the single 100% effective solution against viruses--abstinence. This product bogged my system down to maybe 15% of its previous speed, and made it so frustrating to try to work on it that I switched to another system using an older rev of NAV. So the PC with NAV07 is entirely safe, since I won't spend 5-10 minutes getting online and waiting for a page to come up or opening an application. The ultimate solution! Where does the line for for the class action suit?
