Installation Nightmare - Try V-Com's Systemsuite Instead

Pros: I really can't think of any.

Cons: Difficult or Impossible to Install

Review: I'm still trying to install this software. There are about 7 technotes on the Symantec website dealing with installation problems for this software, as well as Personal Firewall. You better read them all before you even try, I say try, to install this stuff. Count on problems if you have a prior version that you are going to remove and upgrade. I've been working on installing this for about 4 hours, and on one occasion I crashed the computer trying to implement one of Symantec's fixes -- spent 2 days trying to revive it, gave up and restored the hard drive with a backup image. Over the years, this software has become more bloated and problematic. Symantec has been complacent about product quality. Check out the reviews on Amazon as well. Better bet is SystemSuite Pro 6 by V-com. I've been running version 5 for a year on another computer and it works very well, not a resource hog, only a few minor problems that V_com helped me fix. I installed Version 6 on my brother's computer with no problem at all.

Not worth the money

Pros: Eliminates some windows errors

Cons: Worm protection disables files sharing

Review: I updated from the 2002 version and barely see any improvements. In addition, I spent hours trying to discover why the computer with Norton installed couldn't be seen by the other computers on my network, only to discover it was the worm protection on Norton's anti-virus that was the problem. Following the advice on Symantec's support site DID NOT solve the problem so there is some kind of a bug in the software, and due to their terrible support, there is no way to get any help on this. Unless you get this program for free, don't update. I'll go back to my AVAST product as soon as my year is up.

Norton has never failed me

Pros: Easy to install, detects worms automatically and deletes them

Cons: It recommends you turn off window's firewall and use it instead

Review: Assuming you don't have any P2P software (like Morpheus) installed in your computer, Norton systemworks effectively protects your computer and helps improve your computer's efficiency with tools like windoctor, diskdoctor and of course norton antivirus.

I'd never connect any pc which I happen to own to the internet without it. I just wouldn't feel safe.

It's a bit pricey, but your peace of mind is worth it.
Updated
Uninstalling any version of Norton is actually fast and easy, just go to Control Panel, then Add and remove programs, then select norton and liveupdate then click remove.

After restarting the computer, norton has been successfully uninstalled.

You'll never have a problem assuming you are using a licensed, legitimate copy of Norton.

Don't bother

Pros: None that I know of

Cons: Screwed up my sound

Review: After upgrading(!) from NSW 2003 Pro, my system event sounds didn't work. The sound files themselves were fine -- they played when I tested them in the Control Panel -- but they didn't play when the system events occurred (such as starting Windows, opening menus, etc.). I finally got my problem fixed with Microsoft's tech support help (I was convinced it was a registry problem, and Symantec's tech support was no help whatsoever). I have since uninstalled NSW 2005 (as thoroughly as possible, anyway) and reinstalled NSW 2003, which worked perfectly well.

Am in process of getting money back

Pros: Installed okay (not sure why you have select other components separately though)

Cons: 1. Would not start correctly 2. Tech support in India could not help 3. Difficult to un-install

Review: I purchased my new PC with XP Home SP2 and the first thing I did after installing the chipset and graphic card drivers was to install my newly purchased NSW 2005.

The installation was fine but the product would not start up correctly after a re-boot. I had a few 'digital signature' errors and my virus definitions would not update pas 8/11/2004. I called tech support three times and un-installed and re-installed the product four times - I even re-installed XP after re-formatting the drive ... still no luck.

I am now in the process of trying to get my money back and will look for other anti-virus software, anybody got any suggestions?

I switched to Avast

Pros: Norton seems to protect ok, liveupdate is good, autoscheduled scans good

Cons: Costs a lot compared to free, VERY ANNOYING popup you can't get rid of when the subscription runs out. Also very hard to delete from system if you want to.

Review: I have used Norton for over 3 years. It is getting pricy, and after research, I decided to uninstall it since my subscription expired, and install Avast. Uninstalling took over an hour. You have to msconfig to uncheck anything norton in startup, reboot, use Remove Programs, reboot, use it again for all the different pieces. Then I had to regedit to get rid of the Symantic keys still left. Installed Avast and on first book it found 7 trojans, two in windows files. I am encouraged that I made the right decisions, especially since Avast is FREE for home users.

Caused problems not there before. Horrible support.

Pros: My installation was normal....surprisingly.

Cons: 1. New licensing policy. 2. Bugs in the software. 3. Horrible support.

Review: I have been an advocate of Norton in the past, but no more. I recently upgraded my laptop that uses Windows XP with very poor results.
1. Was disappointed to see policy change reguarding license agreement for only one computer.
2. After installing (apparently normal installation) and then running system check and fix, I had problems every time I booted computer. During startup the "my documents" folder opens and remains open on the desktop. After I close it the startup cycle continues normally. This still happens every time I boot the computer.
3. Symantec support was very little help. First call (to India) agent asked me to repeat my name six times. Went down hill after that with no help at all. I then used email to convey my problem. I did receive technical help trying to manually check and delete possible corrupt files in my registry. All to no avail. Still have the problem. This after five email correspondences that took about a month in all.
4. System appears to actually run slower now than before installation.

After reading these reviews I am getting ready to return another NSW I got for my desktop computer.

Buy McAfee instead!

Pros: Absolutely none!

Cons: Worthless support, impossible installation, full of problems

Review: Since about 2000 I always purchased the newest copy of Norton Systemworks professional because it was a great product, easy to use and kept the PC running smoothly. However, with the last version, I had nothing but installation problems and NO support.
ON a brand-new Dell (out of the box) I tried to install the NSW product. After installation and reboot, I was given the consistent error that Norton Autoprotect was disabled. When I tried to enable it, I received a coded error. I promptly went to Norton's support site and found the code. I followed every step one by one to "solve" the incident. Nothing helped.
I then broadened my search to the web and found little other information. AFter plunking down close to $100 for the professional package, I wasn't about to pay an additional $29.00 for phone support. I attempted to email tech support and never received a response.
Needless to say, Symantec has really dropped the ball with this product. I wrote a complaint on Planet Feedback with no response from Symantec.
I have since purchased McAfee Antivirus and other utilities. Norton is on my eternal fecal roster - I used to recommend their products to everyone in my "circle of influence", but never again. This product stinks!

100% Horrid and Disgusting from what used to be a good product

Pros: Absolutely NOTHING

Cons: Miserable install, uninstall defective, live-update defective, non ms-windows compliant usages

Review: Every install since Norton 2000 versions have PROGRESSIVLY gotten worse in terms of reliability and additions of restrictive, non-windows complaint "features". Tech support personnel can hardly speak English; are typically arrogant along with being simply rude and stupid.

2005 versions take the cake. First of all IF one moves the default shortcuts folder "Norton SystemWorks" (should be titled "Norton SystemDoesntwork") from start menu-->programs to another folder - a NORMAL and STANDARD FEATURE that ms-WINDOWS allows from every version of Windows EVER made then
version 2005 live update will fail. Moreover the anti-virus programs will fail on system start with nasty messages about needing to uninstall and reinstall.

Second, for upgraders especially from the almost equally horrid 2004 versions, The 2004 uninstall FAILS to properly and fully uninstall the product (I deliberately let my subscription run out to get full usage of it since Norton renewals take place on day of renewal thereby effectively screwing a purchaser out of remaining time for exisiting renewal period). That failure to fully uninstall leaves registry settings that indicate to live update that subscription services are expired. Upon attempting to update 2005, you get messages regarding expired subscription, yet when you verify with Norton "Doesntworks" web site, your license is current.... Until you manually remove the leftover crap the 2004 uninstall failed to, this situation will not resolve.

Anybody using 2005 and willing to live with the ridiculous and non-compliant to ms-windows normal usage by not allowing any user to organize the folders in start-menu.programs is a fool for not pursuing alternative products from zone alarm, trend lines (pc-cillin), mcaffee, computer associates. The idiots at Symantec do not see this restriction as a problem and challenged me to prove to them this was not a non-compliant to ms-windows usage standard. The best result and message to send Norton is simply stop using your product and hopefully enjoy news of unemployment lines of former Norton developers and management if you already have a version and instead competitive upgrade to a ms-windows compliant product alternate.

Not to mention that other evaluations of Zone Alarm and pc-cillon have superior ratings as well. McAfee is not as bad as Norton, but their software is an unprofessional install in that a user cannot specify the destination location but they too like Norton make manual update a major pain. And I for one, do not want nor allow any software to blindly update in the background. Instead I want to manually downloaded updates, preferably an exe that can be run after the download completes. Norton in version 2005, attempts to turn on the auto-update EVERY darn time you run live-update - ANOTHER MAJOR NUISANCE -- from idiot programmers who a trying to foist their version of how you should run YOUR computer on you. McAffee requires you to manually download three or more files, manually stop the product, move files, and restart. The OLD Norton was great, download an update exe and run it - simple, effective, convenient --- and effectively GONE from version 2005.
